Dezert (stylized as DEZERT) is a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in 2011. Their current line-up features Chiaki on vocals, Sacchan on bass, Miyako on guitar and Sora on drums and they have released 7 studio albums to date.

Real Sound indicated that Arlequin and Dezert have the potential to be "the double giants" of the new generation of visual kei, as it was with X Japan and Luna Sea in the first generation. [1]

Career

Early years (2011–2014)

Initially named And Emily and later Acid Cherry King, they were a session band formed in 2010 by vocalist Chiaki, bassist SaZ, drummer Tetsuro and guitarist Kira. The group changed their name to DEZERT in 2011 and released their debut single "Boku no Himitsu to Reizouko" the following year. Originally, Dezert's musicality was influenced by heavy and aggressive elements such as metalcore, nu-metal and hardcore punk. [2] [3] On March 3, 2012, former support drummer Sora officially joined the band.

In 2013, Dezert participated in one of hide's tribute albums, hide TRIBUTE III -Visual SPIRITS-, covering the track D.O.D. (DRINK OR DIE). [4]

Miyako's entrance and World Visual Festival (2015–2017)

On December 27, 2015, guitarist Kira left the band after a concert. [5] Miyako was a support guitarist and a few months later he officially joined the band. The album Saiko no Shokutaku would be released on December 16, but has been postponed to January 20, 2016. [6]

On November 23, 2016, they released their second compilation album Kanzen Ongen Shu - Zantei Teki Occult Shukanshi (2) with rare songs, played or distributed only at live shows. [7] Dezert participated in Cure magazine's World Visual Festival on April 30 together with other visual kei bands, including groups from outside Japan. [8]

In 2017, the band covered tracks for tribute albums to Mucc and D'erlanger. [9] [10] SaZ decided to change his stage name to Sacchan during the "1" tour. [11]

Maverick signature (2018–present)

"Now, I don't have the old-fashioned image of a rock band anymore. A rock band is something talented people like, and I expected alcohol, cigarettes, women and so on, but I'm completely different. [...] When I'm in a band, I can't move on unless I find something I don't like. I think it's an album that really makes me think about it."

Chiaki

At the fall of 2018, Dezert signed with MAVERICK (Danger Crue subdivision). After the label change, they changed their visual and musical style, moving from aggressive music and vocals to softer melodies. [3] They released Today on November 8, 2018, with two singles previously distributed in concerts: "おはよう (Ohayō))" (Good morning) and "おやすみ (Oyasumi))" (Good night). [12]

On November 27, 2019, black hole was released. The album presents the inferiority complex suffered by Chiaki, who writes all lyrics. He explained about the change in style, the album and his feelings in an interview: "Now, I don't have the old-fashioned image of a rock band anymore. A rock band is something talented people like, and I expected alcohol, cigarettes, women and so on, but I'm completely different. [...] When I'm in a band, I can't move on unless I find something I don't like. I think it's an album that really makes me think about it."

Dezert embarked on tour with Mucc in 2019, and the two bands released the collaborative single "Mushishi/Gachagachamukumuku (蟲／ガチャガチャムクムク) under the stage name DEZERMUCC. The single was limited to purchase during the tour performances. [13]

On November 16, 2020 Dezert released the single "Your Song". [14] In May 2021 they announced their eighth studio album, Rainbow, to be released on July 21. [15] On November 1, 2022, Dezert will take part in a two-man live held by Deadman at Shinjuku Blaze. [16]

Influences

Sora states that his biggest influences are X Japan as well as hide, and also participated in a cover band of Dir En Grey. Sacchan says he didn't have many influences, but his favorite band is Kaientai. [17]

Mucc is a Japanese visual kei rock band, formed in Ibaraki Prefecture in 1997. The classic line up of Tatsuro on vocals, Miya on guitar, Yukke on bass, and Satochi on drums was solidified in 1999 following the departure of original bassist Hiro. After 24 years, Satochi retired from the music industry in October 2021, leaving Mucc a trio. They have released 16 studio albums, with 2020's Aku being their highest-charting. Although predominately a heavy band both lyrically and musically, Mucc is known for switching between music genres and styles frequently. Kerrang! included their fourth studio album Kuchiki no Tō (2004) on a list of 13 essential Japanese rock and metal albums.

Blue Blood is the second studio album by Japanese rock band X Japan, then known as simply X. It was released on April 21, 1989, by CBS/Sony as the band's major label debut. Blue Blood sold more than 700,000 copies, reached number 6 on the Oricon chart and stayed on the chart for more than 100 weeks. The album's singles would also reach the top five on the chart. In 2007, Rolling Stone Japan ranked Blue Blood number 15 on their list of the "100 Greatest Japanese Rock Albums of All Time".

Hide Your Face is the debut album by Japanese musician hide, released on February 23, 1994. Jiluka is a Japanese visual kei metal band initially formed in May 2013 but restarted in February 2015. The group are an independent band on the label DPR Japan, consisting of members Ricko, Sena, the main songwriter of the songs, Boogie and Zyean. They have released 7 albums and 6 singles so far. It was ranked at the 12 position on the JRock News's top 15 visual kei and Japanese rock artists of 2019. Jiluka is described as "Modern metal visual kei".

Kiryū (己龍) is a Japanese visual kei metal band founded in 2007 with the concept of "Japanese terror" and "painful nostalgia". Formed by vocalist Mahiro Kurosaki, guitarists Takemasa Kujō and Mitsuki Sakai, bassist Hiyori Isshiki and drummer Junji Tokai, each member is represented by a color. They have been part of the independent label B.P Records since 2009.

Tatsuro is a Japanese singer and songwriter. He is best known as lead vocalist of the visual kei rock band Mucc since 1997. Tatsuro began a solo career in December 2021 and simultaneously released the albums = (Equal) and Hikagaku Hoteishiki the following year. Both reached the top 35 on the Oricon chart. His third album, Colors (2024), became his highest-charting solo release to date when it reached number 29.

Xaa-Xaa is a Japanese visual kei rock band formed in Osaka in 2014. They are signed with Timely Records. Their current lineup consists of Kazuki on vocals, Haru on guitar, Reiya on bass and An on drums.
