Department of Public Libraries is a government department under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs of the Government of Bangladesh. It is responsible for government owned public libraries in Bangladesh and is located in Dhaka, Bangladesh. [1] [2] [3] [4]
Department of Public Libraries traces its origins to the Public Library in the Dhaka University campus which was established on 22 March 1958 by the government of Pakistan. The Public Library was shifted to its present building in 1977 and opened in 1978. The Government of Bangladesh established a network of public libraries down to every district and the department of Public Libraries was established in 1983 to manage them. [5] In 2010 the department exchanged material on Bangladesh Liberation war with the National Library of India. [6]
The Department of Public Libraries are responsible for 64 government public libraries, with one in every district of Bangladesh. The National Public Library, called the Sufia Kamal National Public Library is based in Dhaka's Shahbag and is the largest public library in Bangladesh. It houses the central administration of the Department of Public Libraries. There are also Divisional Public Libraries in Sylhet, Chittagong, Khulna and Rangpur. All other districts contain a Govt. District Public Library, usually located in the district capital.
In August 2016 a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and the British Council Bangladesh formalising a partnership in which the British Council would work with the Department of Public Libraries to modernise the public library sector in Bangladesh. [7] [8] The project, called Libraries Unlimited, is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and managed by the British Council Bangladesh with a stated aim of "Opening access to information and knowledge for all in Bangladesh". [9] The project is on-going and is scheduled to run until the end of 2020. [9]
The Bangladesh National Museum, is the national museum of Bangladesh. The museum is well organized and displays have been housed chronologically in several departments like department of ethnography and decorative art, department of history and classical art, department of natural history, and department of contemporary and world civilization. The museum also has a rich conservation laboratory. Nalini Kanta Bhattasali served as the first curator of the museum during 1914–1947.
Munier Choudhury was a Bangladeshi educationist, playwright, literary critic and political dissident. He was a victim of the mass killing of Bengali intellectuals in 1971. He was awarded Independence Day Award in 1980, by the then President Ziaur Rahman's government, posthumously.

The Sufia Kamal National Public Library of Bangladesh is the largest public library in Bangladesh and houses the central administration of the Department of Public Libraries, under the Ministry of Cultural Affairs. The library was previously named as "Central Public Library" between 2004 and 2010. The library is located in Dhaka's Shahbag neighbourhood.
The National Library of Bangladesh (NLB) is the legal depository of all new books and other printed materials published in Bangladesh under the copyright law of Bangladesh. It was founded in 1973, but it traces its origins back to 1967, before the Bangladesh Liberation War and its independence. It is open to general public and has both Bengali and English language books. It is housed in the National Library Bhaban.
