The Eastern Railway (German : Ostbahn), formerly also known as the Vienna-Raab railway (German : Wien-Raaber Bahn), is a two-track, electrified railway line that runs from Vienna towards Hungary. The name Eastern Railway refers to several branches of the line as well. The previous western terminus of the railway line in Vienna, Wien Südbahnhof, has been replaced by the new Hauptbahnhof, which allows for continuous east-west traffic and connects the Eastern Railway directly to the Western Railway and Southern Railway.
The Eastern Railway originates east of Wien Hauptbahnhof. It runs parallel to the Laaer Ostbahn for several kilometers before that line veers off to the east. There are several major railway yards in the vicinity of the Vienna Central Cemetery. The line continues south to Gramatneusiedl, at which point it turns east for the run to the Hungarian border. The line is electrified at 15 kV 16.7 Hz AC between Vienna and Hegyeshalom. [1]
As of the December 2022 timetable change, [update] the S60 of the Vienna S-Bahn provides frequent service between Wien Hauptbahnhof and Bruck an der Leitha . This is supplemented by Regional-Express services that operate between Vienna and Fertőszentmiklós , Bratislava-Petržalka, and Hegyeshalom. Long-distance Railjet and EuroCity services bound for Budapest and other destinations also use the route. [2]
The Austrian Eastern Railway was the name of a former railway company during the time of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Today, the term is still used to describe certain railway lines which were formerly operated by that company.

Leoben Hauptbahnhof is the main station at Leoben, a city in the federal state of Styria in Austria. The station is located on the Bruck an der Mur–Leoben railway. West of the station, the Rudolf Railway branches off to the north.
The Southern Railway is a railway in Austria that runs from Vienna to Graz and the border with Slovenia at Spielfeld via Semmering and Bruck an der Mur. The Verbindungsbahn, also known as the Stammstrecke, is a railway line in Vienna, Austria. It runs 16.2 kilometres (10.1 mi) across Vienna, roughly east–west, connecting with most major railway lines in the vicinity of Wien Hauptbahnhof. The section between Wien Praterstern and Wien Meidling, along with part of the North railway line, hosts most Vienna S-Bahn services.
The Gänserndorf–Marchegg railway line is a single-tracked electrified railway line that runs 18.2 kilometres (11.3 mi) from Gänserndorf to Marchegg, in Austria. It connects the North railway line at Gänserndorf with the Marchegger Ostbahn at Marchegg, on the Slovakian border.
