N836D is a former Eastern Air Lines Douglas DC-7B restored to flying condition and previously operated from Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport, in Opa-locka, Florida. The aircraft's airworthiness certificate expired in June 2013 [1] and it remains at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on static display. [2]
The Douglas DC-7 is a four-engined low-wing cantilever monoplane powered by four Wright R-3350-30W 18-cylinder air cooled radial engines. [3] The type first flew in 1953 and was in production between 1953 and 1958.
The aircraft (serial number 45345, line number 928) [3] was originally delivered on January 23, 1958. [4] It flew with Eastern as an airliner in scheduled service until retirement in 1965, when it was sold to California Airmotive, a used aircraft dealer. California Airmotive sold the aircraft to Detroit-based Nomads Travel Club in 1966. The club used it until the early 1970s when it was replaced by a Lockheed Electra. After retirement by Nomads, it was parked at Detroit's Metropolitan Wayne County Airport until 1972 when it was sold again to Joe Kocour and flown to St. Paul's Downtown Airport/Holman Field. It stayed there unused for 32 years, [4] with the owners occasionally running the engines but never flying the airplane. In November 2003, it was sold to two aviation enthusiasts who prepared the aircraft for a ferry flight to their hometown of Miami, where restoration could begin in earnest at their home base of Opa-locka Executive Airport. After a lot of work was done and the aircraft was once again airworthy, an FAA Ferry Permit was issued and the aircraft departed St. Paul for Opa-locka on 7 August 2004. A major restoration of the aircraft was completed by late 2009.
In October 2007, the FAA issued a ruling that allowed historically significant aircraft to carry passengers. The program was developed to allow owners of these aircraft to generate funds for the preservation of their aircraft by offering flights to the general public. There are a number of groups offering flights on World War II bomber aircraft but the DC-7B is the largest aircraft in the program. [4]
But many new safety regulations were in effect. Interior materials were upgraded so as to meet new fire standards. Egress slides were installed. Seats had to be replaced, but the original seats are preserved in storage for the day the aircraft is again grounded. Likewise, the original design had hat shelves that are now preserved in storage. [5]
By September 2009 the restoration was essentially complete, and the aircraft was painted in vintage Eastern Airlines livery. Final adjustments and FAA inspections and paperwork were completed by July 2010 and the aircraft made its first post-restoration flight on July 4, 2010. Since then, the aircraft has been flown to airshows in the USA, including EAA AirVenture in Oshkosh, Thunder over Michigan and Sun 'n Fun in Lakeland, Florida. In May 2011, it completed its first international flight when it flew round-trip between Miami and St. Maarten. On November 18, 2011, the aircraft flew from Opa-locka, Florida to Charlotte, North Carolina with Captain "Sully" Sullenberger and first officer Jeff Skiles on board as a charity flight. On landing in Charlotte, the crew and passengers toured the "Miracle on the Hudson" aircraft, US Air flight 1549, that landed in the Hudson in 2009. On the return flight to Florida, without Capt. Sully or Skiles on board, the aircraft lost the number 3 engine on takeoff and returned to Charlotte for an uneventful landing.
In early 2013 the aircraft experienced a failure after takeoff on its number three engine, and it made an emergency landing at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. It remains on temporary static display at the Carolinas Aviation Museum as of November 2014, awaiting return to flight.

Panama City–Bay County International Airport was a public airport 3 miles (4.8 km) northwest of Panama City, in Bay County, Florida. It was owned and operated by the Panama City–Bay County Airport and Industrial District. All airline services moved to the Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport on May 22, 2010, but the airfield was open to general aviation aircraft until October 1, 2010. The grounds will eventually be turned over to LUK-MB1 LLC, which plans to remove the runways and build homes, shops, walking trails and a marina.
Melbourne Orlando International Airport is a public airport 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northwest of downtown Melbourne, in Brevard County, Florida, United States, and 70 miles (113 km) southeast of Orlando, located on central Florida's Space Coast. The Douglas DC-7 is an American transport aircraft built by the Douglas Aircraft Company from 1953 to 1958. A derivative of the DC-6, it was the last major piston engine-powered transport made by Douglas, being developed shortly after the earliest jet airliner—the de Havilland Comet—entered service and only a few years before the jet-powered Douglas DC-8 first flew in 1958. Larger numbers of both DC-7B and DC-7C variants were also built.

ValuJet Airlines was an ultra low-cost airline in the United States that operated from 1992 until 1997, when it was rebranded as AirTran Airlines after joining forces with AirTran Airways. It was headquartered in unincorporated Clayton County, Georgia, that operated regularly scheduled domestic and international flights in the Eastern United States and Canada during the 1990s. The company was founded in 1992 and was notorious for its sometimes dangerous cost-cutting measures. All of the airline's planes were purchased used from other airlines; very little training was provided to workers; and contractors were used for maintenance and other services. The company quickly developed a reputation for safety issues. In 1995, the military refused ValuJet's bid to fly military personnel over safety worries, and officials at the FAA wanted the airline to be grounded.
Eastern Air Lines Flight 512 was a scheduled domestic passenger flight operated by Eastern Air Lines from Charlotte Municipal Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina, to Idlewild Airport in New York City. On November 30, 1962, while attempting to abort an attempted landing at its destination, the Douglas DC-7B operating the flight crashed after it failed to gain altitude and struck the ground. 25 of the 51 occupants of the plane died in the accident. Emergency crews responded, but rescuers were delayed by the thick fog and the soft terrain. An investigation launched after the crash found that the probable cause of the accident was that the pilots had made critical mistakes during the go-around that prevented the aircraft from gaining altitude.

The airport is owned by Palm Beach County and operated by the Palm Beach County Airports Department. Opened in 1994, it is the county's newest airport. It is located next to the site of the "fake" town of Apix, Florida.
Miami-Opa Locka Executive Airport is a joint civil-military airport located in Miami-Dade County, Florida 11 mi (18 km) north of downtown Miami. Part of the airport is in the city limits of Opa-locka. The National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015 called it a general aviation reliever airport.
The Sullenberger Aviation Museum, formerly the Carolinas Aviation Museum, is an aviation museum on the grounds of Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Fitchburg Municipal Airport is a public airport located 3 miles (5 km) southeast of the central business district of Fitchburg, a city in Worcester County, Massachusetts, United States. This airport is owned by the City of Fitchburg. The airport also serves as a base for the Fitchburg Pilots Association/EAA chapter 1454. This group uses the airport to host events such as Young Eagles and flights in EAA's Ford Trimotor. The airport underwent a renovation in 2020 that extended runway 14/32 by 500 feet to its current length of 5001 feet. The runway extension was to meet requirements for insurance companies to permit certain small jets to land and take off from the airport. The renovation removed runway 2/20. Occasionally the airport serves as a home for rock festivals such as The Warped Tour and Locobazooka.
Opa-locka West Airport was a county-owned public airport located 12 miles (19 km) northwest of the central business district of Miami, a city in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. It covered an area of 420 acres (170 ha) which contained two asphalt paved runways: 9/27 measuring 3,000 x 60 ft and 18/36 measuring 3,000 x 60 ft.
Jeffrey Bruce "Jeff" Skiles is an airline pilot for American Airlines. On January 15, 2009, he became known globally as first officer of US Airways Flight 1549, when he worked together with captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger to water land the aircraft on the Hudson River after the plane lost both of its engines. They were widely celebrated as heroes for landing the plane with no loss of life.
Chesley Burnett "Sully" Sullenberger III is an American retired fighter pilot, diplomat, and airline pilot. He is best known for his actions as captain of US Airways Flight 1549 on January 15, 2009, when he ditched the plane, landing on the Hudson River after both engines were disabled by a bird strike. All 155 people aboard survived. After the Hudson landing, Sullenberger became an outspoken advocate for aviation safety and helped develop new protocols for flight safety. He served as the co-chairman, along with his co-pilot on Flight 1549, Jeffrey Skiles, of the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA)'s Young Eagles youth introduction-to-aviation program from 2009 to 2013.

The 1994 South Pacific Airmotive DC-3 crash took place on 24 April 1994, when a Douglas DC-3 airliner operated by South Pacific Airmotive, tail number VH-EDC, ditched into Botany Bay shortly after takeoff from Sydney Airport in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. The cause of the crash was determined by the Bureau of Air Safety Investigation to have been a power loss in the aircraft's left engine caused by an inlet valve being stuck in the open position, compounded by inadequate action on the part of the pilots; Rod Lovell, the pilot in command of the flight, has disputed BASI's conclusions.
