Ahmadabad Education Society is a premier educational trust, which has founded many schools and colleges in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India. [1] [2] [3]

One of the largest academic trusts in Gujarat, consisting of 25 institutions providing education to more than 10,000 college and 3,000 school going children and hostel facilities to 1,000 male and 450 female students.

History

Ahmedabad Education Society was established in 1935. [1] [4]

The society was established under the leadership of Ganesh Mavlankar, Kasturbhai Lalbhai and Amritlal Hargovindas, who pooled in their money, resources and influence. They were inspired with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, who felt there was an urgent need to develop Gujarat in the education front, as an extension of freedom struggle. [4]

The society was later responsible for creation of Gujarat University in 1949, the idea for which was mooted as early as 1920 by Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Patel, Kanhaiyalal Munshi, Ganesh Mavalankar, Kasturbhai Lalbhai, Anandshankar Dhruv, Amritlal Hargovinddas and others like Barrister, C C Gandhi. In 1937 the society started its first college named Lalbhai Dalpatbhai Arts College followed by Hargovinddas Lakshmichand College of Commerce and later went on start colleges in every field like science, commerce, pharmacy, engineering, architecture, management, etc. [6]

Later AES founded Ahmedabad University.

Admission Policy

It follows reservation policy for SC/ST category wherever applicable while also providing a 10% lower cut off in programs. Only small percentages are reserved for NRI students. For professional courses (MBA/MCA/Engineering) the admission is based on the Common Admission Test conducted by the state/central authority. [9]

His son Purushottam Mavalankar was later elected to the Lok Sabha twice from Gujarat.

Kasturbhai Lalbhai Indian industrialist

Kasturbhai Lalbhai was an Indian industrialist and philanthropist. He co-founded the Arvind Mills along with his brothers and several other institutes. He was a cofounder of the Ahmadabad Education Society which initiated Ahmedabad University and the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad. He served as the chairman of historic and influential Anandji Kalyanji Trust that manages Shatrunjaya and several other Jain pilgrimage centers, for 50 years.

Anandji Kalyanji Trust

Anandji Kalyanji Trust is the largest and the oldest Jain trust, managed by lay Jains, with headquarters at Ahmedabad which manages more than 1200 Jain temples. The original charitable trust is said to have been founded somewhere in decades of 1630–40 AD and is running under name Anandji Kalyanji ni Pedhi or Anandji Kalyanji Trust since decade of 1720.

Gujarat College

Gujarat Arts & Science College, popularly and earlierly known as Gujarat College, is one of the oldest educational institution of India and second arts and science college of Gujarat, near Ellis Bridge, Ahmedabad. The institution was founded in 1845 as a government-run educational institute. It was established as regular college in 1850, and is now under the direct management of the Education Department of Government of Gujarat.

Nathiba Hargovandas Lakhmichand (NHL) Municipal Medical College (NHLMMC), is a Municipal Medical College located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India affiliated with the Gujarat University. The Medical College was established by the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) in 1963, which became only the second Municipal Corporation in India to establish its own Medical College.
