Diana Ramos is an American obstetrician and gynecologist who was appointed to serve as the Surgeon General of California by Governor Gavin Newsom.
Ramos earned both a Bachelor's Degree and Doctor of Medicine from the University of Southern California. She also earned a Master of Public Health from the University of California,Los Angeles and a Master of Business Administration from the University of California,Irvine. [1] Ramos completed her residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Los Angeles General Medical Center. [2]
Ramos serves as a health administrator at the California Department of Public Health's Center for Healthy Communities. [3] She is also an Adjunct Associate Clinical Professor at the Keck School of Medicine of USC,and is a member of the Keck School of Medicine Alumni Association Board. [2]
In 2019,she became president of the Orange County Medical Association. [4] Ramos is the secretary and member of the board of directors for the National Hispanic Medical Association. [5]
Ramos began her position as California's second Surgeon General in 2022. She outlined three primary priorities for progress,including reproductive health,mental health,and Adverse Childhood Experiences. [6] Ramos has said she aims to particularly target mental health challenges faced by transitional age youth. [2] She is also working to increase the number of medical students who are Latino,in order to address the growing need for physicians in the United States and California. [7]
Antonia Coello Novello is a Puerto Rican physician and public health administrator. She was a vice admiral in the Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and served as 14th Surgeon General of the United States from 1990 to 1993. Novello was the first woman and first Hispanic to serve as Surgeon General. Novello also served as Commissioner of Health for the State of New York from 1999 to 2006. Novello has received numerous awards including more than fifty honorary degrees,was elected to the National Academy of Medicine in 2000,and has been inducted into the National Women's Hall of Fame. Her memoir,Duty Calls:Lessons Learned from an Unexpected Life of Service,was published in 2024.

Previously a professor in the Faculty of Health Science at York University,Dr. Orbinski founded the Dahdaleh Institute of Global Health Research.

Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is a nationally ranked,freestanding acute care children's hospital in the East Hollywood district of Los Angeles,on Sunset Boulevard at the corner of Vermont Avenue. The hospital has been academically affiliated with the Keck School of Medicine of the University of Southern California since 1932 and the hospital features 401 pediatric beds. The hospital provides comprehensive pediatric specialties and subspecialties to infants,children,teens,and young adults generally aged 0–21 throughout California and the west coast. The hospital also sometimes treats adults that require pediatric care. The hospital has a rooftop helipad and is an ACS verified level I pediatric trauma center,one of a few in the region. The hospital features a regional pediatric intensive-care unit and an American Academy of Pediatrics verified level IV neonatal intensive care unit.

He served concurrently as acting Assistant Secretary for Health from January 22,2009 to June 25,2009,and as the Deputy Director and Director of the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research (CDER) at the Food and Drug Administration from 2001 to 2007. As the Acting Surgeon General,he was the commander of the United States Public Health Service Commissioned Corps and,while serving as the Assistant Secretary for Health,was the operational head of the Public Health Service.

Joan Hodgman was a pioneer of neonatology. Her leadership and influence helped develop neonatology as a specialty. She practiced at LAC+USC Medical Center for more than 60 years,holding various positions,including Director of the Divisions of Neonatology. She worked to develop the intensive care unit with guidelines on neonatal care. She later received the AAP Virginia Apgar Award in 1999,the highest award offered in neonatology. She is well known by all practicing neonatologists;Dr. Opas,chief of pediatrics at USC referred to her as one of neonatology's "great sages."

Nadine Burke Harris is a Canadian-American pediatrician who was the Surgeon General of California between 2019 and 2022;she is the first person appointed to that position. She is known for linking adverse childhood experiences and toxic stress with harmful effects to health later in life. Hailed as a pioneer in the treatment of toxic stress,she is an advisory council member for the Clinton Foundation's "Too Small to Fail" campaign,and the founder and former chief executive officer of the Center for Youth Wellness. Her work was also featured in Paul Tough's book How Children Succeed.
Rohit Varma is an Indian-American ophthalmologist and professor of ophthalmology and preventive medicine. In 2014,he was named director of the USC Eye Institute and chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology for Keck School of Medicine of USC. In March 2016,Varma was named the interim dean of the Keck School of Medicine,and in November was named dean. In October 2017,USC announced that he stepped down as dean. In October 2018,Varma became the founding director of the Southern California Eyecare and Vision Research Institute.
Barbara Ross-Lee,D.O. is an American physician,academic,and the first African-American woman to serve as dean of a U.S. medical school;she is also known as the sister of Diana Ross along with being the aunt of actress Tracee Ellis Ross,and singer-songwriters Rhonda Ross Kendrick and Evan Ross. She majored in biology and chemistry at Wayne State University,graduating in 1965. Then,in 1969,she entered Michigan State University's College of Osteopathic Medicine. Ross-Lee then went on to open her own private family practice,teach as a professor,and hold other positions within the medical community. In 1993,she was elected as the first woman dean of a medical school,at Ohio University's Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has earned several awards and honors for her work and accomplishments.

The office was created on January 7,2019,by Governor Gavin Newsom and requires confirmation from the California State Senate.
Sonia Yris Angell is an American public health figure. She is a Bloomberg Distinguished Professor of the Practice of American Health in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. Angell also maintains a clinical professorship of medicine in the Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. In 2020,after resigning as director of the California Department of Public Health,Angell was elected a Member of the National Academy of Medicine.
Howard Hu is an American physician-scientist,internist,and specialist in preventive medicine and environmental health. He is currently the Flora L. Thornton Chair and Professor of Population and Public Health Sciences at the Keck School of Medicine at the University of Southern California. He previously taught at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health,University of Michigan School of Public Health,and University of Toronto,where he served as founding dean of the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Hu has served on the Board of Directors for Physicians for Human Rights,where he was involved in four of the nonprofit's fact-finding missions.
Eila Curlee Skinner is an American urologic oncologist and surgeon specializing in bladder reconstruction and continent urinary diversion. She is the Thomas A. Stamey Research professor and chair of urology at the Stanford University School of Medicine.
