Dikko Umar Radda (born 10 September 1969) is a Nigerian economist and politician. He was elected governor of Katsina State in the 2023 Nigerian gubernatorial elections. [1] [2] He served as the director-general of the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN). [3]

Early life and education

He was born on 10 September 1969 in Hayin Gada Town, a Fulani from Dutsin-Ma Local government area of Katsina state, Nigeria.

Radda started his basic education at Radda Primary School from 1974 to 1980. He attended Zaria Teachers College between 1980 and 1985. [4] He also attended Kafanchan College of Education in 1986–1990, where he obtained his NCE certificate. Later, he attended Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University in Bauchi in 1992–1996, where he completed his B-Tech. Agricultural Economic and Extension (Hons) studies, then got admission into Ahmadu Bello University Zaria in 1998–2004 where he earned an MSC Agricultural Extension and Rural Sociology 2004. [5] He returned to ABU Zaria in 2005 to obtain a master's degree in international Affairs & Diplomacy. He earned his Ph.D. in Agriculture & Rural Sociology in 2015.

Political career

The period between 2013 and 2015 gave birth to the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Radda held posts in the party hierarchy, which saw him emerge as the APC National Welfare Secretary, a position he held for one year, from 2014 to 2015. After the 2015 general elections, he was appointed as Chief of Staff to the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Rt Hon Aminu Bello Masari. [6] [7] [8]

Philanthropy

Radda established the Gwagware Foundation in 2016. It helps people from rural communities improve their living conditions through the provision of basic social amenities. He supports them with foodstuff, medical care, water supply, and employment opportunities. [9]

For Dan Musa and Safana Local Government Areas, which are the second most affected areas in the state, in terms of bandits' attacks, the foundation distributed 70 bags of these items to each of the areas. For the other six most affected local government areas, the foundation distributed 40 bags of the same items to each of them. [10]

Gwagware Foundation extended the same humanitarian gesture to Malumfashi Local Government Prison Service. During fasting, members of the foundation took time one day and break their fasts with 150 inmates. Six inmates with minor cases were also freed by the foundation. [11]

On 17 January 2022, five hundred youths from Katsina State were successfully trained in computer skills and tailoring by the Gwagware Foundation. The participants, including both youths and women, were drawn from Daura, Funtua, and Katsina zones. Upon completing the training, they received start-up packs to enhance their entrepreneurial skills, enabling them to contribute to the growth and development of the state.

On 31 January 2022, Gwagware Foundation donated 5,000 books on different subjects to Junior and Senior Secondary Schools in Batagarawa local government area of Katsina state. The foundation attaches a lot of importance to the development of education in Katsina State. [12]

Radda received the Distinguished Leadership Award from the Nigeria Civil Service Union (NCSU) in 2019. [13]

It is one of the largest boarding schools in Northern Nigeria and was the most-celebrated post-primary schools there up to the early 1960s. The school is known for the large number of elites from the region who attended and counts among its alumni include Tafawa Balewa who was Prime Minister of Nigeria from 1960 to 1966, four heads of state of Nigeria. The school is located along Gaskiya road in the Tukur -Tukur area of Zaria.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Aminu Bello Masari</span> Nigerian politician (born 1950)

Aminu Bello Masari is a Nigerian politician who served as governor of Katsina State from 2015 to 2023. He was the Commissioner for works, housing and transport Katsina state from 1991 to 1993. He was the speaker of the Nigerian House of Representatives between 2003 and 2007. Masari hails from Masari village of Kafur local government area of Katsina State. In recognition of his service to Nigeria, Aminu Masari received the National Award of honour of Commander of the Federal Republic (CFR) in 2005, by His Excellency, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR. This is in addition to the several other honours and awards that he has been dressed with.

Darius Dickson Ishaku is a Nigerian architect, urban planner, university lecturer and politician. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party and served as the governor of Taraba State from May 2015 to May 2023.

Bello Mandiya is a Nigerian politician, who was the elected Senator for the Katsina South Senatorial district in February 2019 Nigerian general elections on the platform of All Progressives Congress (APC). He was the former chief of staff to the Katsina State governor Aminu Bello Masari.

He administered the oath of office to the former governor of Katsina State Rt. Hon. Alh. Aminu Bello Masari. He was the chairman of the Taraba State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal who declared Hajiya Aisha Jummai Alhassan of the All Progressive Congress (APC) winner of the controversial governorship election, 2015 in Taraba State.

The 2023 Niger State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Niger State, concurrent with elections to the Niger State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Abubakar Sani Bello is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

The 2023 Sokoto State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Sokoto State, concurrent with elections to the Sokoto State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—will be held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent PDP Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal is term-limited and cannot seek re-election to a third term.

The 2023 Zamfara State gubernatorial election will take place on 18 March 2023, to elect the Governor of Zamfara State, concurrent with elections to the Zamfara State House of Assembly as well as twenty-seven other gubernatorial elections and elections to all other state houses of assembly. The election—which was postponed from its original 11 March date—was held three weeks after the presidential election and National Assembly elections. Incumbent APC Governor Bello Matawalle has been renominated by his party and was defeated by Dauda Lawal of PDP on 18th of March 2023.

Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa is the former Secretary to the State Government of Katsina State and a former Commissioner for Education in Katsina State.

Othman Ladan Baki was a retired Nigerian government official. He is the son of Kankia Muhammad Sada Nadada, and the grandson of Sarkin Katsina Muhammadu Dikko. He was the supervisor of Works Survey and Rural Water Supply in Katsina Local Government Area in 1960. Ladan was a member of the Northern House of Assembly from 1952 to 1956 and was re-elected in 1956. He was a parliamentary secretary at the Ministry of Trade and Industry from 1955 to 1956 and then Minister of Trade, Northern Nigeria in 1965, and later Provincial Commissioner for Zaria Province from 1962 to 1965. In 1982 Dr. Othman Ladan-Baki, OFR, was appointed as the chairman, National Assembly Service Commission.

The 2023 Nigerian Senate elections in Katsina State will be held on 25 February 2023, to elect the 3 federal Senators from Katsina State, one from each of the state's three senatorial districts. The elections will coincide with the 2023 presidential election, as well as other elections to the Senate and elections to the House of Representatives; with state elections being held two weeks later. Primaries were held between 4 April and 9 June 2022.

Abdulaziz Musa Yar'Adua is a Nigerian politician and retired military officer who is the senator representing Katsina Central senatorial district since 2023. He is a brother of former Nigerian President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua and former de facto vice president General Shehu Musa Yar'Adua.
