Deweighting, deweighing or weight reduction, is a chemical treatment that peels the surface of polyester fibers and makes them softer and finer. It also reduces the fiber weight and hence weakens the strength. Additionally, the treatment enhances the absorbency of the treated substrates. [1] Deweighting is an alkaline hydrolysis treatment that affects the surface fibers of the polyester and reduces the decitex or denier of fibers, weight loss of between 10% and 30% is possible during the treatment. [2] Polyester and cotton blends can be treated with an alkali process to make them look and feel like silk. [3]
When Sodium hydroxide (5~10 grams per litre) is applied to polyester in hot conditions, the chemical reaction peels off the surface of the polyester fibers and changes the surface of the finished product, making it softer and finer in texture. During treatment, it is necessary to consider the loss of strength and the degree of softness. Treatment may be carried out by the exhaust method in a dyeing vessel such as an overflow, HT, or winch dyeing machine. The addition of a cationic accelerator and the use of a HT (high temperature) vessel can accelerate the alkalization process. Finally, an anionic surfactant is applied to prevent further deweighting and to aid in the dispersion of the peeled fibers. [1]
Alkali deweighing treatment of polyester fiber is a complicated process that includes treatment with caustic at a hot temperature. The hydraulic action peels the surface, resulting in a weakening of the fiber and an increase in its softness and fineness. Hence, care should be taken while treating. The deweighting rate of the fabric can be changed by manipulating the temperature and time. [1]
Alkali deweighting of polyester fiber with imidazole ionic liquid is helpful in accelerating the deweighing action. The processing with imidazole ionic liquid can improve alkali deweighting efficiency and increase alkali agent usage rate while using less alkali agent. [4]
Deweighting and simultaneously dyeing with disperse dye is also possible, which avoids the two-step process of deweighting and then dyeing in another bath. [5]
Alkali deweighting of bicomponent containing polytrimethylene terephthalate/polyamide 6 separates the PTT and nylon components of the yarns, resulting in superfine filaments with a change in fiber diameter and shape. [6]

It is essential that conservators consider physical and chemical compatibility along with future treatability in choosing a stabilization technique.

Hand feel is an estimated and subjective property of different fabrics, but nowadays, hand feel could be measured and assessed statistically.
Chemical finishing of textiles refers to the process of applying and treating textiles with a variety of chemicals in order to achieve desired functional and aesthetic properties. Chemical finishing of textiles is a part of the textile finishing process where the emphasis is on chemical substances instead of mechanical finishing. Chemical finishing in textiles also known as wet finishing. Chemical finishing adds properties to the treated textiles. Softening of textiles, durable water repellancy and wrinkle free fabric finishes are examples of chemical finishing.
Scouring is a preparatory treatment of certain textile materials. Scouring removes soluble and insoluble impurities found in textiles as natural, added and adventitious impurities, for example, oils, waxes, fats, vegetable matter, as well as dirt. Removing these contaminants through scouring prepares the textiles for subsequent processes such as bleaching and dyeing. Though a general term, "scouring" is most often used for wool. In cotton, it is synonymously called "boiling out", and in silk, and "boiling off".

Blended textiles are fabrics or yarns produced with a combination of two or more types of different fibers, or yarns to obtain desired traits and aesthetics. Blending is possible at various stages of textile manufacturing. The term, blend, refers to spun fibers or a fabric composed of such fibers. There are several synonymous terms: a combination yarn is made up of two strands of different fibers twisted together to form a ply; a mixture or mixed cloth refers to blended cloths in which different types of yarns are used in warp and weft sides.
