Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch Post-Impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in Western art history. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life. They include landscapes, still lifes, portraits, and self-portraits, and are characterised by bold colours and dramatic, impulsive and expressive brushwork that contributed to the foundations of modern art. Not commercially successful, he struggled with severe depression and poverty, eventually leading to suicide at the age of 37.

Flemish literature is literature from Flanders, historically a region comprising parts of present-day Belgium, France and the Netherlands. Beatrijs is a poem written in last quarter of 14th century (ca.1374), possibly by Diederic van Assenede, and is an original Dutch poem about the legend of a nun, Beatrijs, who deserted her convent for the love of a man, lives with him for seven years and has two children. When their money is low he deserts her and she becomes a prostitute to support her children for another seven years. One day she is near her old convent, so she inquires discreetly what has become of the nun Beatrijs, and learns that people think Beatrijs is still at the convent. One night a voice urges her to return to the convent, and when she returns, Beatrijs learns that Mary has been acting in her role at the convent, and she can return without anyone knowing of her absence.
Count Constant de Kerchove de Denterghem was a Belgian liberal politician. He was a son of Jean de Kerchove and Sabine della Faille d'Assenede, both descendants of Flemish nobility. He was a nephew of Jozef-Sebastiaan della Faille d'Assenede, who was burgomaster of Ghent under French rule.

Jean Baptiste Assenede (also Jan Baptist Assenede, Jean Baptiste Assenie, Jean Baptiste Asseny and nickname Lantaren was a Flemish painter from the Baroque who was active in Italy in the middle of the 17th century. He was born in Tournai in the first half of 17th century. He is recorded in Rome from 1646 to 1655. Here he became a member of the Bentvueghels, an association of mainly Dutch and Flemish artists active in Rome. His nickname was 'Lantaren', which is Dutch for 'Lantern'. No existing work of his hand is known today.

Oosteeklo is a historic village in the Flemish province of East Flanders, Belgium, which since 1977 has been a subdivision of the municipality of Assenede. The village is situated 9 km east of Eeklo and 17 km north of Ghent, about 9 km from the border with the Netherlands, and lies approximately 9 metres above sea-level.
