Dwight York is an American stand-up comedian and writer originally from Wisconsin.

York has released two albums on Stand Up! Records, most recently Belongs In a Bar. Both Laughspin and The Serious Comedy Site called his album Quickies one of the best comedy albums of 2009. [2] [3]

Early life

York was born in Amery, Wisconsin, and graduated from Amery High School in 1980. In contrast to the "drifter" persona he puts on when performing comedy, York has said his "family was normal, small-town, churchgoing. They're not crazy." [1] Before becoming a comedian, York worked at a Minnesota factory building windows on an assembly line. [4]

Career

Stand-up comedy

York performed at his first comedy open mic in Minneapolis in February 1989, after crafting his idiosyncratic performance style beforehand by studying other stand-up comics for nine months by going to shows every night, observing and taking notes. [5] [6] [4]

He is known for a comedic style that centers on a relentless barrage of finely honed, sometimes bizarre absurdist one-liners, delivered in character as a possibly psychopathic wild man, described by the Eau Claire Leader-Telegram as "drugged, crazed, and criminal." [1] [7] [8] [9] He has been compared with Steven Wright, Mitch Hedberg, George Carlin, Emo Philips, and Bobcat Goldthwait. [10] [11] [12] [13] [14] [15]

York has performed across the United States. [16] York finished in second place at the 1995 Vail National Comedy Invitational in Colorado. [4] He was a semifinalist at the San Francisco International Stand-Up Comedy Competition in 1996 and 1997. [17] [12] He was a semifinalist at the 2009 Great American Comedy Festival. [18] He finished second at the Laughlin Laugh Fest in Laughlin, Nevada in 2014. [19] He performs annually at the Buffalo Chip Campground during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, [20] [16] [21] and has performed at the Harley-Davidson 100th anniversary celebration in Milwaukee, [1] the Edinburgh Fringe, and Chicago Comedy Festival. He became a frequent guest on nationally syndicated radio program The Bob & Tom Show , and appears on their 2000 compilation CD You Guys Rock. [10] [12] [13] Colin Quinn has called him his favorite underrated comedian. [19]

Albums

York has released two albums on Stand Up! Records.

Belongs In a Bar was recorded live in River Falls, Wisconsin. [22] It was first released as a video in 2018, and later as an audio album in 2021. Reviewer Richard Lanoie of The Serious Comedy Site called the album "brilliant", with jokes that "line up like dominoes." [23]

2009's Quickies was recorded live in Appleton, Wisconsin, [13] and features cover art by MAD magazine cartoonist Mort Drucker. [24] Minneapolis newspaper City Pages called it "as densely packed with jokes as a disc can get." [21] Lanoie of The Serious Comedy Site named Quickies one of his top 10 comedy alums of 2009, [3] as did John Celery of Laughspin, who called York "as inventive as he is suggestive". [2] Jake Austen of Roctober magazine called York's "maximum laughs-per-minute" approach "comedy gold." [25]

Other work

York has written several books. The Vile File: Jokes Too Sick For the Stage [1] [4] and its followup More from the Vile File: 500 Sick Jokes compile one-liners from across his career as a comedian. [26]

He also published a semi-autobiographical comic novel in 2019, What Luck, about a stand-up comedian wrestling with the difficulties of finding a "lucky break". [27]

Stand-up comedy is a comedy performance and narrative craft whereby a comedian communicates to a live audience, speaking directly to them through a microphone. The performer is commonly known as a comic, stand-up comic, comedian, comedienne, stand-up comedian, or simply a stand-up. Stand-up comedy is a dialogic monologue, or a grouping of humorous stories, jokes, and one-liners, typically called a shtick, routine, act, or set. Stand Up! Records American comedy record label based in Minneapolis

Stand Up! Records is an American independent comedy record label founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by Grammy-winning producer Dan Schlissel. It has been called "the country's most respected indie comedy label." Stand Up! has released more than 200 comedy albums and videos since its founding in 2000, including albums by Lewis Black, Patton Oswalt, Greg Proops, David Cross, Maria Bamford, Hannibal Buress, Judy Gold, the Sklar Brothers, and Eddie Pepitone. Comedian and actor Marc Maron, who released his first three albums on Stand Up!, described Schlissel as "a guy who loves comedy, and is very attentive to the process of recording comedy," and, referencing the large number of noteworthy comics who were given important exposure in their early careers by the label, joked that "you've done everybody's first two records."

Fancy Ray American stand-up comedian

Fancy Ray McCloney is a stand-up comedian and advertising pitchman from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is known for his flamboyant comic persona, once described as "gleefully narcissistic," blending elements of Little Richard, Muhammad Ali, James Brown, Prince, and a tent-revival preacher. He is known for producing and starring in low-budget TV ads for local businesses in the Twin Cities and markets across the U.S., including a Taco Bell ad aired during the 2016 Super Bowl that played off his status as a "local legend." Rarely breaking character on stage or off, Fancy Ray is a buoyantly self-aggrandizing, larger-than-life personality given to spontaneous poetry and mock-boastful proclamations including his oft-repeated characteristic catchphrase "I'm the best-lookin’ man in comedy."

Tim Harmston is a stand-up comedian from Minneapolis. He competed on Last Comic Standing in 2014, and has performed on The Late Show With David Letterman and Comedy Central's Live at Gotham. Star Tribune critic Jay Boller wrote that Harmston combines "the cadence of Brian Regan and the observational absurdism of Jim Gaffigan." He has released two albums on Stand Up! Records, The Most Bees Ever and The Whim of Tim.

-ismist Recordings American record label founded in Nebraska

-ismist Recordings was a Lincoln, Nebraska-based independent record label founded in 1992 by Dan Schlissel. Over the 1990s, -ismist released nearly 80 albums and singles by bands including Killdozer, Season to Risk, and House of Large Sizes. It is most widely known for comedy albums by Lewis Black and Doug Stanhope, as well as Iowa metal band Slipknot's 1997 debut/demo, Mate.Feed.Kill.Repeat. By the early 2000s, after Slipknot had moved on to major label Roadrunner Records and Schlissel had found greater success with comedians like Black and Stanhope than with indie rock, he changed his focus to comedy albums on a new, Minneapolis-based label, Stand Up! Records, which eventually replaced -ismist entirely.

Mary Mack is an American comedian, musician, and writer. Mack currently stars as Jesse in the Justin Roiland-produced animated sitcom Solar Opposites, which debuted May 8, 2020 on Hulu. She has released five albums of her stand-up.

Kathleen McGee is a Canadian stand-up comedian from Edmonton, Alberta. Her performance at the Winnipeg Comedy Festival was nominated for a 2019 Canadian Comedy Award. Her debut full-length album, 2019's Deliciously Vulgar, was produced by Grammy winner Dan Schlissel for his label Stand Up! Records.

Chris Maddock is an American stand-up comedian from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has released two albums and a DVD on Dan Schlissel's Stand Up! Records, most recently 2020's Country Music Legend, which reached No. 5 on the iTunes comedy chart.

Ryan Patrick Cownie is an American stand-up comedian originally from Lincoln, Nebraska. His album I Can't Die, which includes a theme song by Riverboat Gamblers' Mike Wiebe, was released by Dan Schlissel's Stand Up! Records in 2019. Comedy site Laughspin called him "a future superstar."

Corey Adam is an American stand-up comedian from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has released three comedy albums on Stand Up! Records, including 2018's Jokes, which reached No.1 on the iTunes comedy chart.

Daniel Lobell is a Los Angeles-based American stand-up comedian, podcaster, and comic-book writer best known for his podcast Modern Day Philosophers. Comedian Marc Maron credits him with creating the first podcast focused on stand-up comedy, Comical Radio.

Doug Mellard is a Los Angeles-based American stand-up comedian originally from Texas. He is known for his appearances on Last Comic Standing, Live at Gotham, and his work with comedian Doug Benson. The Austin American-Statesman called him "a high-energy crowd destroyer."

Chris Knutson is an American stand-up comedian from Minneapolis, Minnesota. He is known for his work as half of the comedy-rap duo Valley Meadows. Patrick Strait of City Pages said that "Knutson has established himself as one of the most consistently funny performers" in the Midwest.
