Eastern Panorama is a monthly news magazine started in April 1992, by Dr. K. K. Jhunjhunwala and published from Shillong, the capital city of Meghalaya, India. [3] [4] It has since then been regularly published, without any break, [5] and has been disseminating news, events, views, and concerns of the people of the region. [3]

Profile

Eastern Panorama is published by Hill Publications Private Limited, Shillong. [2] Starting in the year 1992, the magazine is reported to have the highest circulation of any magazine in the Northeast India, with an estimated readership of ten lakhs. [4] The magazine also has an online edition, launched later. [4] [6] It is known to have covered a number of controversies such as Lottery scam and the Karbi Anglong massacre [4] and has covered issues like induction of the Meitei language in the sixth schedule of the Constitution of India, insurgency, influx and corruption. It claims to be the first magazine in the region to report about the insurgents of the region including United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) and NSCN and bring up the debate on the issue of Uranium Mining in the region.[ citation needed ]

Eastern Panorama Group of Publications have also launched a women's magazine, Women's Panorama, the first copy released on 11 November 2011 by the filmmaker, Manju Bora. [7] The launching was originally scheduled for 7 November 2011 but was postponed due to the death of Bhupen Hazarika, a renowned singer from Assam. [8] The magazine is noted to be the first women's magazine in English to be published from North East India. [8] Sonata Dkhar is the Editor of the magazine and Harsh Jhunjhunwala remains the Editor in Chief. [7]

Achiever's Award

The magazine has instituted an annual award, Achiever's Award, starting from 2013, to honour individual and collective achievements in any field. [9] The winners of the 2014 edition are: [9]

North Eastern Council (NEC) is a statutory advisory body constituted under the North Eastern Council Act 1971 and came into being on 7 November 1972 at Shillong. The eight States of Northeast India viz. Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim, are members of the council, with their respective Chief Ministers and Governors representing them. Sikkim was added to the council in the year 2002. The headquarters of the council is situated in Shillong and functions under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DONER) of the Government of India.

The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region is a Government of India ministry, established in September 2001, which functions as the nodal Department of the Central Government to deal with matters related to the socio-economic development of the eight States of Northeast India: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. It acts as a facilitator between the Central Ministries/ Departments and the State Governments of the North Eastern Region in the economic development including removal of infrastructural bottlenecks, provision of basic minimum services, creating an environment for private investment and to remove impediments to lasting peace and security in the North Eastern Region.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Eastern Fare Music Foundation</span>

The Eastern Fare Music Foundation is a music school, as well as a production and publishing house in Guwahati, Assam, India. The institute provides training for instrumental music in Western Classical music, Carnatic music and contemporary style. It was first founded in Bangalore in 2007. In 2016, the institute started its branches in Guwahati and Shillong. The branches in North East India provide classes in dance and Indian classical music.

Mukul Manda Sangma is an Indian politician and physician who was the 11th Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 2010 to 2018 and is currently leader of the opposition in the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly since 2018.Sangma also served as Deputy Chief Minister of Meghalaya from 2009 to 2010, 2007 to 2008 and 2005 to 2005. He has been a member of the All India Trinamool Congress since November 2021; previously, he was a longtime member of the Indian National Congress.

The Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council is a militant organization operating in Meghalaya, India. It claims to represent the Khasi-Jaintia tribal people, and its aim is to free Meghalaya from the alleged domination of outsiders from the Indian mainland. It was proscribed in India on 16 November 2000, but the ban was later lifted, before banning it again in 2019.

Sangbad Lahari was a Bengali daily newspaper published from Guwahati, Assam, India. Sangbad Lahari was launched in 2009 in Guwahati and later its Meghalaya edition was started in July, 2011. It was Meghalaya's first Bengali newspaper. The owner of the newspaper was Shillong Times Pvt Ltd, Meghalaya.

North East India Christian Council (NEICC) is a Protestant ecumenical council of North East India, affiliated to the National Council of Churches in India as one of the regional councils in the year 1939.

Neil Nongkynrih was an Indian concert pianist and conductor. He founded the Shillong Chamber Choir (SCC), which won the reality show India's Got Talent in 2010. He was awarded Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India in 2015.

Dkhar, is a term used by the Khasis to refer to non-Khasi people in Meghalaya. It is non derogatory but some perceived it as derogatory. For Khasis any non-tribal is a dkhar and they address them by that term. Sometimes the word dkhar have been collectively used with the term heathen (Non-believers), as most of the native Khasis are christian, While non-tribals are mainly hindu. In real, the term is mostly used against affluent Bengali Hindu settlers from West Bengal or the Bengali Hindu refugees from erstwhile East Pakistan It is sometimes abbreviated to ′Khar and may also denote a Khasi clan with the same name.

Patricia Mukhim is an Indian social activist, writer, journalist and the editor of Shillong Times, known for her social activism. A recipient of honours such as Chameli Devi Jain award, ONE India award, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry FLO award, Upendra Nath Brahma Soldier of Humanity award, Siva Prasad Barooah National award and North East Excellence award, she was honored by the Government of India, in 2000, with the fourth highest Indian civilian award of Padma Shri.

<i>Dau Huduni Methai</i> 2015 Indian film

Dau Huduni Methai is a 2015 Bodo language drama film directed by Manju Borah; based on the Assamese novel Dao Hudur Gaan written by Rashmirekha Bora and adapted as screenplay by the director herself. It was produced by Shankar Lall Goenka and stars Reshma Mushahary, Ahalya Daimary, and Nita Basumatary in the lead roles. The film was premiered at Montreal World Film Festival on 1 and 2 September 2015.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">2018 Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election</span> Indian regional election

The Meghalaya Legislative Assembly election was held on 27 February 2018 to elect 59 of 60 members to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, with the results declared on 3 March. The scheduled election in Williamnagar constituency was delayed to an undetermined date following the death of Nationalist Congress Party candidate Jonathone Sangma in an IED blast in East Garo Hills district on 18 February 2018. The incumbent Indian National Congress government, led by Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, attempted to win re-election for the third consecutive time.
