Hatcher also served as Vice-Chairman of the Democratic National Committee in the early 1980s.

Alice J. Palmer was an American educator and politician who served as a member of the Illinois Senate. Known as a longtime progressive activist, Palmer represented the state's 13th Senate District from June 6, 1991, until January 8, 1997. At the time, the district spanned an economically diverse area and included the Chicago communities of Hyde Park, South Shore and Englewood.

Rudolph M. Clay Sr. was an American activist and politician who was active in Indiana politics as a member of the Democratic Party. Clay was first active in politics with his election to the Indiana Senate from the 3rd district, then served in local politics in Lake County, Indiana, and served as the 19th Mayor of Gary, Indiana. He was the first black person elected to the state senate from Lake County and the first black person elected countywide in Lake County.

Voters elected members to 25 of the 50 seats in the Indiana Senate to serve four-year terms in single-member constituencies. The primary election took place on Tuesday, May 3, 2022. The Republican Party had held a majority since 2011.

The 2023 Gary, Indiana, mayoral election was held on November 7, 2023, to elect the mayor of Gary, Indiana. Primary elections were held on May 2. Incumbent mayor Jerome Prince ran for re-election to a second term in office, but lost the Democratic primary to state senator Eddie Melton. This election marked the first time in the history of Gary, Indiana, that a one-term mayor was defeated in a reelection bid. Melton defeated Republican nominee Andrew Delano in the general election.
