Woodard joined the United States Marine Corps serving in Japan and the Philippines. He was honorably discharged in 1959. Two years later,he moved to Fort Collins to become a Deputy District Attorney for the Eighth Judicial District. [2] In 1974,he became a municipal judge in Windsor. [3]
He was elected to the Colorado Senate in the 1976 general election. In March 1980,Governor Richard Lamm appointed Woodard to the Colorado Public Utilities Commission. Fellow Republican Roy Henry Shore succeeded Woodard in the Senate for a brief time before his own appointment to the University of Colorado Board of Regents. [3] [4] In 1982,Woodard defeated Democratic candidate Gail Klapper. [5] In 1987,Woodard switched from the Republican Party to Democratic Party citing the party's advocacy for austerity and personal conflicts with its members. [6] In the 1988 general election,Woodard headed Colorado Unity, one of two groups organized to oppose an English-only amendment to the Colorado Constitution. [7] Republican candidate Gale Norton defeated Woodard in the 1990 general election. The 1988 United States Senate elections were elections for the United States Senate. Held on November 8,the 33 seats of Class 1 were contested in regular elections. In spite of the Republican victory by George H. W. Bush in the presidential election, the Democrats gained a net of one seat in the Senate. Seven seats changed parties, with four incumbents being defeated. The Democratic majority in the Senate increased by one to 55–to–45.
The 1912–13 United States Senate elections were held on various dates in various states. They were the last U.S. Senate elections before the ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913,establishing direct elections for all Senate seats. Senators had been primarily chosen by state legislatures. Senators were elected over a wide range of time throughout 1912 and 1913,and a seat may have been filled months late or remained vacant due to legislative deadlock. Some states elected their senators directly even before passage of Seventeenth Amendment. Oregon pioneered direct election and experimented with different measures over several years until it succeeded in 1907. Soon after,Nebraska followed suit and laid the foundation for other states to adopt measures reflecting the people's will. By 1912,as many as 29 states elected senators either as nominees of their party's primary or in conjunction with a general election.
United States gubernatorial elections were held on November 5,2002,in 36 states and two territories. The politics of Colorado,United States, are that of a blue state. Once considered a swing state that used to be Republican-leaning,Colorado has been trending Democratic since the early part of the 21st century due to the organization of the state Democratic Party, changing demographics, and a rising number of the large unaffiliated bloc of voters leaning Democratic. The growing shift of the state's Republican Party towards social and religious conservatism along with shifting further to the right has also been cited as reasons for the changing voting patterns of Colorado.
The 2008 United States Senate special election in Wyoming took place on November 4,2008,at the same time as the regular election to the United States Senate in Wyoming. The special election occurred to complete the term of Republican incumbent Craig L. Thomas, who won reelection in 2006,but died in June 2007. Despite being a Democrat,Governor Dave Freudenthal was obliged by state law to appoint a Republican, and selected state senator John Barrasso, who was unopposed in the Republican primary and won the general election to fill the remainder of the term ending January 3,2013. This is the last time that both of Wyoming‘s U.S. Senate seats were concurrently up for election.
The 1900–01 United States Senate elections were held on various dates in various states, coinciding with President William McKinley's re-election as well as the 1900 House of Representatives elections. As these U.S. Senate elections were prior to the ratification of the Seventeenth Amendment in 1913,senators were chosen by state legislatures. Senators were elected over a wide range of time throughout 1900 and 1901,and a seat may have been filled months late or remained vacant due to legislative deadlock. In these elections, terms were up for the senators in Class 2.

The winners were elected to 6-year terms from January 3,2021,to January 3,2027. Two special elections for seats held by Republicans were also held in conjunction with the general elections:one in Arizona,to fill the vacancy created by John McCain's death in 2018;and one in Georgia, following Johnny Isakson's resignation in 2019. These elections ran concurrently with the 2020 United States presidential election in which incumbent president Donald Trump lost to Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
