Education in Ankara is primarily provided by public schools and private schools. Compulsory education lasts 12 years. Ankara is the center of education in Turkey. Many foundations such as Ministry of National Education, Council of Higher Education and Education and Science Workers' Union is centered in the city.

Universities

There are 14 universities in Ankara, 7 of them are private and 7 of them are public. It is the city with highest number of universities in Turkey after Istanbul. Universities in Ankara include Gazi University which is the first university in history of Republic of Turkey, [2] Middle East Technical University which is the first university in Turkey that taught a foreign language, [3] Bilkent University which is the first private university in Turkey [4] and Hacettepe University which is the most advanced university in Turkey in the field of medicine.

Student dormitories

There are 32 public and 306 private student dormitories in Ankara. There were 27,225 students staying in public dormitories and 12,251 students staying in private dormitories in 2018. Eighty-two schools across the city have their own pensions and number of students staying in those pensions is 12,343. [5]

Bahçeşehir University (BAU) is a private educational institution in Turkey, located around the Bosporus in Istanbul. The Turkish National Assembly authorized the establishment of the University of Bahçeşehir by the Bahçeşehir Uğur Education Foundation in 1998. An academic and strategic protocol was signed shortly after with San Diego State University in California, USA. The enrollment of the first students was made after the first placement exam (ÖSYS) in the 1999–2000 academic year. The Faculty of Political Science of the University of Ankara is the oldest faculty of social science in Turkey, being the successor of the "Mekteb-i Mülkiye" which was established in Istanbul on February 12, 1859, under the reign of Sultan Abdulaziz, then moved to Ankara in 1936 under a new name, and was incorporated to Ankara University on April 3, 1950, under its current name. The Faculty of Political Science provides higher education in the fields of Social Science, Public Finance, Economics, Public Administration, Labor Economics, Business Administration and International Relations. It is considered to be one of the most influential institutes in the political life of Turkey.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Students' Union (Turkey)</span>

Students' Union(Öğrenci Sendikası), or simply Öğren-Sen is a students' union that was founded on 29 November 2019 with the motto of "Let's save our future". It describes itself as a union that has the goal of confronting social and economic problems of students. These mainly concern topics such as dormitory debts, living expenses, de-qualification in education, future anxiety, careerism and exam stress. It is the second students' union in Turkey, following Genç-Sen, which was closed in 2011.
