Edo College is a secondary grammar school in Benin City, Nigeria, the oldest in the Mid-Western Region. [1] It was established in February, 1937 [2] and started as the Benin Middle School with forms, I, II and III. In April 1937, the school, with a total student enrollment of 76 pupils, moved from its temporary site at the old Government School, Benin City to a permanent site, the present Idia College premises. In 1973, the school further moved from Idia College premises to its present site along Murtala Mohammed Way, Benin City. Edo state in the federal Republic of Nigeria. [3]

With the Government take-over of schools in the state in 1973, the management of the College went from the direct control of the Ministry of Education to the Board of Education with particular reference to the appointment and deployment to staff to the school. [4]

Curriculum

Edo College has undergone many evolutionary changes in its educational structure. It had initially began as a day school, then boarding school for boys only but reverted to day school in the 1980s. In the mid-1990s it briefly had a dichotomous structure, day and evening school. Recently following donations from its most successful alumni it is now moving towards boarding school with a total student population of 800 and an average tuition of 60,000 Naira.

All these subjects are carefully woven throughout the 3-3 format of the Nigerian secondary school system. That is 3 years of Junior Secondary School and 3 years of Senior secondary school. A pre-undergraduate level the Higher School Certificate (HSC) /Advanced School Certificate (A-level) are being reintroduced. [4]

Unuamen also spelt Unuame is an ancient village community by Ovia river in Ovia North-East Local Government Area of Edo State, Nigeria. Unuame is about 15 kilometres (9 mi) from Benin City and 20 kilometres (12 mi) from Benin Airport. Unuame is one of the ancestral homes of Oba Esigie's maternal grandfather and home town to some group of Binis. The people of Unuame have remained loyal to the monarch since the establishment of the ancient Kingdom of Benin. Being a part of the Kingdom of Benin, Unuame is at the heart of the tropical rainforest in the southern part of Nigeria, way to the west of the delta of the Niger River and inland from the coast.

Ewuare II was crowned the Oba of Benin on 20 October 2016. He is the 40th Oba, a title created for the Head of State (Emperor) of the Benin Empire at some time between 1180 and 1300.

Idia Renaissance is a non governmental civil society organization based in Edo State, Nigeria. The organization organize activities around human trafficking, including reception of victims of human trafficking. Idia Renaissance was founded by Mrs. Eki Igbinedion, wife of Chief Lucky Igbinedion, a former governor of Edo State. In 2021, Idia Renaissance partnered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to create awareness on human trafficking and sexual exploitation of women girls.

Eki Igbinedion is the former First Lady of Edo State and wife of Lucky Igbinedion, the Former Governor of Edo State. Eki Igbinedion founded Idia Renaissance, a non governmental civil society organization based in Edo State, with the aim of combating human trafficking, including reception of victims of human trafficking.

The Oba Market is an open-air market situated at Ring Road in the center of Benin City, Edo State, Nigeria. Its roots date back to the 15th century, making it one of the most historically significant markets in the region.
