East Rowan High School is a public, co-educational secondary school located in Granite Quarry, North Carolina. It is one of seven high schools in the Rowan-Salisbury School System.

History

East Rowan High School was formed in 1959, from the consolidation of Rockwell High School and Granite Quarry High School. [3]

School information

For the 2010–2011 school year, East Rowan High School had a total population of 1,110 students and 70.40 teachers on a (FTE) basis. For the student population, the gender ratio was 51.08% male to 48.92% female. The demographic group makeup of the student population was: White, 88.47%; Black, 6.22%; Hispanic, 2.79%; American Indian, 0.45%; and Asian/Pacific Islander, 0.81% (two or more races was 1.26%). For the same school year, 39.37% of the students received free and reduced-cost lunches. [1]

Graduations are generally held at Catawba College's Keppel Auditorium. [4]

Academics

East Rowan High School was rated a School of Distinction for the 2009–2010 [5] and 2010–2011 [6] school years on the North Carolina State Board of Education's yearly School Report Cards.

Athletics

East Rowan is a 3A school in the South Piedmont Conference. [7] The school's mascot is the Mustangs, wearing the school colors of red and blue. [8]

The East Rowan baseball team has won three state 3A championships (1995, 2010, 2024). [9]

Marching band competition

The school hosts the Mustang Classic, formerly known as the East Rowan-Food Lion Classic, a marching band competition inviting schools from around the North Carolina Piedmont. The event has been held annually every October since 1995. [10] [11]

Catawba College is a private college in Salisbury, North Carolina. Founded in 1851 by the North Carolina Classis of the Reformed Church in Newton, the college adopted its name from its county of origin, Catawba County, before moving to its current home of Salisbury in 1925. Catawba College still holds loose ties with the successor to the Reformed Church, the United Church of Christ. It offers over 70 undergraduate degrees. As of August 2024, Catawba has an endowment over $580 million.

South Iredell High School is a public school located near Troutman, North Carolina and is part of the Iredell-Statesville school system. South Iredell High is designated an Expected Growth School of Distinction by the North Carolina ABCs Accountability program. It educates students from surrounding areas including Troutman and south Statesville, North Carolina. The school was constructed in 1966 to replace Troutman High School. The school's enrollment was about 800 students in the 2005–2006 school year. Attendance was double that figure before 2002, when Lake Norman High School was created to alleviate South Iredell's overcrowding. In 2018 the school's enrollment had grown to just under 1600 students. The school has options for both traditional schooling and an IB Program. Parkland Magnet High School is a magnet school in Winston-Salem, North Carolina that offers an International Baccalaureate program and describes itself as a "Center for the Cultural Arts". Parkland was founded in 1965 as Parkland High School.
