Dennis James Sobchuk (born January 12, 1954) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey centre who played 35 games in the National Hockey League (NHL).

Early life

Sobchuk was born in Lang, Saskatchewan. His older brother is Gene Sobchuk, also a professional hockey player. The two played together on the Cincinnati Stingers while their father, Harry Sobchuk, was the scout for the team.

Career

During his career, Sobchuk was a member of the Detroit Red Wings and Quebec Nordiques. He also played five seasons in the World Hockey Association (WHA) with the Phoenix Roadrunners, Cincinnati Stingers and Edmonton Oilers.

His jersey number 14 is one of six numbers retired by the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League (WHL).

The 1973–74 WCHL season was the eighth season of the Western Canada Hockey League (WCHL). It featured twelve teams and a 68-game regular season. The Regina Pats topped the season's standings with 43 wins, and in the playoffs went on to win the team's first President's Cup, defeating the Calgary Centennials in the championship series. The win earned the Pats a berth in the 1974 Memorial Cup tournament, and Regina would go on to win its first Memorial Cup since 1930. This was the first Memorial Cup title for a team representing the WCHL.

The 1974 Memorial Cup occurred May 5–12 at the Stampede Corral in Calgary, Alberta. It was the 56th annual Memorial Cup competition, organized by the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) to determine the champion of major junior A ice hockey. Participating teams were the winners of the Ontario Hockey Association, Quebec Major Junior Hockey League and Western Hockey League which were the St. Catharines Black Hawks, Quebec Remparts and Regina Pats. Regina won their 4th Memorial Cup, defeating Quebec in the final game.

Throughout his career, which lasted from 1971 to 1978, Sobchuk also played in various minor leagues as well. Sobchuk is the brother of Dennis Sobchuk.
