Born in London in 1784, Brennan joined the East India Company in 1810. He later moved to their subsidiary, Bombay Marine Services. He worked as a cabin boy on a ship. The ship on which he was working crashed during a voyage. Brennan, who was stranded in the sea near Kannur Thalassery, swam to the shores of Thalassery. [1] He then decided to stay in Thalassery. In 1824, Brennan was appointed Master Attendant at the Thalassery Port Office, where he continued for 35 years. [2] [3]

The people of Thalassery affectionately called him Brennan Saip. [1]

Brennan was thought to be unmarried and had only one adopted son. [1] But later, it is said that Brennan had a daughter on a woman from Thalassery, whose name was Flora, and she was buried in St. Stephen's Church Cemetery in Ooty at the age of 16. [4] [1]

Brennan died on 2 October 1859. The tomb of Edward Brennan is located near St. John's Church, behind the Thalassery Fort, which was built with a portion of Edward Brennan's livelihood. [1] The tomb inscription reads, "A sterling upright Englishman." [1]

As a philanthropist

In 1846 Brennan formed a trust called the Tellechery Poor Fund with the vision of helping the poor and orphans. [1] His first share was Rs 3,000 which he had in his hand. Eventually his total savings of Rs. 1,50,000 was paid to the trust. Brennan in his will mentioned to set up a 'free school' in the town of Thalassery to provide free education to all. [1] This school later became Thalassery Brennan College.

As mentioned in his will, the free school was founded in 1861 and it was merged with the Basel German Mission School in 1866 and was upgraded to a high school in 1868. [1] In 1871 Basel Mission withdrawn support to the school. [1] The school was converted into a district government school in 1883 and was taken over by the Thalassery Municipality in 1884. [1] Ten years later, the school grew into Brennan College and was the first college between Kozhikode and Mangalore that time. [1] The school, which was separated from the college in 1949, was shifted to Chirakkara, but in 1958 the college moved to Dharmadam and the school returned to its old building. [1]

The importance and antiquity of education in Kerala are underscored by the state's ranking as among the most literate in the country. The educational transformation of Kerala was triggered by the efforts of the Church Mission Society missionaries, who were the pioneers that promoted mass education in Kerala, in the early decades of the 19th century. The local dynastic precursors of modern-day Kerala—primarily the Travancore Royal Family, the Nair Service Society, Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam and Muslim Educational Society (MES)—also made significant contribution to the progress on education in Kerala. Local schools were known by the general word kalaris, some of which taught martial arts, but other village schools run by Ezhuthachans were for imparting general education. Christian missionaries and British rule brought the modern school education system to Kerala. Ezhuthu palli was the name used in earlier times. The word was derived from the schools run by the Buddhist monasteries. For centuries villages used to setup an ezhuthupally or ashan pallikoodam with one or two teachers. Students used to go this school from nearby areas and learn languages, literature, mathematics, grammar etc. After completing this students may continue study about specific subjects such as ayurveda, astrology, accounting etc. Censuses during 1800 shows that Travancore, Cochin, Kannur areas have many such schools. Even name list of ashans were used to be published along with the census.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Culture of Thalassery</span>

The British had considerable impact on the culture of Thalassery, a city in northern Kerala, India. As an ancient trade center, the trading and business relations that existed with the Europeans and the Arabs brought people and ideas from many other lands to Thalassery. The Christian missionaries and the educational reforms they brought played an important role in transforming society. The migration to Travancore during Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan's invasion was another factor, resulting in less social distance between upper and lower castes from the 18th to mid-20th centuries. This effect did not reach the Travancore Cochin area, which was not under the Madras Presidency, where inequality was greater.
