John Desmond Beauchamp Doran (6 April 1913 – 9 September 1946) was a British Army Intelligence Officer who started his career in intelligence in the Secret Intelligence Service. He spent most of his active service career in the Middle East during the Second World War and the troubles that followed in the British Mandatory Palestine. Doran's family were a long established military family with roots in County Wexford, Ireland. His father Walter Robert Butler Doran was a highly decorated British Army Officer, as were his uncles and grandfather.
He is recorded as being an officer in the Secret Intelligence Service before transferring to the army. [1]
He was commissioned in the Intelligence Corps as a Lieutenant on 12 February 1943; his service number was 274197. [2] He is recorded as having been on the staff of Security Intelligence Middle East (SIME) [3] based in Cairo. [4] His preferred titling was Desmond Doran whilst on government service. [5]
At the end of the war Doran was transferred from Cairo to British Mandatory Palestine and became the Area Security Officer for Jaffa/Tel Aviv. His living quarters and office were located above another government office located at the municipal boundary between Jewish Tel Aviv and the Arab port of Jaffa.
He died of wounds received in a terrorist attack on his quarters on 9 September 1946. He was buried at the Ramleh War Cemetery now located in Israel. [6] [7] Major Doran had been specifically targeted by the Lehi because he was a threat to the organistation. [8] [9] Doran's Romanian-born wife Sanda and other military personnel Arab and British were involved in the attack. [10] Major Doran's obituary notice indicates that Sanda Doran did survive the injuries received in the attack. [11] [12] [13]
The Irgun, or Etzel, was a Zionist paramilitary organization that operated in Mandatory Palestine between 1931 and 1948. It was an offshoot of the older and larger Jewish paramilitary organization Haganah. The Irgun has been viewed as a terrorist organization or organization which carried out terrorist acts.
The Jewish Infantry Brigade Group, more commonly known as the Jewish Brigade Group or Jewish Brigade, was a military formation of the British Army in the Second World War. It was formed in late 1944 and was recruited among Yishuv Jews from Mandatory Palestine and commanded by Anglo-Jewish officers. Sarona is a neighborhood of Tel Aviv, Israel which started as a German Templer Colony in Palestine in 1871. It was one of the earliest modern villages established by Europeans in Ottoman Palestine. In July 1941, the British Mandate authorities deported 188 residents of Sarona, who were considered ardent Nazi sympathizers. Al-Shaykh Muwannis, also Sheikh Munis, was a small Palestinian Arab village in the Jaffa Subdistrict of Mandatory Palestine, located approximately 8.5 kilometers from the center of Jaffa city in territory earmarked for Jewish statehood under the UN Partition Plan. A successful paramilitary campaign, sometimes referred to as the Palestine Emergency, was carried out by Zionist underground groups against British rule in Mandatory Palestine from 1944 to 1948. The tensions between the Zionist underground and the British mandatory authorities rose from 1938 and intensified with the publication of the White Paper of 1939. The Paper outlined new government policies to place further restrictions on Jewish immigration and land purchases, and declared the intention of giving independence to Palestine, with an Arab majority, within ten years. Though World War II brought relative calm, tensions again escalated into an armed struggle towards the end of the war, when it became clear that the Axis powers were close to defeat.

Operation Hametz was a Zionist operation towards the end of Mandatory Palestine, as part of the 1948 Palestine war. It was launched at the end of April 1948 with the objective of capturing villages inland from Jaffa and establishing a blockade around the town. The operation, which led to the first direct battle between the British and the Irgun, was seen as a great victory for the latter, and enabled the Irgun to take credit for the complete conquest of Jaffa that happened on May 13.

Security Intelligence Middle East (SIME) (1912-1946) was an organisation made up of a number of British intelligence agencies supporting the British Military Government during the Second World War, based in Cairo, Egypt. It was composed of Security Service (MI5), with Secret Intelligence Service (MI6) provided by liaison officers and army Intelligence Corps personnel, but MI5 were the lead agency and provided the focus.
