Association football is the most popular sport in Sweden, with over 240,000 licensed players with another 240,000 youth players. There are around 3,200 active clubs fielding over 8,500 teams, which are playing on the 7,900 pitches available in the country. Football was first played in Sweden in the 1870s, the first championship was decided in 1896 and the Swedish Football Association was founded in 1904. Despite being a relatively small country population-wise, both the men's and women's national teams and the club teams have gained rather large success from time to time.
John Rune Alvbåge is a Swedish former professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Beginning his career with Torslanda IK in 1999, he went on to play professionally in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, the United States, and Cyprus before announcing his retirement in 2022. A full international between 2006 and 2009, he won four caps for the Sweden national football team and was a squad member at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Folke Ronnie Wallentin Hellström was a Swedish professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. He represented Hammarby IF and 1. FC Kaiserslautern during a career that spanned between 1966 and 1984. He was considered one of the world's best goalkeepers in the 1970s. In 1988, he played one Allsvenskan game for GIF Sundsvall following an injury crisis. As a full international between 1968 and 1980, he won 77 caps for the Sweden national team and represented his country at the 1970, 1974, and 1978 FIFA World Cups. He was awarded Guldbollen as Sweden's best footballer of the year in both 1971 and 1978.
Hans Pontus Farnerud is a Swedish former professional footballer who played as a midfielder. Starting off his professional career with Landskrona BoIS in the late 1990s, he went on to represent Monaco, Strasbourg, Sporting, and Stabaek before finishing up his career at IFK Göteborg in 2013. He won 11 caps for the Sweden national team between 2002 and 2010 and was a squad player for his country at the 2002 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2004.
Karl Magnus Pehrsson is a Swedish football manager and former professional player who is the Director of Football at Spanish club Vélez CF.
Robin Mikael Söder is a Swedish former professional footballer who played as a forward. He spent the majority of his professional career at IFK Göteborg, but also represented Esbjerg fB in Denmark and Lokeren in Belgium. He won one cap for the Sweden national team in 2020.

The 2015 season was Malmö FF's 104th in existence, their 80th season in Allsvenskan and their 15th consecutive season in the league. They competed in Allsvenskan where they finished fifth, 2014–15 Svenska Cupen where they were knocked out in the quarter-finals and the 2015–16 UEFA Champions League where they were knocked out in the group stage. Malmö FF also participated in one competition in which the club continued playing in for the 2016 season, 2015–16 Svenska Cupen. The season began with the group stage of Svenska Cupen on 22 February, league play started on 6 April and concluded on 31 October. The season concluded with the last Champions League group stage match on 8 December.
The 2015 season was IFK Göteborg's 110th in existence, their 83rd season in Allsvenskan and their 39th consecutive season in the league. They competed in Allsvenskan where they finished second for the second season in a row, Svenska Cupen where they won the competition, Svenska Supercupen where they finished as runners-up and in qualification for the UEFA Europa League where they were knocked out in the third qualifying round. IFK Göteborg also participated in one competition in which the club continued playing in for the 2016 season, 2015–16 Svenska Cupen. The season began with the group stage of Svenska Cupen on 21 February, league play started on 5 April and will last until 31 October. The season will conclude on 8 November with Svenska Supercupen against IFK Norrköping.
Per Emil Hugo Andersson is a Swedish professional footballer who plays as a centre-back for Danish Superliga club Randers FC.

Carl "Ceve" Linde was a Swedish football player, manager, administrator and pioneer. He was also involved in Swedish sports in general, and was a prominent sports journalist. He played for IFK Uddevalla and IFK Göteborg during his short playing career. Linde was more successful as a sports manager and administrator, both for IFK Göteborg and the national team. He played a big part in various roles for the national team and the Swedish Football Association, for which he was inducted into the Swedish Football Hall of Fame.
The Big Three (Clubs) (Swedish: De tre största (klubbarna)) is a phrase used to refer to the three most successful football clubs in Sweden by authors, journalists, club representatives, and supporters. The three clubs AIK from Stockholm, IFK Göteborg from Gothenburg, and Malmö FF from Malmö have a combined 50 out of 119 Swedish championship titles, 30 out of 64 Svenska Cupen titles, and occupy the top three places in the All-time Allsvenskan table.
Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna Göteborg, commonly known as IFK Göteborg, IFK or simply Göteborg, is a Swedish women's football team based in Gothenburg. Founded in 2019 as part of the football club IFK Göteborg, the team plays in Division 2 Nordvästra Götaland, the 4th level of women's football in Sweden. IFK is affiliated with Göteborgs Fotbollförbund and play their home games at Valhalla IP. The club colours are blue and white, colours shared both with the sports society which the club originated from, Idrottsföreningen Kamraterna, and with the coat of arms of the city of Gothenburg.
The 2021 season is Malmö FF's 110th in existence, their 86th season in Allsvenskan and their 21st consecutive season in the league. They are competing in Allsvenskan, the 2020–21 Svenska Cupen, the 2021–22 Svenska Cupen, and the UEFA Champions League.
The 2022 season was Hammarby Fotboll's 107th in existence, their 53rd season in Allsvenskan and their 8th consecutive season in the league. They competed in Allsvenskan and Svenska Cupen, as defending champions. League play started in April. Martí Cifuentes made his first season as head coach.
The 2023 season is Malmö FF's 112th in existence, their 88th season in Allsvenskan and their 23rd consecutive season in the league. They are competing in Allsvenskan, the 2022–23 Svenska Cupen and the 2023–24 Svenska Cupen.
