1970–71

The club finished the Division One season in sixth place, missing out on European qualification by one place as rivals Dundee pipped them by two points. Aberdeen knocked United out of the Scottish Cup in the fourth round while the club failed to get past the League Cup first round. United were knocked out of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup in the second round by Czechoslovakian side TJ Sparta ČKD Praha.

Aberdeen Football Club is a Scottish professional football club based in Aberdeen, Scotland. They compete in the Scottish Premiership and have never been relegated from the top division of the Scottish football league system since they were promoted in 1905, despite twice finishing within the relegation zone. Aberdeen have won four Scottish league titles, seven Scottish Cups and six Scottish League Cups. Scottish Cup

The Scottish Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly known as the Scottish Cup, is an annual association football knock-out cup competition for men's football clubs in Scotland. The competition was first held in 1873–74. Entry is open to all 90 clubs with full membership of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), along with up to eight other clubs who are associate members. The competition is called the William Hill Scottish Cup for sponsorship reasons.

1971–72

The club finished the Division One season in ninth place, with Jim McLean beginning a 22-year managerial spell with the club in December 1971, taking over from Jerry Kerr. Aberdeen knocked United out of the Scottish Cup for the second year running, this time in the third round, while the club again failed to get past the League Cup first round. In the Texaco Cup, United were beaten 8–5 on aggregate by eventual winners Derby County in the first round. [2]

James Yuill McLean is a Scottish former football player, manager and director. He managed Dundee United between 1971 and 1993, becoming the longest-serving and most successful manager in the club's history, winning three major honours. He was also part-time assistant manager to Jock Stein with the Scotland national team for four years, including at the 1982 World Cup.

John 'Jerry' Kerr was a Scottish football player and manager, best known as manager of Dundee United from 1959 to 1971. He is credited with taking the club from third bottom of the Scottish League to being an established side in the Scottish top tier. He became the first manager of a British club to win a competitive game in Spain when United won home and away against F.C. Barcelona in the 1966-67 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup.

Texaco Cup

The Texaco Cup,, was an association football competition involving sides from England, Scotland and Ireland that had not qualified for European competitions.

1972–73

The club finished the Division One season in seventh place, in Jim McLean's first full season since taking over from Jerry Kerr. Rangers knocked United out of the Scottish Cup third round, while the club reached the League Cup second round. In the Texaco Cup, United were again beaten in the first round, this time on penalties by Leicester City after a 3–3 aggregate draw. [2]

1973–74

The club finished the Division One season in eighth place, again sandwiched between Ayr United and Motherwell. The club reached their first Scottish Cup Final this season, only to be beaten by Celtic. In the League Cup, the club failed to get past the first round while in the Texaco Cup, United were eliminated in the semi-finals after extra time by eventual winners Newcastle United. [2]

Ayr United F.C. association football club

Ayr United Football Club are a football club in Ayr, Scotland, that plays in the Scottish Championship, the second tier of the Scottish Professional Football League. Formed in 1910 by the merger of Ayr Parkhouse and Ayr F.C., their nickname is The Honest Men, from a line in the Robert Burns poem "Tam o' Shanter". They play at Somerset Park.

Motherwell F.C. association football club

Motherwell Football Club are a Scottish professional football club based in Motherwell, North Lanarkshire. The club compete in the Scottish Premiership. Motherwell have not dropped out of the top-flight of Scottish football since 1985, and have lifted one trophy in that time – the Scottish Cup in 1991.

Celtic F.C. association football club

The Celtic Football Club are a professional football club based in Glasgow, Scotland, which plays in the Scottish Premiership. The club was founded in 1887 with the purpose of alleviating poverty in the immigrant Irish population in the East End of Glasgow. They played their first match in May 1888, a friendly match against Rangers which Celtic won 5–2. Celtic established themselves within Scottish football, winning six successive league titles during the first decade of the 20th century. The club enjoyed their greatest successes during the 1960s and 70s under Jock Stein when they won nine consecutive league titles and the 1967 European Cup.

1974–75

The club finished the Division One season in fourth place, in the last season before the formation of the Premier Division. The club were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Aberdeen for the third time in five years, this time in the fourth round, while once again United failed to get past the League Cup first round. In the Cup Winners Cup, United were eliminated in the second round by Turkish side Bursaspor.

UEFA Cup Winners Cup former European association football tournament for clubs

The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was a football club competition contested annually by the most recent winners of all European domestic cup competitions. The cup was one of the many inter-European club competitions that have been organised by the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA). The first competition was held in the 1960–61 season — but not recognised by the governing body of European football until two years later. The final tournament was held in 1998–99, after which it was absorbed into the UEFA Cup.

Bursaspor association football club in Turkey

Bursaspor Kulübü Derneği, commonly known as Bursaspor, is a professional Turkish sports club located in the city of Bursa, Turkey. Formed in 1963, the club colours are green and white, with home kits usually featuring both colours in a striped pattern.

1975–76

The club finished the season in eighth place, in the first season of the new Premier Division, avoiding relegation on goal difference. The club were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Hibernian in the fourth round after a replay, while once again United failed to get past the League Cup first round. In the UEFA Cup, United were eliminated in the second round by Portuguese side Porto.

1977–78

The club finished the season in third place in the Premier Division. The club lost to Rangers in the Semi final, United also lost on penalties to Hearts after the sides drew over two legs in the Quarter Final stage. In the UEFA Cup, United were eliminated in the first round by Danish side Copenhagen.

1978–79

The club finished the season in third place, finishing just four points behind champions Celtic. The club were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by St Mirren in the third round, while Celtic knocked United out of the League Cup in the second round. In the UEFA Cup, United were narrowly eliminated in the first round by Belgian side Standard Liege.

1979–80

The club finished the season in fourth place, beating Rangers to a UEFA Cup place on goal difference. The club were knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Rangers in the fourth round, while the club became League Cup Winners for the first time defeating Aberdeen 3-0 in the Final replay at Dens Park after a goalless draw at Hampden. In the UEFA Cup, United were eliminated in the second round by Hungarian side Diósgyőri VTK.

The Anglo-Scottish Cup was a tournament arranged for teams in the English and Scottish football leagues during the summer for several years during the 1970s. It was created in 1975 as a new incarnation of the Texaco Cup, with a similar format to its predecessor, but involving clubs from England and Scotland only.

The 1995–96 Scottish Premier Division season was the second season involving a relegation playoff with the Scottish First Division. The season began on 26 August 1995.

Norwich City Football Club is an English football club based in Norwich, Norfolk. The club was founded in 1902 and has competed in the English football league system since 1920. Their first and so far only season in UEFA-sanctioned cup competition came when they reached the third round of the UEFA Cup in the 1993–94 season. They also took part in the Texaco Cup and the Anglo-Scottish Cup in the 1970s.

During the 1995–96 English football season, Brentford competed in the Football League Second Division. Despite spending over two months in the relegation places, the club achieved a mid-table finish in the league. A bright spot was a run to the fourth round of the FA Cup, falling to First Division high-flyers Charlton Athletic.

The 2008–09 season saw Kilmarnock compete in the Scottish Premier League where they finished in 8th position with 44 points.
