In May 2024, health officials confirmed a case of tuberculosis at the school. [4]
In August 2024, the North Carolina Department of Public Safety State Highway Patrol reported that two students at the school were killed, and another two were injured, in a car crash. [5] [6]

Murphy High School (MHS) is a public high school in Murphy, North Carolina. It serves grades 9–12 and is one of only three high schools in the Cherokee County Schools system. The MHS campus is sandwiched between U.S. Route 19 and the Valley River. The high school shares its campus with Murphy Middle School and the Cherokee County Schools Bus Garage. Rachel Henderson Hunt is an American politician. She is a member of the North Carolina State Senate and the lieutenant governor-elect of North Carolina. A Democrat, Hunt was elected in November 2022 to represent the 42nd district based in Mecklenburg County. Before that, Hunt served two terms in the North Carolina House, twice beating Republican Bill Brawley. When she is sworn in on January 1, 2025, Hunt will become the first Democrat elected to the lieutenant governor’s office since Walter Dalton in 2012, The first child of a previous lieutenant governor to hold the same position since Jim Hunt in 1973 and the second female lieutenant governor of North Carolina, after Bev Perdue.

An investigation by WBTV revealed that her husband did not disclose her role as a board member of American Leadership Academy North Carolina and two of its affiliated charter schools in a 2023 ethics filing. In 2024, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services announced that she owed the state $132,000 for disallowed expenses following a compliance review of her non-profit organization, Balanced Nutrition, Inc.
