Captain Divya Ajith Kumar is an Army Air Defense (AAD) officer in the Indian Army. She graduated from the Officers Training Academy, Chennai. [1] She is the first woman to be conferred by the Army with the Sword of Honour prize, given to the best cadet. [2] She led an all-woman contingent of 154 women officers and cadets during the Republic Day Parade in 2015. [3]

Early life and education

Divya Ajith Kumar was born in Chennai to a Tamil family. She is a first-generation soldier. She did her schooling at Good Shepherd Matriculation Higher Secondary School, Chennai and went to Stella Maris College, Chennai, where she completed her B.Com. (Hons). She joined the National Cadet Corps (NCC) and participated in the NCC women contingent in Rajpath. She later joined the Officers Training Academy (OTA), from which she graduated. Kumar was awarded the Sword of Honour prize, given to the best cadet. She was the first woman to be awarded the prize. [4]

Military career

Kumar was commissioned into Corps of Army Air Defence in September 2010. Kumar also jointly topped the Young Officers' course of the Army Air Defence College in 2011 and was awarded the Silver Gun Trophy. Kumar led the first all-women contingent of the Army on Republic Day in 2015. She led a contingent of 126 officers and 28 cadets during the parade, where US President Barack Obama was present as the chief guest. National Cadet Corps (India) Military youth organization

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is the youth wing of the Indian Armed Forces with its headquarters in New Delhi, India. It is open to school and college students on voluntary basis as a Tri-Services Organisation, comprising the Army, the Navy and the Air Wing, engaged in developing the youth of the country into disciplined and patriotic citizens. The soldier youth foundation in India is a voluntary organization which recruits cadets from high schools, higher secondary, colleges and universities all over India. The Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and drill. The officers and cadets have no liability for active military service once they complete their course. The emblem of the NCC consists of 3 colours; red, dark blue and light blue. These colours represent the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force respectively. The 17 lotuses indicate the 17 directories of India.

Indian Military Academy Military academy in Dehradun, India

The Indian Military Academy (IMA) is the oldest Military Academy in India, and trains officers for the Indian Army. Located in Dehradun, Uttarakhand, it was established in 1932 following a recommendation by a military committee set up under the chairmanship of General Sir Philip Chetwode. From a class of 40 male cadets in 1932, IMA now has a sanctioned capacity of 1,650. Cadets undergo a training course varying between 3 and 16 months depending on entry criteria. On completion of the course at IMA cadets are permanently commissioned into the army as Lieutenants.

The National Cadet Corps (NCC) is a youth organisation in Sri Lanka, sponsored by the Ministry of Defence, which operates in schools, and normally includes Army, Navy and Air Force sections. The corp is open for secondary school students on voluntary basis and its officers are government teachers and educational administrators, who serve as instructors. The Cadets are given basic military training in small arms and parades, as well as leadership training.

Passing out (military) Ceremony to complete a course in military education

Passing out is the completion of a course by military or other service personnel or the graduation from a college, largely in Commonwealth nations. Soldiers sometimes take part in a passing out parade upon completion of a basic training course. The military parade during the passing out also consists of military bands and other displays of synchronization discipline such as acrobatics.

The Officers Training Academy (OTA) is a training establishment of the Indian Army that trains officers for the Short Service Commission (SSC). The 49-week course at the OTA prepares graduates for all branches of the Army, except for the Army Medical Corps. A new academy was set up at Gaya in 2011; but was given the go-ahead in December 2019 to be disbanded.

Women in the Pakistan Armed Forces are the female officers who serve in the Pakistan Armed Forces. Women have been taking part in Pakistani military since 1947, after the establishment of Pakistan. In 2006, the first women fighter pilot batch joined the combat aerial mission command of PAF. The Pakistan Navy prohibits women from serving in the combat branch. Women in the Indian Armed Forces

All wings of the Indian Armed Forces prohibit women from serving in combat roles. Women are only allowed in combat support services and supervisory roles. Indian Air Force had 13.09% and 8.50%, Indian Navy 6% and 3% women, and Indian Army 3.80% and 3% in December 2018 and December 2014 respectively.

Indian military bands

The Indian military bands consists of musicians from the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force. Indian military bands regularly participate in international festivals and take part in celebrations dedicated to various national events. These bands are permanent participants in the Delhi Republic Day parade on the Rajpath. Today, the Indian Armed Forces have more than 50 military brass bands and 400 pipe bands and corps of drums. A Tri-Services Band refers to a joint Indian Armed Forces military band that performs together as a unit. At the Spasskaya Tower Military Music Festival and Tattoo in Moscow, the band consisted of 7 officers and 55 musicians. The Military Music Wing of the Army Education Corps is the principal educational institution of the armed forces that provides instruction to musicians of all ranks. Instruction is also provided by the Military Music Training Center and the Indian Navy School of Music.

Judge Advocate Generals Department (India) Military unit

The Judge Advocate General's (JAG) Department is the legal branch of the Indian Army. It deals with military related disciplinary cases and litigation and assists in providing legal assistance to the army in human rights matters and the rule of law among other things. The department consists of legally qualified Army officers who are educated in military law and provide legal help to the military in all aspects. The department supports the Judge Advocate General who is the legal and judicial chief of India and advises the Chief of the Army Staff of legal matters. The JAG's Department is also responsible for emerging fields of military law such as those related to cyber laws, space laws, terrorism and human rights violations. The service rendered in the JAG's Department are considered to be Judicial service as per the regulations for the Indian Army.

The Officers Training Academy Military Band is a musical unit in the Indian Armed Forces based out of Chennai. The OTA Military Band was established in 1973 from an amalgamation of musicians from various regiments in the Indian Army. Since then the band has been involved in boosting the morale and supporting officer cadets during their training at OTA. The band has participated in passing out parades, symphonic concerts, and national military parades. It also performs locally in neighborhoods such as St. Thomas Mount.
