Dharamgarh is one of the sub-divisional headquarters in the district of Kalahandi in Odisha, India and it is one of the three Notified Area Councils in Kalahandi. [1] [2] It is also referred as Dharmagarh. Dharamgarh is known as the granary of Kalahandi district. [3] The Dharamgarh sub-division of Kalahandi includes Golamunda, Koksara, Jaipatna, Kalampur, Junagarh and Dharamgarh blocks. [4]

Dharamgarh became a sub-divisional headquarter in post-independence period when Kalahandi joined Odisha state. Dharamgarh sub-division is historically well known for rice production in the region. In post Upper Indravati irrigation project it among the leading rice producing sub-division in Odisha. Kalahandi contributed largest number of rice mill, out of which majority of the rice mills are in Dharamgarh sub-division. [5]

The history of Kalahandi goes back to the primitive period where a well-civilized, urbanized, and cultured people inhabited this land mass around 2000 years ago. The world's largest celt of Stone Age and the largest cemetery of the megalithic age have been discovered in Kalahandi. This shows the region had a civilized culture since the pre-historic era. Asurgarh near Narla in Kalahandi was one of the oldest metropolises in Odisha whereas the other one was Sisupalgarh near Bhubaneswar. Some other historical forts in the region includes Budhigarh, Amthagarh, Belkhandi and Dadpur-Jajjaldeypur. This land was unconquered by the great Ashoka, who fought the great Kalinga War, as per Ashokan record. In medieval period the region had played a prominent role to link South India, Eastern India and Central India region and witnessed the battle ground for Somavamsi, Chola, Kalachuris of Kalyani and Eastern Ganga dynasty. Kalahandi region was the main route for Chola to attack Subarnapur.

Behera(; is a hill town and Gram Panchayat of Dharamgarh Tehsil. It is 20 km from Dharamgarh and 14 km from Athara-Nala forest. Behera Dam is situated nearby which is 18 km from the village. This small hill town is surrounded by forests and is situated nearly to a very well known tourist place Dokrichanchra of Kalahandi. Behera is 65 km distance from its District Main City Bhawanipatna, and 560 km distance from its State Capital Bhubaneswar.

Golamunda is a town and a block in Golamunda Tehsil, Kalahandi, Odisha. Golamunda is 58 km from its district main city Bhawanipatna and 500 km from its state main city Bhubaneswar. Dharamgarh is the sub-divisional headquarters of Golamunda block.

Bhawanipatna is classified as one of the major tourist destinations by the tourism Department of Government of Odisha. All the tourist attraction in Kalahandi region comes under Bhawanipatna jurisdiction. Though tourist potential of Kalahandi has not been exploited optimally due to poor marketing, political negligence and infrastructure development, the land is very rich in terms of water fall, forest and wild life, natural and scenic beauty, tribal life, mountains, agriculture field, historical sites and handicrafts. The best time to visit Kalahandi region is from October to March. April–June is hard Summer and the mercury may rise to 45 degree C and June to August is the Monsoon Season. It occasionally rains in September, but do not miss the great festival like Nuakhai in September and Dassara in end of September or early October. Beginning of Dessara marks the pleasant weather condition till the celebration of Chaitra in February/March.

Kalampur is a town in the Dharamgarh sub-division of the Kalahandi district in India's Odisha State. The town is 35 kilometres (22 mi) from the district's main city Bhawanipatna, and 430 kilometres (270 mi) from the state capital Bhubaneswar.

Koksara is one of the Town in Dharamgarh sub-division in Kalahandi District in Odisha State. This town and Gram Panchayat comes under Kokasara Tehsil in Kalahandi District. Kokasara is 57 km distance from its District Main City Bhawanipatna and 484 km distance from its State Main City Bhubaneswar. TP Western Odisha Distribution Limited (TPWODL) is a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of Odisha with the majority stake being held by The Tata Power Company Limited (51%). The Discom TPWODL serves a population of 88 lacs with a customer base of more than 21 lacs. Kalahandi Utsav also called "Kalahandi Utsav Ghumara" is an annual exhibition or festival celebrated along with district administration in Bhawanipatna and Dharamgarh of Kalahandi District in the Indian state of Odisha. Kalahandi Utsav is a platform to encourage, motivate and showcase the art, culture, music, drama, literature, handy crafts of Odisha globally.

Sujeet Kumar is an Indian politician of the Biju Janata Dal party and a Member of Parliament (MP), representing Odisha in the Rajya Sabha(The Council of States or The Upper House), since 2020. He is also a Lawyer and trained Arbitrator, and practicing in the Supreme Court of India, various High Courts and Tribunals. He is currently the Chairman of the Committee on Petitions of Rajya Sabha, one of the youngest ever to chair a Parliamentary Committee.
