Derek James Klazen (born 31 May 1965 in Walvis Bay) is a Namibian politician and businessman. A member of SWAPO,he is Namibia's Minister of Fisheries since 21 April 2021. [1]
Klazen was born on 31 May 1965 in Walvis Bay,then an exclave of South Africa. He attended De Duine Secondary School until 1984 and then the Khomas Teachers College from 1985 to 1987,graduating with a diploma in education. In 1994 he obtained a higher diploma in education from Windhoek College of Education. [2]
Klazen is a SWAPO member and was a council member of Walvis Bay between 2004 and 2014,serving as mayor between 2006 and 2008,as well as in 2010. In the 2014 parliamentary election he was elected to parliament and immediately appointed deputy minister of Urban and Rural Development. [2] He served until April 2021 when he was promoted to minister and given the portfolio of fisheries and marine resources. [1]
Klazen was until 2021 board member and shareholder of KKNU Holdings,a fishing company in Walvis Bay. He resigned his board membership and sold his 25% when he became minister of fisheries. [3]
Walvis Bay is a city in Namibia and the name of the bay on which it lies. It is the second largest city in Namibia and the largest coastal city in the country. The city covers an area of 29 square kilometres (11 sq mi) of land. The bay is a safe haven for sea vessels because of its natural deep-water harbour,protected by the Pelican Point sand spit,being the only natural harbour of any size along the country's coast. Being rich in plankton and marine life,these waters also draw large numbers of southern right whales,attracting whalers and fishing vessels.
Theo-Ben Gurirab was a Namibian politician who served in various senior government positions. He served as the second prime minister of Namibia from 28 August 2002 to 20 March 2005,following the demotion and subsequent resignation of Hage Geingob. Previously he was the country's first Minister of Foreign Affairs from 1990 to 2002 and was President of the United Nations General Assembly from 1999 to 2000. He was Speaker of the National Assembly of Namibia from 2005 to 2015,when he was replaced by Peter Katjavivi. Gurirab ultimately resigned from politics in 2015.
Nahas Gideon Angula is a Namibian politician who served as the third Prime Minister of Namibia from 21 March 2005 to 4 December 2012. He was succeeded by Hage Geingob in a cabinet reshuffle after the 2012 SWAPO Party congress. He subsequently served as Minister of Defence from 2012 to 2015.
Hage Gottfried Geingob was a Namibian politician who served as the third president of Namibia from 2015 until his death in February 2024. Geingob was the first prime minister of Namibia from 1990 to 2002,and served again from 2012 to 2015. Between 2008 and 2012 Geingob served as Minister of Trade and Industry. In November 2014,Geingob was elected president of Namibia by an overwhelming margin. In November 2017,Geingob became the third president of the ruling SWAPO Party after winning by a large margin at the party's sixth Congress. He served as the party's president until his death. In August 2018,Geingob began a one-year term as chairperson of the Southern African Development Community.
Ben Amathila is a retired Namibian politician. Amathila served in the government of Namibia with SWAPO from independence in 1990 until his retirement in April 2007.
Nangolo Mbumba is a Namibian politician who is the fourth president of Namibia. He became president after the death of Hage Geingob,under whom he had served as the second vice-president of Namibia from 2018 to 2024.

Bernhardt Martin Esau is a Namibian politician. A member of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO),Esau has been a member of the National Assembly since being nominated by President Sam Nujoma and subsequently elected in the 1994 Namibian general election.
Abraham Iyambo was a Namibian politician. Iyambo was a member of the National Assembly of Namibia since 1995,serving as Minister of Fisheries from 1997 to 2010 and Minister of Education from 2010 until his death. Iyambo was a member of both the central committee and political bureau of the SWAPO Party and the chairperson of its think tank.

Walvis Bay Urban covers 18.9 km2 (7.3 sq mi) of land. With all arid surroundings belonging to the Walvis Bay Rural constituency it is by far the smallest and most densely populated constituency in Erongo Region. As of 2020 the constituency had 25,311 registered voters.

A member of SWAPO,Witbooi was elected to the Namibia's National Assembly in the 2009 general election. Prior to entering the National Assembly,Witbooi was a teacher in Gibeon,Hardap Region. She studied at Suiderlig High School in Keetmanshoop and worked in the administration of the Namaland bantustan.
Sakeus Edward Twelityaamena "Sacky" Shanghala is a Namibian lawyer and politician who served as the Minister of Justice from 8 February 2018 until November 2019 when he was forced to resign in the wake of the Fishrot scandal. He previously also served as Attorney General of Namibia from 2015 to 2018. Shanghala is a former chairperson of the Law Reform and Development Commission which he chaired between 2010 and 2015.
Peter Hafeni Vilho is a Namibian politician and retired rear admiral who is a member of the Parliament of Namibia,a former Minister of Defence,and a former commander of the Namibian Navy. He was appointed the commander of the maritime wing of the Namibian Defence Force in 2002. In September 2017 he was appointed as executive director of the Ministry of Defence. In March 2020,Namibian president Hage Geingob appointed Vilho as the Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs. Vilho served until his resignation in April 2021 after allegations of holding an undeclared bank account.

The current fisheries minister is Derek Klazen,former mayor of Walvis Bay.
Natalia ǀGoagoses is a Namibian politician who has been a member of the National Assembly for SWAPO since 2020. Since 2023,she has served as Deputy Minister of Higher Education,Training and Innovation. She was also the deputy minister in the Ministry of Urban and Rural Development from April 2021 to September 2023.
