Dziady (plural, lit. "old men, beggars"; singular: dziad), also dziady proszalne ("begging dziady") or dziad kalwaryjski ("calvarian dziad") was a term commonly used in many regions of Poland (as well as in other Slavic countries) to refer to nomadic beggars. Calling beggars dziady was associated with the idea that they have mediumship skills, are a kind of link with the "other world" and representatives of the dead (dziady-ancestors).
In traditional itinerant rural communities, dziady performed important social functions. They were not perceived and treated as "ordinary" beggars, but as intermediaries between the world of the living and the dead. Thanks to them, it was possible to establish contact with the ancestors and fulfill the duties imposed on them by tradition (e.g. feed them). It was also believed that the prayer of dziady had a special power, therefore, especially during the periods of All Souls' Day (dziady), they were asked to remember the souls of their ancestors, rewarded with food or financial donations. In some areas, dziady also played an important role in funeral rituals – they were hired to "guard" the corpse of the deceased or invited to a special kind of wake (the so-called "dziad's dinner"). Dziady were also very often singers. They performed various songs in public places (especially next to churches), mainly on religious themes and moralizing colors (e.g., about saints, miraculous revelations, the end of the world, death, the fall of customs), which are commonly referred to as "dziady's songs". [2] In the eastern territories, a similar repertoire was performed with the accompaniment of the hurdy-gurdy by Ukrainian and Belarusian lirnyks, who were often also called dziady, although despite some similarities, they essentially formed a separate group with a specific, different culture and methods of operation. In the settled and not very mobile former rural communities, itinerant dziad was also one of the few sources of information about the world. He brought news from closer and further afield, told about sacred places, about life in other parts of the world, and about various unusual events (e.g. apparitions, wars, cataclysms, murders, etc.). Some of dziady were also sometimes involved in small trade, selling mainly different kinds of devotional goods, although they should not be confused with wandering stalls, which formed a separate group trading in fairs and indulgences with different kinds of goods. Dziady came mainly from rural communities, from among people who for various reasons (illness, old age, lack of work) could not work on the land and in the "dziady's craft" they sought a source of income. Sometimes, however, there were also people with a certain education among them, whose various life paths (participation in wars, loss of property, conflicts with the law) forced them to undertake such activities. The position of dziady in traditional rural communities was generally very high. On the one hand, they were respected as pilgrims, "God's wanderers," almost holy people with a broad knowledge of "this" and "that" world. For this reason, they were expected to arrive, were willingly accepted into people's homes and were generously donated. On the other hand, it was feared that the offended dziad might be dangerous and, for example, cast a curse on a host that was not very hospitable. Therefore, in the past, there was a common belief that wandering dziady could not be refused support. [2]
In urban and modern communities dziady were very often treated as fraudsters who, under the "cloak of misery", were looking for an easy income, in various, often sophisticated ways, using human naivety. They were accused of various types of deception (mainly simulation of disability), of evil deceit (theft, robbery, witchcraft), and of having a well-organized corporate activity (dziady's guilds, dziady kings), and of being rich. The World War II and the social and political changes it brought about put an end to the activity of itinerant dziady. With the gradual disintegration of traditional folk culture and the technical and world-view changes brought about by modernization, dziady ceased to be seen as representatives of the world of the dead or singers and providers of news, and thus ceased to perform important social functions. In addition, the socialist system introduced in Poland assumed a planned liquidation of the "begging procedure", which significantly hindered the lives of the last representatives of this profession. The figure of a wandering dziad-beggar was a frequent literary motif. Already in the old Polish period, the first satirical dialogues depicting the environment of dziad in a parodistic way appeared (Peregrynacja dziadowska, Tragedia żebracza). In later periods, there are many works in which itinerant beggars play a greater or lesser role; the best-known include the novels by Józef Dzierzkowski (Król dziadów), Ignacy Kraszewski (Zygmuntowskie czasy), Edward Redliński (Konopielka) and Tadeusz Nowak (Wniebogłosy).
Trick-or-treating is a traditional Halloween custom for children and adults in some countries. In the evening before All Saints' Day, children in costumes travel from house to house, asking for treats with the phrase "Trick or treat". The "treat" is usually some form of candy, although in some cultures money is given instead. The "trick" refers to a threat, usually idle, to perform mischief on the homeowner(s) or their property if no treat is given. Trick-or-treating usually occurs on the evening of October 31. Some homeowners signal that they are willing to hand out treats by putting up Halloween decorations outside their doors; others simply leave treats available on their porches for the children to take freely. Houses may also leave their porch light on as a universal indicator that they have candy.
The veneration of the dead, including one's ancestors, is based on love and respect for the deceased. In some cultures, it is related to beliefs that the dead have a continued existence, and may possess the ability to influence the fortune of the living. Some groups venerate their direct, familial ancestors. Certain sects and religions, in particular the Eastern Orthodox Church and Roman Catholic Church, venerate saints as intercessors with God; the latter also believes in prayer for departed souls in Purgatory. Other religious groups, however, consider veneration of the dead to be idolatry and a sin.
A nomad is a member of a community without fixed habitation which regularly moves to and from the same areas. Such groups include hunter-gatherers, pastoral nomads, and tinkers or trader nomads. In the twentieth century, population of nomadic pastoral tribes slowly decreased, reaching to an estimated 30–40 million nomads in the world as of 1995.
A mendicant is one who practices mendicancy and relies chiefly or exclusively on alms to survive. In principle, mendicant religious orders own little property, either individually or collectively, and in many instances members have taken a vow of poverty, in order that all their time and energy could be expended on practicing their respective faith, preaching and serving society.
Dziady is a term in Slavic folklore for the spirits of the ancestors and a collection of pre-Christian rites, rituals and customs that were dedicated to them. The essence of these rituals was the "communion of the living with the dead", namely, the establishment of relationships with the souls of the ancestors, periodically returning to their headquarters from the times of their lives. The aim of the ritual activities was to win the favor of the deceased, who were considered to be caretakers in the sphere of fertility. The name "dziady" was used in particular dialects mainly in Belarus, Polesia, Russia and Ukraine, but under different other names there were very similar ritual practices, common among Slavs and Balts, and also in many European and even non-European cultures.
Dziady is a poetic drama by the Polish poet Adam Mickiewicz. It is considered one of the greatest works of both Polish and European Romanticism. To George Sand and Georg Brandes, Dziady was a supreme realization of Romantic drama theory, to be ranked with such works as Goethe's Faust and Byron's Manfred.
Begging is the practice of imploring others to grant a favor, often a gift of money, with little or no expectation of reciprocation. A person doing such is called a beggar or panhandler. Beggars may operate in public places such as transport routes, urban parks, and markets. Besides money, they may also ask for food, drink, cigarettes or other small items.
The Abraham-men were a class of beggars claiming to be lunatics allowed out of restraint, in the Tudor and Stuart periods in England.
The Jangam or Jangama are a Shaiva order of wandering religious monks. They are the priests or gurus of the Hindu Shaiva sect. Jangamas are also gurus of Vira Shaiva' sect. Jangamas are disciples of Lord Shiva as mentioned in Basava Puranas. A visit of a jangam to a house is treated as the visit of Lord Shiva himself and the jangam shall be given good alms and the jangam blesses the natives. The Jangam is the wandering holy man in Virashaivism. The meaning of word Jangam is 'moving linga' and considered superioir to 'sthira linga'.
Christianity is the largest religion in Ghana, with approximately 71.2% of Ghana's population being member of various Christian denominations as of 2010 census. The religious composition of Ghana in the first postindependence population census of 1960 was 25 percent Muslim, 23 percent traditionalist, 41 percent Christian, and the rest other. A breakdown of the 1960 population according to Christian sects showed that 25 percent were Protestant (non-Pentecostal); 13 percent, Roman Catholic; 2 percent, Protestant (Pentecostal); and 1 percent, Independent African Churches. The 1970 population census did not present figures on the religious composition of the nation.
Vagrancy is the condition of homelessness without regular employment or income. Vagrants usually live in poverty and support themselves by begging, garbage scraping, petty theft, temporary work, or welfare.
Chinese ancestor worship or Chinese ancestor veneration, also called the Chinese patriarchal religion, is an aspect of the Chinese traditional religion which revolves around the ritual celebration of the deified ancestors and tutelary deities of people with the same surname organised into lineage societies in ancestral shrines. Ancestors, their ghosts, or spirits, and gods are considered part of "this world", that is, they are neither supernatural nor transcendent in the sense of being beyond nature. The ancestors are humans who have become godly beings, beings who keep their individual identities. For this reason, Chinese religion is founded on veneration of ancestors. Ancestors are believed to be a means of connection to the supreme power of Tian as they are considered embodiments or reproducers of the creative order of Heaven.
The Marasi are the genealogists and traditional singers and dancers of a number of communities. The word " mirasi" is derived from the Arabic word (ميراث) miras, which means inheritance or sometimes heritage.
The Ryukyuan religion (琉球信仰), Ryukyu Shintō (琉球神道), Nirai Kanai Shinkō (ニライカナイ信仰), or Utaki Shinkō (御嶽信仰) is the indigenous belief system of the Ryukyu Islands. While specific legends and traditions may vary slightly from place to place and island to island, the Ryukyuan religion is generally characterized by ancestor worship and the respecting of relationships between the living, the dead, and the gods and spirits of the natural world. Some of its beliefs, such as those concerning genius loci spirits and many other beings classified between gods and humans, are indicative of its ancient animistic roots, as is its concern with mabui (まぶい), or life essence.
The Qalandar are a Muslim ethnic group, found in North India and Pakistan. They are also known as Qalander Faqir. A few Qalandar are also found in the Terai region of Nepal.
The Abdal are a Muslim community found in North India. They are a sub-group within the Arabic old shekh community. They are related to the Abdal of Turkey, because some of them went to Iran in Khorasan, from there some went to Central Anatolia with the Seljuq dynasty.
Bahānds are the traditional folk entertainers of India, Bangladesh, and Nepal. In India and Nepal, the Bahand are now an endogamous Muslim community, which is no longer involved in their traditional occupation of folk entertainment. They include actors, dancers, minstrels, storytellers and impressionists.
Bhikshatana or Bhikshatana-murti is an aspect of the Hindu god Shiva as the "Supreme mendicant" or the "Supreme Beggar". Bhikshtana is depicted as a nude four-armed man adorned with ornaments who holds a begging bowl in his hand and is followed by demonic attendants and love-sick women.
The Misings are an indigenous community inhabiting parts of the Indian states of Assam and Arunachal Pradesh. They were also known as Miris in the past and still recognized as Miris in the Constitution of India. Miri is the older name and traces back to the ancestor Abotani. Misings are recognised as a Scheduled Tribe by the Indian government under the name 'Miri'. Their language, Mising, is part of the Sino-Tibetan family.
Yup'ik dance or Yuraq, also Yuraqing is a traditional Inuit style dancing form usually performed to songs in Yup'ik, with dances choreographed for specific songs which the Yup'ik people of southwestern Alaska. Also known as Cup'ik dance for the Chevak Cup'ik dialect speaking Inuit of Chevak and Cup'ig dance for the Nunivak Cup'ig dialect speaking Inuit of Nunivak Island. Yup'ik dancing is set up in a very specific and cultural format. Typically, the men are in the front, kneeling and the women stand in the back. The drummers are in the very back of the dance group. Dance is the heart of Yup’ik spiritual and social life. Traditional dancing in the qasgiq is a communal activity in Yup’ik tradition. The mask (kegginaquq) was a central element in Yup'ik ceremonial dancing.
