Education in Ahmedabad

Ahmedabad is considered as an important hub for higher education in India and its history is stretching back to Pre-Independence era.

Ahmedabad had a literacy rate of 79.89% in 2001 which rose to 89.62 percent in 2011. Out of this, male and female literacy are 93.96 and 84.81 percent respectively, as of 2011 census. [1]

Schools in Ahmedabad are run either by the AMC or privately by individuals and trusts. Majority of the schools are affiliated to the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSEB). Some schools like the Delhi Public School and the Kendriya Vidyalayas are associated with the Central Board for Secondary Education (CBSE). After completing their secondary education, students typically enroll in junior college (also known as pre-university) in one of three streams — Arts, Commerce, or Science. Upon completing the required coursework, students enroll in general or professional degrees.

Many colleges in the city are affiliated to the Gujarat University and offer courses in Medicine, Arts, Science, Commerce, Law and Management. Engineering colleges of the city are affiliated to Gujarat Technological University. Other deemed universities in Ahmedabad are Ahmedabad University, Gujarat Vidyapeeth, Nirma University of Science & Technology and Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Open University. [2]

Ahmedabad is home to prestigious institutes like the Indian Institute of Management, National Institute of Design, Mudra Institute of Communications Ahmedabad, National Institute of Fashion Technology, the Center for Environmental Planning and Technology, and B.J. Medical College.

Many academic and scientific institutions of national repute were set up in Ahmedabad due to the efforts of Vikram Sarabhai. The most important of these are the Physical Research Laboratory and the Space Applications Centre which fall under the Ahmedabad centre of the Indian Space Research Organisation. [3] The Vikram Sarabhai Community Science Centre aims to educate children about the various aspects of science.

He served as the chairman of historic and influential Anandji Kalyanji Trust that manages Shatrunjaya and several other Jain pilgrimage centers, for 50 years.

The Sarabhai family is a prominent Indian family active in several fields. The patriarch, Ambalal Sarabhai, was a leading industrialist. While he created significant wealth, his children interested themselves in a wide variety of other endeavours, and the family is better known for those activities, rather than for industrial enterprise, which is now all but defunct.

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan Indian educational trust

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan is an Indian educational trust. It was founded on 7 November 1938 by Dr. K. M. Munshi, with the support of Mahatma Gandhi. The trust programmes through its 119 centres in India, 7 centres abroad and 367 constituent institutions, cover "all aspects of life from the cradle to the grave and beyond – it fills a growing vacuum in modern life", as Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru observed when he first visited the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan in 1950.

The State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT), Kerala is a board of school education in India, conducted by the government of the state of Kerala, India. The board prepares the syllabus for schools affiliated with it. Their main academic focus is on medical care, engineering and telemarketing.

Mrinalini Sarabhai

Mrinalini Vikram Sarabhai was an Indian classical dancer, choreographer and instructor. She was the founder and director of the Darpana Academy of Performing Arts, an institute for imparting training in dance, drama, music and puppetry, in the city of Ahmedabad. She received many awards and citations in recognition of her contribution to art. She trained over 18,000 students in Bharatnatyam and Kathakali.

Vikram A Sarabhai Community Science Centre

Vikram A. Sarabhai Community Science Centre (VASCSC) or simply known as CSC, was established in the 1960s by the eminent space scientist, Vikram Sarabhai in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. The centre works towards popularising science and mathematics education among students, teachers and the public. Its mandate is to stimulate interest, encourage and expose the principles of science and scientific method and also to improve and find innovative methods of science education. It is located opposite Gujarat University. VASCSC is open to all members of the community.

Education in Kerala

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala is underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by efforts of the Church Mission Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala—primarily the Travancore Royal Family, the Nair Service Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam and Muslim Educational Society (MES)—also made significant contributions to the progress on education in Kerala. Local schools were known by the general word kalaris, some of which taught martial arts,but other village schools run by Ezhuthachans or Asians were for imparting general education. Christian missionaries and British rule brought the modern school education system to Kerala.

Ahmedabad University is a private, non-profit university in Gujarat, India, set up in 2009 by the Ahmedabad Education Society. Gujarat College

Gujarat Arts & Science College, popularly and earlierly known as Gujarat College, is one of the oldest educational institution of India and second arts and science college of Gujarat, near Ellis Bridge, Ahmedabad. The institution was founded in 1845 as a government-run educational institute. It was established as regular college in 1850, and is now under the direct management of the Education Department of Government of Gujarat.
