Dilshad Akhtar (died 28 January 1996; sometimes spelled as Dilshad Akhter) was an Indian singer of Punjabi folk music who also worked as a playback singer in many Punjabi films. [1] [2] Manpreet Akhtar, his sister, and Sandeep Akhtar, his cousin, were also singers. [3]

Biography

Akhtar was born in the Giljewala village of Sri Muktsar Sahib district [4] of Indian Punjab and learned music from his teacher in Faridkot. [4]

On January 28, 1996, Akhtar was killed by a police officer, during a program in Singhpura village of Gurdaspur district, when he refused to entertain a request for a song from the police officer. [4] [2]

The second Guru of the Sikhs, Guru Angad was born in the village Matte-di-Sarai (Sarainaga) in the same district. Earlier the city was called Khidrana/Khidrane di dhab, the city was named Muktsar after the Battle of Muktsar in 1705 and the district headquarters in 1995.
