Edwin Maurice Outwater (born 12 April 1971) is an American conductor.
Outwater is a graduate of Harvard University, graduating cum laude in 1993 with a degree in English literature. [1] While at Harvard, he was music director of the Bach Society Orchestra and wrote the music for the 145th annual production of the Hasty Pudding Theatricals. He subsequently continued his education at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where his instructors included Heiichiro Ohyama and Paul Polivnick. Outwater earned a master's degree in conducting from the University of California, Santa Barbara. [1]
Outwater has served as resident conductor and associate guest conductor of the Florida Philharmonic, where he designed the Florida Philharmonic Family Series and its Music for Youth programmes. He has also been associate conductor of the Festival-Institute at Round Top (a teaching program), principal conductor of the Adriatic Chamber Music Festival in Molise, Italy, and assistant conductor of the Tulsa Philharmonic.[ citation needed ]
From 2001 to 2006, Outwater was resident conductor of the San Francisco Symphony. [2] In parallel, from 2001 to 2005, he was music director of the San Francisco Symphony Youth Orchestra, [2] where he led the orchestra in all of their concerts as well as on tour to Europe in the summer of 2004. During the tour, the orchestra made its debut at Vienna's Musikverein and the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées in Paris, and returned to Amsterdam's Concertgebouw. In 2004, Outwater's his education programs received the Leonard Bernstein award for excellence in educational programming. Outwater has served as music director of the Santa Barbara Youth Symphony, and has been on the music faculties of the University of Tulsa, Idyllwild Arts Academy, and University of California, Santa Barbara.[ citation needed ]
From 2007 to 2017, Outwater was music director of the Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony. [3] In April 2020, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music announced the appointment of Outwater as its music director. [4]
In July 2022, Outwater first guest-conducted the BBC Concert Orchestra (BBC CO) at the BBC Proms, [5] in what was also his Proms debut. He returned to the BBC Proms and the BBC Concert Orchestra in July 2023. [6] In June 2024, the BBC CO announced the appointment of Outwater as its next principal guest conductor, with the additional title of curator, effective 1 September 2024. [7]

The Kitchener–Waterloo Symphony (KWS) was an orchestra based in the twin cities of Kitchener and Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. Its home venue was located at Centre In The Square in Kitchener, Ontario. The orchestra consisted of 52 professional musicians under full-time contract. KWS performed close to 90 performances during a 38-week season for a combined concert audience of over 90,000. The orchestra is regularly heard across Canada on CBC Radio Two. In September 2023, the symphony abruptly halted its 2023-2024 season, citing its financial difficulties, and later declared bankruptcy. This included all concerts and other activities such as, Kitchener-Waterloo Symphony Youth Orchestra and Bridge to Music.

He was a leading interpreter of Czech classical music, and became chief conductor of the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra in 1990, a role he would serve on two occasions during a combined span of seven years. He also served a six-year tenure as the chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra from 2006 to 2012. He gained international renown and repute for his performances of the works of Czech composers such as Antonín Dvořák and Bohuslav Martinů, and was credited as "the most profound proponent of Czech orchestral music" by Czech music specialist Professor Michael Beckerman.

The orchestra rehearses in Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall and has been directed by Daniel Stewart since the 2019-2020 season.

The Tulsa Youth Symphony Orchestra (TYS) is an Oklahoma nonprofit arts organization founded in 1963 to provide advanced orchestral training and performance experience for young musicians in Northeastern Oklahoma. As of 2016, more than 200 students, ages 8 to 18, participate in the program’s two orchestras. The orchestra is composed of students from northeast Oklahoma communities and schools including Tulsa, Bartlesville, Owasso, Sapulpa, Sand Springs, Broken Arrow, Bixby, Coweta, Grove, Oologah, Jenks, and Holland Hall, as well as home schooled children.
