Donna Spiegelman is a biostatistician and epidemiologist who works at the interface between the two fields as a methodologist, applying statistical solutions to address potential biases in epidemiologic studies. [1]
Spiegelman's area of work includes methods for statistical corrections for exposure measurement error, environmental and nutritional epidemiology, HIV/AIDS epidemiology, prevention of cervical cancer and cardiometabolic diseases. [2] [3] Since 2018, Spiegelman's work has been oriented towards the methods for, and the practice of, implementation and prevention science. [4] [5] [6]
Since 1992 Spiegelman has held faculty appointments at the Tufts University School of Medicine, and in the Departments of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Nutrition and Global Health at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public. [7] In 2018 she moved to Biostatistics at Yale School of Public Health. She received the NIH Director’s Pioneer Award in 2014, to advance the emerging field of implementation science to promote the global and domestic health agenda by the development and dissemination of new methods for implementation science. In 2018 became the inaugural Director of the Center for Methods in Implementation and Prevention Science at Yale. [8]
Spiegelman began her career in public health began in the late 1970s as a statistical analyst in the Occupational Health Program in the Department of Environmental Health at Harvard School of Public Health (HSPH). After deciding to return for a graduate degree, she was admitted to both the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at HSPH. She wrote her dissertation on the design and analysis of epidemiologic investigations [9] in the presence of errors in the measurement and classification of the exposure variable and received her Sc.D. in 1989. In 1992, she returned to Harvard to become Assistant Professor of Epidemiologic Methods, and by 2001, she was promoted to full Professor with tenure, in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, and later joined the Departments of Nutrition and Global Health at Harvard as well. In 2018, after retiring from Harvard as Professor Emerita of Epidemiologic Methods in the Departments of Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Nutrition and Global Health, she became Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Biostatistics and inaugural director of Yale’s Center on Methods for Implementation and Prevention Science (CMIPS) CMIPS has grown to include five primary faculty and an increasing number of trainees, research scientists, and graduate students. [10] With the recent establishment of the Implementation Science Methods Pathway with the Masters of Science and Ph.D. programs in the Department of Biostatistics at Yale, interest and expertise in implementation science methods will further advance. [11]
Spiegelman has pursued this interest in measurement error throughout her career, holding two longstanding grants from the National Institutes of Health to study statistical methods to account for exposure uncertainty in environmental epidemiology and in cancer epidemiology, since in 2004. [12] [13] As a post-doctoral fellow at the Channing Laboratory at Harvard Medical School in the early 1990s, she began a decades long collaboration with the Principal Investigators of the Nurses’ Health Studies and the Health Professionals Follow-up Study. [14] [15]
Spiegelman was named a Fellow of the American Statistical Association in 2001. She was awarded Reviewer of the Year, American Journal of Public Health’s Editor’s Choice Award in 2017. [16] [17] She received Mentoring Award from the Committee on the Advancement of Women Faculty, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, in 2018, along with the Distinguished Service Award from the Department of Epidemiology. [18]
Spiegelman has been engaged in Jewish peace advocacy throughout her adult life. In 2002, she co-founded the U.S. Jewish peace organization, Brit Tzedek v’Shalom, which was integrated into the Jewish peace lobby, JStreet, in 2010. [19] [20] Spiegelman played an instrumental role in this integration, which provided the community basis for the growth and impact of JStreet. [21] [22] [23] The goal of these organizations is to achieve a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, by influencing the U.S. government as American Jews to support this approach in their geopolitical interactions. [24] [25]
In 2006, she co-founded Friends of Cambridge Rindge and Latin School, a 501(C)3 non-profit devoted to increasing equity and opportunity at this high school, Cambridge Rindge and Latin School. [26]

Joseph L. Fleiss was an American professor of biostatistics at the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health, where he also served as head of the Division of Biostatistics from 1975 to 1992. He is known for his work in mental health statistics, particularly assessing the reliability of diagnostic classifications, and the measures, models, and control of errors in categorization.
The Yale School of Public Health (YSPH) was founded in 1915 by Charles-Edward Amory Winslow and is one of the oldest public health masters programs in the United States. It is consistently rated among the best schools of public health in the country, receiving recent rankings of 3rd for its doctoral program in epidemiology. YSPH is both a department within the school of medicine as well as an independent, CEPH-certified school of public health.
Sander Greenland is an American statistician and epidemiologist with many contributions to statistical and epidemiologic methods including Bayesian and causal inference, bias analysis, and meta-analysis. His focus has been the extensions, limitations, and misuses of statistical methods in nonexperimental studies, especially in postmarketing surveillance of drugs, vaccines, and medical devices. He received honors Bachelor's and master's degrees in mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley, where he was Regent's and National Science Foundation Fellow in Mathematics, and then received Master's and Doctoral degrees in epidemiology from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), where he was Regent's Fellow in Epidemiology. After serving as an assistant professor of biostatistics at Harvard, he joined the UCLA Epidemiology faculty in 1980 where he became Professor of Epidemiology in the Fielding School of Public Health in 1989, and Professor of Statistics in the UCLA College of Letters and Science in 1999. He moved to Emeritus status in 2012 and the following year he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Medicine by the University of Aarhus, Denmark.
Nutritional epidemiology examines dietary and nutritional factors in relation to disease occurrence at a population level. Nutritional epidemiology is a relatively new field of medical research that studies the relationship between nutrition and health. It is a young discipline in epidemiology that is continuing to grow in relevance to present-day health concerns. Diet and physical activity are difficult to measure accurately, which may partly explain why nutrition has received less attention than other risk factors for disease in epidemiology. Nutritional epidemiology uses knowledge from nutritional science to aid in the understanding of human nutrition and the explanation of basic underlying mechanisms. Nutritional science information is also used in the development of nutritional epidemiological studies and interventions including clinical, case-control and cohort studies. Nutritional epidemiological methods have been developed to study the relationship between diet and disease. Findings from these studies impact public health as they guide the development of dietary recommendations including those tailored specifically for the prevention of certain diseases, conditions and cancers. It is argued by western researchers that nutritional epidemiology should be a core component in the training of all health and social service professions because of its increasing relevance and past successes in improving the health of the public worldwide. However, it is also argued that nutritional epidemiological studies yield unreliable findings as they rely on the role of diet in health and disease, which is known as an exposure that is susceptible to considerable measurement error.
Michael B. Bracken is an American perinatal epidemiologist. He is the Susan Dwight Bliss Professor of Epidemiology at the Yale School of Public Health, and Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences, and Professor of Neurology at the Yale School of Medicine. He is co-director of the Yale Center for Perinatal, Pediatric and Environmental Epidemiology.
Miguel Hernán is a Spanish–American epidemiologist. He is the Director of the CAUSALab, Kolokotrones Professor of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, and Member of the Faculty at the Harvard–MIT Program in Health Sciences and Technology.
Francesca Dominici is a Harvard Professor who develops methodology in causal inference and data science and leads research projects that combine big data with health policy and climate change. She is a professor of biostatistics, director of the Harvard Data Science Initiative, and a former senior associate dean for research in the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.
Amy Helen Herring is an American biostatistician interested in longitudinal data and reproductive health. Formerly the Carol Remmer Angle Distinguished Professor of Children's Environmental Health at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, she is now Sara & Charles Ayres Distinguished Professor in the Department of Statistical Science, Global Health Institute, and Department of Biostatistics & Bioinformatics of Duke University.
Elizabeth Anne (Lianne) Sheppard is an American statistician. She specializes in biostatistics and environmental statistics, and in particular in the effects of air quality on health. She is a Professor of Environmental and Occupational Health Sciences and a Professor of Biostatistics in the University of Washington School of Public Health. In 2021, Dr. Sheppard was named to the Rohm & Haas Endowed Professorship of Public Health Sciences.
Tyler J. VanderWeele is the John L. Loeb and Frances Lehman Loeb Professor of Epidemiology in the Departments of Epidemiology and Biostatistics at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. He is also the co-director of Harvard University's Initiative on Health, Religion and Spirituality, the director of their Human Flourishing Program, and a faculty affiliate of the Harvard Institute for Quantitative Social Science. He holds degrees from the University of Oxford, University of Pennsylvania, and Harvard University in mathematics, philosophy, theology, finance, and biostatistics.

Bhramar Mukherjee is an Indian-American biostatistician, data scientist, professor and researcher. She is currently serving as the inaugural Senior Associate Dean of Public Health Data Science and Data Equity at the Yale School of Public Health from August 1, 2024. She is also appointed as Anna MR Lauder Professor of Biostatistics, Professor of Epidemiology with secondary appointment as Professor of Statistics and Data Science at Yale University.
Sherri Rose is an American biostatistician. She is an associate professor of health care policy at Stanford University, and once worked at Harvard University. A fellow of the American Statistical Association, she has served as co-editor of Biostatistics since 2019 and Chair of the American Statistical Association’s Biometrics Section. Her research focuses on statistical machine learning for health care policy.
Ronald S. Brookmeyer is an American public health researcher. He is a professor of biostatistics at the UCLA Fielding School of Public Health.
J.
