Wu-Tang Clan is an American hip hop group formed in Staten Island,New York City,in 1992. Its original members include RZA,GZA,Ol' Dirty Bastard,Method Man,Raekwon,Ghostface Killah,Inspectah Deck,U-God,and Masta Killa. Close affiliate Cappadonna later became an official member. Wu-Tang Clan are regarded as a highly influential group in hip hop,helping to popularize and develop the East Coast hip hop and hardcore hip hop styles.

Recording sessions for the album began midway through 1995 at producer RZA's basement studio in the New York City borough of Staten Island. The album heavily samples dialogue from the martial arts film Shogun Assassin and maintains a dark atmosphere throughout,incorporating lyrical references to chess,crime and philosophy. Liquid Swords features numerous guest appearances from the entire nine piece Wu-Tang Clan,and also Wu-Tang affiliate Killah Priest.

It was the second solo album,after Method Man's Tical to be released from the nine-member Wu-Tang Clan following the release of their debut album. Return to the 36 Chambers was primarily produced by RZA,with additional production from Ol' Dirty Bastard,and affiliates True Master and 4th Disciple. Selwyn Bougard,now known as El-Divine Amir Bey,better known by his stage name 4th Disciple,is a record producer and audio engineer who was one of the founding members of Killarmy and one of the best-known Wu-Tang-affiliated producers. He is the only member of the Wu Elements to have worked on Wu-Tang Clan's first breakthrough album,as a mixer.
Terrance Hamlin,better known as 9th Prince,is an American rapper and one of the founding members of rap group Killarmy. He was initially responsible for bringing the various members together,under the guide of his brother. He released his solo debut album Granddaddy Flow in 2003. He is the younger brother of RZA. He went by the alias Madman &Iron Fingers,especially in his early recordings. 9th Prince gets his name from the kung-fu movie Shaolin Prince. He has pushed hard for a reunion album with his group,and helped to release a 'greatest hits' album.
Dom Pachino is a rapper of Puerto Rican descent. He is a former member of the rap group Killarmy and also has a solo career. He is also known as P.R. Terrorist,but he has rarely used this name since the September 11,2001 attacks afraid that it may be taken the wrong way and affect sales.

The album peaked at number 34 on the Billboard 200 and number 10 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums in the United States. The album features the singles "Camouflage Ninjas" b/w "Wake Up" and "Wu-Renegades" b/w "Clash of the Titans".
