Albert Kawana (born 26 March 1956) is a Namibian politician. A member of SWAPO,Kawana has been a member of the National Assembly and cabinet since 2000,serving in various positions. Since April 2021 he has been minister of Home Affairs,Immigration,Safety and Security. A lawyer by training,Kawana led Namibia's legal team in the Kasikili Island dispute,which was argued before the International Court of Justice.
Kawana was born on 26 March 1956 [1] at Katima Mulilo in the Zambezi Region. He entered Namibian politics while in exile in Zambia. In 1979 he graduated from the United Nations Institute for Namibia (UNIN) with a diploma in Development Studies and Management. He moved on to the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom,where he received his L.L.M. in 1983 and Ph.D. in 1988. Following graduation,Kawana moved back to Zambia,where he became a lecturer in the final years of UNIN from 1988 to 1990. [2]
Following Namibia's independence in March 1990,Kawana moved back to Namibia to become the first permanent secretary of the Minister of Justice,where he worked until 2000. Chosen by SWAPO to the third National Assembly in 2000,he immediately was promoted to the position of deputy Minister of Justice. Following the 2004 general election,Kawana was promoted to head the justice ministry,becoming the first permanent secretary to advance to the top post of minister since independence. [2]
Kawana led Namibia's legal team in the Kasikili Island dispute,which was argued before the International Court of Justice. The court eventually sided with Botswana. [2] [3]
In 2005 he became minister for presidential affairs,serving until 2015. [2] Kawana was also included in President Hage Geingob's cabinet,appointed in March 2015,as minister of justice. [4] During a cabinet reshuffle in February 2018,he swapped positions with Sacky Shanghala and became attorney general,also in the rank of a minister. [5] Kawana became minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources after incumbent Bernhardt Esau resigned in November 2019 in the wake of the Fishrot scandal. [6] In a cabinet reshuffle in April 2021,he was moved to the Home Affairs,Immigration,Safety and Security ministry. [7]
Albert Kawana was awarded The Most Brilliant Order of the Sun second-class for his distinguished service above the call of duty,in August 2024 by President Nangolo Mbumba. [8]
Politics of Namibia takes place in a framework of a semi-presidential representative democratic republic,whereby the President of Namibia is both head of state and head of government,and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by both the president and the government. Legislative power is vested in the two chambers of Parliament. The judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.
Hage Gottfried Geingob was a Namibian politician who served as the third president of Namibia and Commander-in-Chief of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF) from 2015 until his death in February 2024. Geingob was the first Prime Minister of Namibia from 1990 to 2002,and served as prime minister again from 2012 to 2015. Between 2008 and 2012 Geingob served as Minister of Trade and Industry. In November 2014,Geingob was elected president of Namibia by an overwhelming margin. In November 2017,Geingob became the third president of the ruling SWAPO Party after winning by a large margin at the party's sixth Congress. He served as the party's president until his death. In August 2018,Geingob began a one-year term as chairperson of the Southern African Development Community.
Jerry Lukiiko Ekandjo is a Namibian politician,former anti-apartheid activist and political prisoner. He is one of the founding members of the SWAPO Youth League and has been one of the most active internal leading members of the South West Africa People's Organization (SWAPO) during the liberation struggle. He spent eight years in prison on Robben Island after being charged for inciting violence in 1973.
Ngarikutuke Ernest Tjiriange was a Namibian politician,a member of the National Assembly and former secretary-general of the ruling SWAPO Party. He also served in the Namibian cabinet from 1990 to 2010,first as Minister of Justice,then without portfolio,and then as Minister of Veteran Affairs.

Nangolo Mbumba is a Namibian politician who is the fourth and current president of Namibia. He became president after the death of Hage Geingob,under whom he had served as the second Vice-president of Namibia from 2018 to 2024.
The United Nations Institute for Namibia (UNIN) was an educational body set up by the United Nations Council for Namibia from 1976 to 1990. Based in Zambia's capital of Lusaka,UNIN was the brainchild of United Nations Commissioner for Namibia Seán MacBride,the proposal creating UNIN was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly in December 1974. Sakeus Edward Twelityaamena "Sacky" Shanghala is a Namibian lawyer and politician who served as the Minister of Justice from 8 February 2018 until November 2019 when he was forced to resign in the wake of the Fishrot scandal. He previously also served as Attorney General of Namibia from 2015 to 2018. Shanghala is a former chairperson of the Law Reform and Development Commission which he chaired between 2010 and 2015.

The Fishrot Six,former Namibian fisheries minister Bernhardt Esau,justice minister Sacky Shanghala,James Hatuikulipi,Tamson Hatuikulipi,Ricardo Gustavo and Pius Mwatelulo,are a group of Namibian officials who are alleged to have masterminded a major corrupt political scandal. They are currently in jail,awaiting trial. The allegations are that the Six corruptly acquired $15 million in bribes from the Icelandic fishing company Samherji. Subsequently the revelations were dubbed the Fishrot scandal,and the accused officials the Fishrot Six. The investigations leading to their arrest were conducted by The Namibian,Aljazeera and the Icelandic State Television.
