Sri Lanka Savings Bank Limited is a Sri Lankan licensed specialised bank. [1] It is the subsidiary of the parent organisation National Savings Bank.

Corporate history

The Sri Lanka Savings Bank was established in July 2006 as a private limited company under the Banking Act No. 30 of 1988 and it was incorporated under the provisions of the Companies Act. [2] The bank obtained license to operate as a specialised bank from the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.

In October 2019, the National Savings Bank confirmed that it has officially taken over the Sri Lanka Savings Bank as a fully-owned subsidiary. [3] In March 2021, the ICRA Lanka Limited reaffirmed the credit rating of Sri Lanka Savings Bank to BBB− with immediate effect. [4]

Sri Lanka Savings Bank generated a Profit After Tax amounting to Rs. 445 million for the financial year ending 31 December 2022 and the bank recorded a significant increase in Profit After Tax by 74 percent from the previous financial year. [5] The bank reported a Profit After Tax of Rs. 255 million for the financial year ending 31 December 2021.

In 2023, Dushayanta Basnayake was appointed as the chairman of the Sri Lanka Savings Bank. [6] In 2023, according to a report by the Daily FT , Sarvodaya Development Finance had reportedly expressed its keen interest in acquiring Sri Lanka Savings Bank, as the latter was deemed to be struggling with operational inefficiencies and financial instability. [7] However, the reports about the potential acquisition of Sri Lanka Savings Bank by Sarvodaya Development Finance were brushed off by the Sri Lankan Savings Bank in response to the Daily FT article. [8]

People's Bank received a high national long-Term Rating of AA+ by Fitch Rating. People's Bank most awarded state-owned company such as "Green Plus" "Carbon Conscious Award". People's Bank became Sri Lanka's best performing bank. Bank mainly targets small and medium enterprise. India has extended multiple credit lines and currency support to Sri Lanka, aligning with its policy of prioritizing neighboring nations and fostering strong relationships as a friendly neighboring country.

Ajith Nivard Cabraal is a Sri Lankan accountant and politician who was also the 16th Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka. He is also the former State Minister of Finance, Capital Markets and State Enterprise Reforms and a national list member of parliament since 12 August 2020. He served as the Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, holding the post from 1 July 2006 until his resignation on 9 January 2015. He again became the Governor of Central Bank of Sri Lanka in September 2021, replacing W. D. Lakshman, and resigned again in April 2022.

The Sri Lankan government has been successful in reducing poverty from 15.2% on 2006 to 8.9% in 2010, urban poverty was reduced from 6.7 to 5.3% while rural poverty was reduced from 15.7 to 9.5%, and the nation has made significant progress towards achieving Millennium Development Goals on eradicating extreme poverty and hunger.

Kulappu Arachchige Don Dhammika Perera, commonly known as Dhammika Perera, is a Sri Lankan billionaire businessman and politician. A top corporate raider, he is one of the wealthiest people in Sri Lanka, controlling 23 listed companies on the Colombo Stocke Exchange. Perera owns a controlling stake in the conglomerates Hayleys and Vallibel One, a company he founded. Through Hayleys, Perera controls Amaya Leisure, The Kingsbury and Singer while Royal Ceramics, LB Finance, and Lanka Tiles are controlled by Vallibel One. Perera has been closely linked to the former President Mahinda Rajapaksa, having served as chairman of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka from 2007 to 2010 and Transport Secretary from 2011 to 2015. He was appointed a Member of Parliament in the National List in June 2022, succeeding Basil Rajapaksa from the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna, briefly serving President Gotabaya Rajapaksa as his Minister of Investment Promotion from June to July 2022.

Ranee Jayamaha also spelt as Rani Jayamaha is a Sri Lankan economist, author and banker. She served as the chairperson of Hatton National Bank from 2011 to 2015. In addition, she is currently an advisor to the President of Sri Lanka in Banking and a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (2004–2009). Lakshman Arjuna Mahendran is a Sri Lankan-born Singaporean economist and banker. He is a former Governor of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL), having been appointed by President Maithripala Sirisena in January 2015 and served until the end of his term in 30 June 2016. He was the former Managing Director of HSBC Private Bank, Chief Investment Officer of Emirates NBD as well as Chairman and Director-General of the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka. Mahendran is currently residing in Singapore, which has refused to extradite him on a request from Sri Lanka routed through interpol.

Union Bank of Colombo PLC, commonly referred to as UBC, is a commercial bank in Sri Lanka. It is licensed by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka, the central bank and national banking regulator.

Citizens Development Business Finance PLC also abbreviated as CDB PLC or CDBF PLC is a Sri Lankan listed public limited company which works as a licensed finance company accepting deposits from general public. It is one of the leading finance companies in Sri Lanka and it is also ranked within the top five largest licensed financial institutions among the 46 non banking institutions in the country. He served as the Chairman of the Public Utilities Commission of Sri Lanka from 2021 until he was ousted in 2023. Edirisinghe Trust Investments Finance Limited also popularly known as ETI Finance is a Sri Lankan private limited company as well as a non banking financial institution which worked as a licensed finance company accepting deposits from general public. The company's business was primarily based on lending money on gold securities. On 13 July 2020, Central Bank of Sri Lanka decided to cancel the license of the company due to insufficient capital and financial problems regarding repaying depositors' money on demand as well as before maturity.

LOLC Finance PLC is a non-banking financial company based in Sri Lanka. LOLC Holdings is the ultimate parent company of LOLC Finance. The company was founded as LOLC Finance Company Limited in 2001. In 2003, the company changed its name to Lanka ORIX Finance Company and commenced operations. Lanka ORIX Finance Company became a public company in 2011 with its listing on the Colombo Stock Exchange. The company adopted its current name in 2015. Sarvodaya Development Finance PLC is a Sri Lankan public limited company and functions as a licensed finance company. It is a listed company in the Colombo Stock Exchange. It is considered as the first development finance company in Sri Lanka. It is also the financial services provider of the Sarvodaya Movement.
