Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya (born 16 June 1965) is an Indian judge. Presently,he is Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. He is former Chief Justice of Bombay High Court and Judge of Allahabad High Court. [1] [2]
Justice Upadhyaya graduated in law from Lucknow University in the year 1991 and enrolled as an Advocate on 11 May 1991. He practiced in Civil and Constitutional sides at Allahabad High Court. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of Allahabad High Court on 21 November 2011 and made permanent on 6 August 2013. He was appointed as Chief Justice of Bombay High Court on 29 July 2023. He was transferred as Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on 21 January 2025.
The Supreme Court of India is the supreme judicial authority and the highest court of the Republic of India. It is the final court of appeal for all civil and criminal cases in India. It also has the power of judicial review. The Supreme Court,which consists of the chief justice of India and a maximum of fellow 33 judges,has extensive powers in the form of original,appellate and advisory jurisdictions.
The High Court of Delhi is the high court in Delhi,India. It was established on 31 October 1966,through the Delhi High Court Act,1966. Below it are 11 Subordinate Courts that oversee smaller judicial districts. The court gets its powers from Chapter V in Part VI of the Constitution of India.
The high courts of India are the highest courts of appellate jurisdiction in each state and union territory of India. However,a high court exercises its original civil and criminal jurisdiction only if the subordinate courts are not authorized by law to try such matters for lack of peculiar or territorial jurisdiction. High courts may also enjoy original jurisdiction in certain matters,if so designated,especially by the constitution,a state law or union law.
The Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) heads the Election Commission of India,a body constitutionally empowered to conduct free and fair elections. An election commissioner is appointed by the President of India on the recommendation of a three member selection committee headed by the Prime Minister of India and senior most election commissioner is appointed as chief election commissioner.
