Earl of Eldon was launched at Whitby in 1830 but registered in London. Her master was Captain E. Theaker and her owner was J. Barry. She first appeared in Lloyd's Register in 1830; in 1831 her trade was London-India. [2] Spontaneous combustion that occurred in the cargo resulted in her destruction in 1834 in the Indian Ocean about 1,000 nautical miles (1,900 km; 1,200 mi) from Rodrigues Island at 10°S77°E / 10°S 77°E .
Earl of Eldon departed Bombay on 24 August 1834, bound for London with many passengers and a cargo of cotton. Her cargo had been loaded into the ship's hold in a damp condition. What one passenger some time later believed was steam billowing from the hold turned out to be smoke. Within the hour, the deck was ablaze and by mid-afternoon, the entire vessel was in flames. Forty-five men, women and children and the crew took to three ship's boats to make their escape. After they had rowed for an hour, Earl of Eldon's powder-magazine exploded, causing the ship to disintegrate spectacularly.
On 10 October, after 13 days and a voyage of 450 miles at sea in open boats, all 45, including four women and an infant, arrived safely at Rodrigues. [3] [1] [4] [5] Lloyd's List reported on 20 January 1835 that Earl of Eldon had burnt at sea.
Edward Lombe was a merchantman and passenger three-masted barque built in 1828 by Thomas Brodrick, of Whitby, England.
HMS Scourge was the former merchant sloop Herald, launched in 1799, that the Admiralty purchased in 1803 for service as a convoy escort. The Admiralty had her laid up in 1805, and sold in 1816. Subsequent owners returned her to mercantile service and she sailed until 1835 when she was lost.
Captain Cook was a merchant ship built at Whitby, England, in 1826. She made one voyage to Bombay under a license from the British East India Company (EIC) in 1828. She then made three voyages transporting convicts from Ireland and England to Australia. In August 1843 she was wrecked on her way with a cargo of coal from Shields to Aden.
Culland's Grove was a merchant ship launched in 1802 that the British East India Company (EIC) hired as an "extra ship". On her maiden voyage she sailed to Bengal and Benkulen. The French privateer Blonde captured her on her return voyage.
Mariner was launched at Whitby in 1807, and registered in London. Her notability comes from her having made three voyages transporting convicts to New South Wales between 1816 and 1827. She continued trading until 1857.
Camden was built at Whitby in 1813. She served as a general trader for much of her career, though in 1820-21 she made one voyage to Bombay for the British East India Company (EIC). Between 1824 and 1831, Camden sailed under charter to the Hudson's Bay Company. Between 1833 and 1837 she was a Greenland whaler out of the Whitby whale fishery, and was the last vessel from Whitby to engage in whaling. She was last listed in Lloyd's Register in 1850.
Timandra was launched in 1822. She sailed to India and South East Asia under a license from the British East India Company (EIC) before she disappeared in 1829.
Vittoria was launched at Whitby in 1813 as a transport. She transported migrants and troops to Canada. A new owner shifted her registration to London in December 1817. The new owner then employed her in trading with India under a license from the British East India Company. She was condemned at Calcutta and sold for breaking up in October 1820.
Hyperion was launched at Whitby in 1810. She traded with Canada and the Baltic but then sailed to India in 1817. After her return she traded with the Baltic and was lost there in 1823.
Sylph was launched at Whitby in 1791. She made one voyage for the British East India Company (EIC) to New South Wales and China. However, a French privateer captured her in 1798 as she was returning to England.
Competitor was launched at Whitby in 1813. She was initially a West Indiaman and then traded with India. She made two voyages transporting convicts to Australia, one to Van Diemen's Land and one to Port Jackson. She is last listed in 1833.
Paragon was launched at Whitby in 1800. Between 1803 and 1805 she served as an armed defense ship protecting Britain's coasts and convoys. She then served as a transport on the 1805 naval expedition to capture the Cape of Good Hope. Next, she returned to mercantile service and in 1814 a French privateer captured her, but the British Royal Navy recaptured her the next day. She sailed to India in 1818 under a license from the British East India Company (EIC), and was wrecked in March 1819 while inbound to Calcutta.
Lord Wellington was launched in 1811 at Whitby as a London-based transport. She made one voyage to India c. 1816. In 1821 she made one voyage carrying Swiss settlers to Hudson's Bay. She sank in May 1823 after striking an iceberg in the North Atlantic.
Stakesby was launched at Whitby in 1814. She carried immigrants to Quebec, traded with Batavia and Bombay, transported convicts to Van Diemen's Land, and made a voyage to Calcutta for the British East India Company (EIC). She disappeared in 1846 on a voyage from London to Quebec.
Medusa was launched at Whitby in 1813. She spent a number of years as a transport, but from the mid-1820s on she sailed between England and Canada. She was abandoned in a sinking state on 1 January 1834.
Brilliant was launched at Whitby in 1813. She spent the bulk of her career sailing between London and the Cape of Good Hope (CGH). Finally, she became waterlogged while sailing between New Brunswick and Dublin and on 7 February 1823, her crew and passengers had to abandon her.
Intrepid was a ship launched at Whitby in 1829. She traded with Quebec in 1830, later carrying migrants to Canada. She was lost at Colombo in 1834.
Venus was launched in France in 1802, possibly under another name. A Guernsey privateer captured her in 1805, but she first appeared as Venus in 1815. She traded generally until in 1830 she carried cargo to Port Jackson. Between 1831 and 1835 she made several voyages from Port Jackson as a whaler, sailing primarily to New Zealand waters. She returned to England and was last listed in 1838.
Emulous was a merchant ship launched at Whitby in 1817. She traded widely, including to Mauritius under a licence from the British East India Company (EIC). She foundered in the North Atlantic in May 1841.
Several vessels have been named Hibbert, Hibberts, or George Hibbert.
