Edirisinghe Trust Investments Finance Limited also popularly known as ETI Finance is a Sri Lankan private limited company as well as a non banking financial institution which worked as a licensed finance company accepting deposits from general public. The company's business was primarily based on lending money on gold securities. On 13 July 2020, Central Bank of Sri Lanka decided to cancel the license of the company due to insufficient capital and financial problems regarding repaying depositors' money on demand as well as before maturity. Corporate history

The company was founded by veteran entrepreneur E. A. P. Edirisinghe in 1967 initially as a pawning business registered under the Finance Companies Act no 78 of 1988. [3] The company later expanded its business activities such as accepting deposits, leasing etc. ETI Finance is a core company of popular family controlled entity EAP Holdings. [4] The company was regarded as a leading financial institution in Sri Lanka for decades and the reputation of the business started to make downfall soon after the death of E. A. P. Edirisinghe. [5] [6] Soma Edirisinghe, wife of EAP Edirisinghe took over the company and remained as the chairperson of the company until her death in 2015.

ETI Finance failed to maintain required liquidity position since 2011. The company was accused of not honouring the depositors request of money withdrawals since 2011. [7] The company was issued its first official warning in February 2013 by the Fitch Ratings Lanka for not maintaining the required Statutory Liquid Asset Ratio threshold and downgraded the company's position from BB (lka) to CC (lka). [8]

In 2018, the CBSL warned of temporary regulatory actions against the company under the provisions of Finance Business Act no 42 of 2011 for failing to maintain adequate liquidity position and for failing to pay depositors money and CBSL vehemently took over the ETI Finance with immediate effect. [9] [10] As of 2020, the company defaulted the sum of 20 billion rupees of around 2500 depositors. [11]

In June 2020, the Colombo Magistrate Court issued arrest warrants against the directors of the company with regard to failing to appear on a due court case. [12] [13]

On 13 July 2020, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka officially suspended the licenses of ETI Finance and its subsidiary company Swarnamahal Financial Services following the decision reached during a meeting held by the Monetary Board of CBSL on 10 July 2020. [14] [15]

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Ajith Cabraal</span> Sri Lankan account and former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (born 1954)

Ajith Nivard Cabraal is a Sri Lankan accountant and politician who was also the 16th Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. He is also the former State Minister of Finance, Capital Markets and State Enterprise Reforms and a national list member of parliament since 12 August 2020. He served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, holding the post from 1 July 2006 until his resignation on 9 January 2015. He again became the Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka in September 2021, replacing W. D. Lakshman, and resigned again in April 2022.

Soma Edirisinghe was a Sri Lankan corporate executive, film producer, philanthropist and social worker. She was born in Meegoda, Sri Lanka on 5 July 1939 to a family of nine daughters, and died on 5 November 2015 at a private hospital in Colombo. She was married to EAP Edirisinghe and they had four children: three sons, Jeewaka, Nalaka and Asanka, and a daughter, Deepa.

He is a former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), having been appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena in January 2015 and served until the end of his term on 30 June 2016. Central Finance Company PLC is one of the oldest non-bank financial institutions (NBFIs) in Sri Lanka having founded in 1957. The company is listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1969. L B Finance PLC sometimes spelt LB Finance, is a Sri Lankan non-bank financial institution. The company is incorporated in 1971 and initially, the majority of shares were held by Lewis Brown & Company. The company was listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 1997. In 2003, Dhammika Perera acquired the company and became a subsidiary of Vallibel One. Currently, the company is one of the components of the S&P Sri Lanka 20 Index. Brand Finance ranked the company 24th in the 100 most valuable brands in Sri Lanka. The company placed 39th in the LMD 100 for the financial year 2019/20.

People's Leasing & Finance PLC, sometimes called People's Leasing Company or commonly abbreviated PLC, is a licensed non-banking financial company in Sri Lanka. The company is ranked 30th in LMD 100, an annual list of leading listed companies in Sri Lanka. Brand Finance placed the company 21st amongst the 100 most valuable brands in Sri Lanka. The company was incorporated in 1995 and in 2010 listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange. 75% of the shares of the company is held by the People's Bank, one of the two government-held banks of Sri Lanka.

P. Nandalal Weerasinghe is a Sri Lankan economist and banker who is also currently serving as the 17th Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. A career officer in the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, serving as its chief economist and senior deputy governor. He has also served as an alternative executive director at the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC representing the countries such as Sri Lanka, Bhutan, India and Bangladesh from January 2010 to August 2012. He has also previously acted as a chairman of the monetary policy committee and foreign reserve management committee of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka declared the country was suspending payment on most foreign debt from April 12, 2022, kindling the Indian Ocean island's first sovereign default event and ending an unblemished record of repaying external debt despite experiencing milder currency crises in the past. By April Sri Lanka was suffering the worst monetary crisis in its history with a steeply falling rupee, high inflation and forex shortages which triggered shortfalls of fuel, power and medicine. Widespread public protests led to a political crisis. In March, the International Monetary Fund released a report saying publicly for the first time that the country's debt was unsustainable and required re-structuring. Authorities had advertised for financial and legal advisors to help negotiate with creditors shortly before the suspension was announced.

The Housing Development Finance Corporation Bank of Sri Lanka PLC, commonly abbreviated as HDFC Bank of Sri Lanka PLC, is a specialised housing bank in Sri Lanka. The bank commenced operations in 1984 as a building society. Through successive acts in the Parliament of Sri Lanka over the years, the bank transformed into a state-owned enterprise, then a specialised bank and a listed company on the Colombo Stock Exchange in 2005. The bank ranked 78th in the 2020/21 edition. Brand Finance calculated the brand value of HDFC Bank to be LKR763 million in 2022. Due to the effects of the Sri Lankan economic crisis, Fitch Ratings placed the bank along with twelve other Sri Lankan banks on Rating Watch Negative.

The Golden Key Credit Card Company (GKCCC) was a leading Sri Lankan financial institution specializing in credit card services, and a subsidiary of the Ceylinco Consolidated. Founded on June 3, 1977, it was a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Ceylinco Group, an extensive conglomerate with more than 300 subsidiaries. GKCCC played a pioneering role in establishing the credit card industry in Sri Lanka in the early 1980s. Notably, it was responsible for setting up the initial Merchant Network utilized by all credit card companies in the country.

Bimputh Finance PLC was a Sri Lankan public limited company and functioned as a licensed finance company. It was a listed company in the Colombo Stock Exchange from 2012 to 2023. In September 2023, the Central Bank of Sri Lanka cancelled the operating license of the company due to the breach of regulatory requirements.
