Devendra Pandey was an Indian politician affiliated with the Indian National Congress,who served as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) twice from Jaisinghpur Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 1985 and 1985 to 1989. He also served as the Uttar Pradesh State General Secretary of the Indian National Congress. [1] He died on 23 September 2017 at the age of 67. [1]
Pandey came into the limelight in 1978,when he hijacked Indian Airlines Flight 410,en-route on a domestic flight from Calcutta to Delhi with the help of a toy gun in protest against the arrest of Indira Gandhi. [2] In the plane hijack case,he was imprisoned in Lucknow jail for nine months and 28 days. Later,when the Congress government came to power,on the instructions of the then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,the government withdrew the case against him in 1980. Devendra Pandey was close to Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. [3] [4]
After the death of Indira Gandhi,Rajiv Gandhi also gave the assembly ticket to Devendra Pandey in 1985 and 1989. In 1985,Devendra again won the assembly,but in 1989 he lost the election. [1]

Rajiv Gandhi was an Indian politician who served as the 6th Prime Minister of India from 1984 to 1989. He took office after the assassination of his mother,then–prime minister Indira Gandhi,to become at the age of 40 the youngest Indian prime minister. He served until his defeat at the 1989 election,and then became Leader of the Opposition,Lok Sabha,resigning in December 1990,six months before his own assassination.

Indian Airlines Flight 410 was a domestic passenger flight from Calcutta to Palam Airport,Delhi,India. On 20 December 1978 the flight was hijacked by Bholanath Pandey and Devendra Pandey shortly before landing at Palam Airport. The hijackers claimed to be members of the Indian Youth Congress,and demanded the release of Indira Gandhi,withdrawal of the charges against her son Sanjay Gandhi,and the resignation of the Janata Party government. The hijackers surrendered shortly after 60 passengers managed to escape.

He is referred one of the closest to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi,Rajiv Gandhi and former UPA Chairperson Smt.Sonia Gandhi. Pandey,well known for his knowledge of Hindi and its promotion as an official language,was a graduate of Banaras Hindu University and played a key role in organising World Hindi Conferences abroad. Pandey was also known as a member of the "shouting brigade" in the Rajya Sabha. Dr Pandey died on 1 September 2018 after a prolonged illness.
