Background

The song's release was first teased by band frontman Maynard James Keenan on December 31, 2017. [4] The song was later released for streaming the next day, on January 1, 2018, [5] and released as a digital download on January 2, 2018. [6] The song is their second released from their fourth studio album Eat the Elephant , the first being "The Doomed" in October 2017. [7] The song was released on a physical 10 inch vinyl on March 9, 2018, alongside "The Doomed". [8] Multiple outlets described it as the second single from their fourth studio album, [9] [10] [11] while others just referred to it as a song from the album. [12] A music video was released on March 9 as well; consisting of footage of people marching in unison, in black and white, while looking at their cell phones. [13] The video transitions from black and white to color once people stop marching, put down their phones, and start interacting with one another. [13]

The band's record label initially felt a reluctance in hearing that the band wished to issue a six minute long single, though upon hearing the track, agreed upon the band's decision. [14]

Composition and themes

The song's sound has been described as "atmospheric", [15] [6] "cinematic", [6] and "ethereal". [15] [8] The first half of the song is as a piano ballad with contemplative vocals by Keenan, with a slow and steady beat, while the latter half was described as evolving into something grander without losing its sense of melancholy, giving the song a sombre sounding intro, and a more hopeful sounding ending. [16] [6] [17] The middle part of the song contains a minute long piano interlude. [14] While the latter half of the song eventually adds Billy Howerdel's "squalling" and "defiant" guitar parts, and "rowdy" drum parts by Jeff Friedl, the piano part remains dominant throughout the track. [18] Keenan described the song as created by "a new approach to composing", something he described as "intimidating" due to the band already having a recognizable and established sound, but something he wanted to push forward with on the song anyway. [19] His vocal take was described as a "restrained melodic rasp" with a "whispery and vulnerable delivery" by rock website Loudwire. [6] Guitar World described the song as a mix between "a more surreal Smashing Pumpkins" and a "less electronic Radiohead". [20]

Lyrically, the song was described by Rolling Stone magazine as being about "societal failures" and how long-term planning has been replaced by "futile attempts at instant gratification". [18] The website noted that while earlier lyrics expressed a sense of defeat, such as "We have been overrun by our animal desire/ Addicts of the immediate keep us obedient and unaware", latter lyrics showed some hope, such as "Time to put the silicon obsession down/ Take a look around, find a way in the silence", though more as passing thoughts than as a rallying cry. [18] Howerdel described the song as being about "overcoming the slide into the numb", contrary to the prior song released from their fourth studio album, "The Doomed", which was meant "as a wakeup call". [19] Journalists noted that allusions to the "silicon obsession" seemed to allude the band speaking out against smart phones and social media in favor of personal interactions as well. [21] [22]

Reception

Metal Sucks praised the song, concluding that it is "a bit chill for my tastes, although I know that's where the band is at creatively right now. Still, it certainly sounds like APC, so longtime fans should be happy with it. [23] Loudwire listed it as one of the best rock songs of 2018 as of July, [24] and as their best hard rock song of 2018 at year end. [25]

A Perfect Circle is an American rock band formed in Los Angeles, California in 1999 by guitarist Billy Howerdel and Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan. A Perfect Circle released three of their four studio albums in the early 2000s: their debut Mer de Noms in 2000, a follow-up, Thirteenth Step in 2003; and an album of radically re-worked cover songs, Emotive, in 2004. Shortly after Emotive's release, the band went on hiatus; Keenan returned to Tool and started up solo work under the band name Puscifer, while Howerdel released a solo album, Keep Telling Myself It's Alright, under the moniker Ashes Divide. Band activity was sporadic in the following years; the band reformed in 2010, and played live shows on and off between 2010 and 2013, but fell into inactivity after the release of their greatest hits album, Three Sixty, and a live album box set, A Perfect Circle Live: Featuring Stone and Echo in late 2013. The band reformed in 2017 to record a fourth album, Eat the Elephant, which was released in 2018.

Eat the Elephant 2018 studio album by A Perfect Circle

Eat the Elephant is the fourth studio album by American rock band A Perfect Circle. It is their first album release in fourteen years since 2004's Emotive. While early work on new material traces back to as early as 2008, years of slow progress would ensue due to conflict between the band's chief music writers, frontman Maynard James Keenan and guitarist Billy Howerdel, largely stemming from their commitments to other projects and inability to come to an agreement on the direction to take the band. Renewed focus, alongside assistance from music producer Dave Sardy, helped propel the band into much more productive sessions across 2017, with the album being completed in early 2018. Thematically, the album covers a variety of Keenan's views on modern societal, religious, and political issues, focusing on his perceived lack of accountability in humanity. Musically, the album was viewed as an extension and maturation of their rock sound, adding more piano and electronic elements into songs for a more mellow sound than prior albums.
