Dorothy Howard was an American folklorist, public school teacher, principal, and professor at Frostburg State University. Howard was an early proponent of folklore in education and a pioneer in the field of children's folklore. The American Folklore Society's Folklore and Education Prize is named after her.
Howard was born Dorothy Gray Mills in July 1902, in Texas. She married James Howard in 1925, and the couple had two children. [1] After her retirement, Howard lived in Roswell, New Mexico, from 1969. Eventually, due to failing health, Howard moved to Greenfield, Massachusetts, where she died in 1996 at the age of ninety-three. [2]
Howard graduated from North Texas State Teacher's College (now known as University of North Texas) with a B.S. in education in 1923. [3]
In 1938, Howard earned her doctorate in education from New York University. Her dissertation was titled, “Folk Jingles of American Children: A Collection and Study of Rhymes Used by Children Today.” [4]
Howard began her career as a schoolteacher in 1920 at the age of seventeen when she took over for a fourth grade teacher who passed away suddenly in a nearby community. Following her graduation from North Texas State Teacher's College in 1923, she worked as a teacher, and eventually principal, in public schools in Texas, New York, and New Jersey until 1944. [5]
In 1944, Howard became a professor at Frostburg State University in the English department. She would continue in that role until 1967. [6] She spent the next two years, from 1967 until 1969 as a visiting professor of English at the University of Nebraska. [7]
For 10 months in 1954–1955, Howard documented the play of Australian children as part of a postdoctoral Fulbright Fellowship. [8] She was the first person to ever undertake such documentation of Australian children's folklore in a systematic way. [9]
Howard's work focused on the play of children, including playground songs, chants, rhymes, even insults, and she is one of, if not the, first person to earn a Ph.D. for the study of children's "folk jingles," as Howard called them. [10] For her work with children's folklore and her use of folklore in education, she has been described as a pioneer in the field by scholars and scholarly organizations, including the American Folklore Society and The Anthropological Association for the Study of Play. [11] [12] Her Australian research collection was eventually donated to Museum Victoria in 2000. [13]
Howard published extensively, including articles for the general public such as a piece in The New Yorker, as well as many book chapters, peer-reviewed articles in journals such as The Journal of American Folklore and Western Folklore, book reviews, poetry, and book-length manuscripts:
Sylvia Plath was an American poet, novelist, and short story writer. She is credited with advancing the genre of confessional poetry and is best known for two of her published collections, The Colossus and Other Poems (1960) and Ariel (1965), and also The Bell Jar, a semi-autobiographical novel published shortly before her suicide in 1963. The Collected Poems was published in 1981, which included previously unpublished works. For this collection Plath was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in Poetry in 1982, making her the fourth to receive this honour posthumously.
Kate Douglas Wiggin was an American educator, author and composer. She wrote children's stories, most notably the classic children's novel Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm, and composed collections of children's songs. She started the first free kindergarten in San Francisco in 1878. With her sister during the 1880s, she also established a training school for kindergarten teachers. Kate Wiggin devoted her adult life to the welfare of children in an era when children were commonly thought of as cheap labor.
Iona Margaret Balfour Opie, and Peter Mason Opie were an English married team of folklorists who applied modern techniques to understanding children's literature and play, in studies such as The Oxford Dictionary of Nursery Rhymes (1951) and The Lore and Language of Schoolchildren (1959). They were also noted anthologists, assembled large collections of children's literature, toys, and games and were regarded as world-famous authorities on children's lore and customs.
Minnie Pwerle was an Australian Aboriginal artist. She came from Utopia, Northern Territory, a cattle station in the Sandover area of Central Australia 300 kilometres (190 mi) northeast of Alice Springs.
Dorothy Louise Porter Wesley was a librarian, bibliographer and curator, who built the Moorland-Spingarn Research Center at Howard University into a world-class research collection. She was the first African American to receive a library science degree from Columbia University. Porter published numerous bibliographies on African American history. When she realized that the Dewey Decimal System had only two classification numbers for African Americans, one for slavery and one for colonization, she created a new classification system that ordered books by genre and author.

Born in Philadelphia and educated at Moore Institute of Art, she began as a painter in the style of the American social realist school, before turning to Abstract Expressionism through her pioneering work in silk screening and sculptural collage. The Pioneer Settlement, in Swan Hill, Victoria, is Australia's first open-air museum, portraying life on the Murray in the era 1830-1930. It opened in 1966 as the Swan Hill Folk Museum, before being renamed, following a visit by the Queen in 1970. It contains approximately 50 replica buildings, including Masonic hall, coach-house, post office, photographic studio, original 1895 kaiserpanorama, and newspaper office. The collection also contains numerous tractors – including the first tractor ever brought to Australia – and historic vehicles, and two 19th century riverboats, including the 1876 paddlesteamer PS Gem. This vessel was towed to the site in 1963, and now functions as the main entrance and contains a restaurant.
Belle Hunt Shortridge was an American writer of poetry, novels, short stories, and juvenile literature. She was the first person of European descent to be born in Wise County, Texas. She was a versatile and prolific writer, when the brief time allotted to her is considered. She published a volume of poems entitled Lone Star Lights (1890), two novels, Held in Trust (1892) and Circumstance (1893), and numerous short stories and sketches. Shortridge died in 1893.
