Drowning in Fire is a novel by Craig Womack published in 2001 by The University of Arizona Press. The story follows a young queer person, Josh Henneha, coming of age in the Muscogee Creek Nation in Eufaula, Oklahoma. The novel is told across the 20th century through the perspectives of Josh and his great aunt Lucille Self. [1]

Plot

Drowning in Fire follows the life of Josh Henneha as he spends his childhood years within the Muscogee Creek Nation in rural Oklahoma, and it takes the reader through Josh's immersive dreams. Josh’s self-understanding is pulled between listening to his Christian parents or the stories of his elder Creek family members, such as his great-aunt Lucille Self. [2] Often seen as an outlier in his community, he is torn between the uncontrollable yearning he has for Jimmy Alexander and the shame he feels about his sexuality. [3] [1]

With the help of his Aunt Lucy’s passionate storytelling, Josh is able to fly through time and dive deeper into the history of his Creek roots. After witnessing his people’s history through his vivid dreams, Josh is able to create a better understanding of himself. The story continues into Josh’s adult years as he revisits his past home and desires. [1]

Gender and sexuality

Mark Rifkin argues that Drowning in Fire explores how a representation of queer experiences can highlight colonial impacts on the identity and expression of Muscogee people. [4] Rifkin states that the use of sexuality in the novel illuminates how "compulsory heterosexuality helps naturalize the foreclosure of forms of collective identity not sanctioned by U.S. Indian law and policy". [4] Rifkin also posits that the novel uses themes of homoeroticism regarding Creek people to emphasize how the legacy of allotment and the Dawes Act aligns with straightness. [4] Through the novel's challenges of heteronormativity and traditional gender roles, possibilities of self-representation, separate from the status quo, are also highlighted. [4] [1]

Josh and Jimmy are both queer characters that dominate Drowning in Fire. [1] In the novel, Josh has a hard time accepting his sexuality due to his treatment from other characters. [1] Josh is looked down on for not being traditionally masculine and is called gay as an insult; thus, resulting in insecurity in his sexuality. [5]

Race

In Drowning in Fire, Womack welcomes diversity within the Creek Nation by accepting Creek individuals who come from distinct racial backgrounds. [3] He emphasizes that Creek people are not a culturally homogenous group but rather a group of diverse backgrounds. [3] Through the novel, Womack posits that different backgrounds do not make their Creekness inauthentic; instead, it permits the emergence of fresh cultures without harming Creek culture. [3] In the novel, Womack demonstrates racial diversity through Jimmy’s character. [3] Visibly, others might label Jimmy as Black, but he identifies more with his Creek identity because of the community he grew up in. [3] Womack’s depiction of race shows how the intersection of different identities within Creek culture does not damage it because it is flexible. [3]

Religion

Drowning in Fire presents the complications of Christian ideologies within the Creek community, and the consequences they impose. [1] Mark Rifkin writes, “Drowning in Fire historicizes the dissemination of such Christian ideology among the Creeks, presenting it as enmeshed in detribalizing U.S. policy initiatives,” noting how the U.S. enforced Christian beliefs to practice social order. [4] In the novel, Josh begins to confront his feelings for Jimmy but his religious background influences him to not act on his desires. [1] Rifkin suggests that the shame associated with homosexuality present in Josh's internal monologue "is an imperial inheritance that both enacts and effaces the broader assault on Creek peoplehood." [1] [4]

Style

Polyvocal narration

Most of the story is told through Josh’s perspective as he learns to travel across time and space through his dreams. [2] [1] John Gamber notes the different perspectives offered by each character. [2] During Lucy's timeline, her story is told through flashbacks during her childhood years (in the early 1900s). [2] [1] Jimmy's perspective is offered only once during the novel. [1] Through Jimmy's narrative, the audience is able to witness a different perspective of Native identity. [3] However, instead of struggling to find a balance between his two cultures, Jimmy embraces both positions. [3]

Frame story

In the novel, Womack uses the frame story technique to provide context and structure to the narrative. Michelle Henry explains “From the very beginning, the narrative voice shifts back and forth from first to third person, and where one character begins a story, the main character, Josh, may enter and experience the story for himself…” [3] According to Henry, the “fluidity in storytelling” allows stories from different generations to intertwine and enhance each other. [3] Through this technique, Womack is able to explore how “the Creek oral tradition and history are unbound and brought to life through the shift from listener to storyteller.” [3]

Craig Womack is an author and professor of Native American literature. He self-identifies as being of Creek and Cherokee descent, but is not enrolled with any Native American tribe. Womack wrote the book Red on Red: Native American Literary Separatism, a book of literary criticism which argues that the dominant approach to academic study of Native American literature is incorrect. Instead of using poststructural and postcolonial approaches that do not have their basis in Native culture or experience, Womack claims the work of the Native critic should be to develop tribal models of criticism. In 2002, Craig won Wordcraft Circle Writer of the Year Winner. Along with Robert Allen Warrior, Jace Weaver and Greg Sarris, Womack asserted themselves as a nationalist, which is part of an activist movement. The movement significantly altered the critical methodologies used to approach Native American literature.

Welch received praise from such luminaries as Pulitzer Prize-winning Ojibwe author Louise Erdrich, celebrated American novelist Reynolds Price, and Coeur d'Alene author Sherman Alexie. Alexie later produced the film adaptation of the novel, which was released in 2012.

Alexander Lawrence Posey was an American poet, humorist, journalist, and politician in the Creek Nation. He founded the Eufaula Indian Journal in 1901, the first Native American daily newspaper. For several years he published editorial letters known as the Fus Fixico Letters, written by a fictional figure who commented pointedly about Muscogee Nation, Indian Territory, and United States politics during the period of the dissolution of tribal governments and communal lands. He served as secretary to the Sequoyah Constitutional Convention and drafted much of the constitution for its proposed Native American state, but Congress rejected the proposal. Posey died young, drowned while trying to cross the flooding North Canadian River in Oklahoma.

A Visitation of Spirits is a 1989 novel by Randall Kenan. The novel centers around the point of view of two related characters, Horace Cross, a gay black teenager from a fictional town in North Carolina, and Horace's cousin, Jimmy Greene, a minister with no true convictions who struggles to know God.

Cereus Blooms at Night (1996) is the first novel published by film-maker, artist, and writer Shani Mootoo. The novel recounts the story of an old lady named Mala Ramchandin through the narrative of Tyler, a nurse at Paradise Alms House. Although the setting of the novel is deliberately left ambiguous, it is thought to be patterned after the island of Trinidad, where Mootoo lived as a child. Cereus and other flora found throughout the novel, the creolized dialect spoken by the inhabitants of Lantanacamara, and the racial composition of its population are all suggestive of Caribbean society. Other possibilities would include Guyana, Suriname, and Mauritius, all of which have sizable Indian populations.

<i>Rolling the Rs</i> 1997 book by R. Zamora Linmark

Rolling the R's is a coming of age novel written by Filipino-American author R. Zamora Linmark and published in 1997. Rolling the R's, set in the 1970s in Hawaii, follows several adolescent Filipino characters as they grapple with the difficulties of fitting in as immigrants, discovering their sexualities, and deal with the social structure of in their community. The novel is written from a variety of perspectives, switching between main characters' perspectives in order to develop individual narratives. Linmark draws partially on his own experience as a Filipino-American immigrant to guide the plot. Linmark frequently references pop culture, demonstrating his characters' awareness of mainstream American culture. Narrated in Pidgin English, Linmark develops his characters across various settings including the home, school, and the streets of Hawaii. The story is told in non-linear progression, presenting the young, queer characters across settings to show how they all stray from typical depictions of pre-teen protagonists. Throughout the novel, Linmark shows how racism and ethnic prejudice, conflicts over language, social norms regarding sexuality outside of marriage, and prejudice against gay men and boys govern the lives of his young protagonists.

Current research indicates that autistic people have higher rates of LGBTQ identities and feelings than the general population. A variety of explanations for this have been proposed, such as prenatal hormonal exposure, which has been linked with sexual orientation, gender dysphoria and autism. Alternatively, autistic people may be less reliant on social norms and thus are more open about their orientation or gender identity.
