Elizabeth A. T. Smith (born 1958) is an American art historian, museum curator, writer, and presently the executive director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation. [1] She has formerly held positions as a curator at the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA), the chief curator and deputy director of programs at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the executive director, curatorial affairs, at the Art Gallery of Ontario. She is the author of numerous books on art and architecture, [2] including Blueprints for Modern Living: History and Legacy of the Case Study Houses [3] [4] ; Lee Bontecou: A Retrospective, [5] Helen Frankenthaler: Composing with Color, 1962–63, [6] and many others. Elizabeth Smith joined the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation as its first executive director in fall 2013. [9] [10]
Her previous position as executive director, curatorial affairs at the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) in Toronto was from 2010 to 2013, [11] and her position as Chief Curator and Deputy Director of Programs at Chicago's Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) was from 1999 to 2009. [12] [13] Prior to joining MCA, her position as Curator at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA) in Los Angeles was from 1983 to 1999.
Smith's curatorial work and writings have spread extensively across many areas, including visual art, public art, and architecture from mid-20th century forward, and have continuously advanced the work of many women artists. While at AGO, Smith curated and oversaw exhibitions on the work of artists Yael Bartana [14] and Kim Adams, [15] as well as group shows with artists including LaToya Ruby Frazier and Erin Shirreff, and was curator-in-charge of traveling exhibitions such as Abstract Expressionist New York, [16] Chagall and the Russian Avant-Garde curated by Angela Lampe, [17] and Picasso: Masterpieces from the Musée Picasso. [18]
As MCA's Chief Curator, Smith curated solo exhibitions of artists Jenny Holzer, [19] [20] Lee Bontecou, [21] Kerry James Marshall, [22] Roberto Matta, [23] Catherine Opie, [24] and Donald Moffett, exhibitions on architecture such as Sustainable Architecture in Chicago: Works in Progress [25] and Garofalo Architects: Between the Museum and the City, [26] and many presentations of MCA's collection. Smith's curatorial projects while at MOCA Los Angeles ranged from Blueprints for Modern Living: History and Legacy of the Case Study Houses, [27] The Architecture of R.M. Schindler , named by the American section of the International Association of Art Critics as the "Best Architecture or Design Exhibition of the Year", [28] [29] [30] [31] and At the End of the Century: 100 Years of Architecture to a survey of the Cindy Sherman's photographs [32] [33] and the first museum presentations of then-emerging artists Uta Barth, [34] Toba Khedoori, [35] Catherine Opie, [36] and Margaret Honda [37] as well as a collaboration between artist Kiki Smith and architect Wolf Prix of Coop Himmelblau. Besides her exhibition catalogues, Smith's writings have appeared in such publications as Do-ho Suh: Drawings; [39] Chicago Makes Modern; Buckminster Fuller: Starting with the Universe; [40] Design Cities 1851–2008; [41] Birth of the Cool; [42] and the 54th Carnegie International. [43] She is the author of Techno Architecture (2000) [44] and books on the Los Angeles Case Study Houses (2002/2006). [45] Her essay "Redefining a Practice: Helen Frankenthaler and Painting in the Early 1960s" appeared in the catalogue Helen Frankenthaler: Composing with Color, 1962–1963, [46] co-published by Gagosian Gallery and Rizzoli International Publications in 2014. Her essay on Helen Frankenthaler's use of color was published in a special issue on color in the journal PUBLIC, [47] in October 2015, her text on five sculptors of the 1950s appears in the book "Revolution in the making: Abstract Sculpture by Women 1947–2016," [48] [49] and she is the lead essayist in the 2021 book Catherine Opie, [50] published by Phaidon Press.
Smith received her B.A. from Barnard College and her M.A. in Art History at Columbia University in New York City. She was adjunct professor in the Public Art Studies [51] program of the School of Fine Arts at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and currently serves as an adjunct professor in the Museum Term Program at Bennington College. She has received awards and honors from the Getty Foundation, the International Association of Art Critics, the Chicago Tribune , and others. Smith served a six-year term on the Board of Trustees of the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts in Chicago [52] and was a 2012 Fellow of the Center for Curatorial Leadership [53] in New York. In 2021 she was awarded by the government of France the insignia of Chevalier of the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres, for helping American audiences connect with French artists across decades. [54] She has served as a member of the Board of Trustees of the Association of Art Museum Curators (AAMC), [55] and ArtTable, a leadership organization for women in the arts. [56]
In 2004 Smith won the "Best Monographic Museum Show Nationally" award from the Art Critics Association/USA for her exhibition Lee Bontecou: A Retrospective, [57] and her catalogue for the exhibition was described by the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, as "one of the best-selling in the museum's history." [58]
Helen Frankenthaler was an American abstract expressionist painter. She was a major contributor to the history of postwar American painting. Having exhibited her work for over six decades, she spanned several generations of abstract painters while continuing to produce vital and ever-changing new work. Frankenthaler began exhibiting her large-scale abstract expressionist paintings in contemporary museums and galleries in the early 1950s. She was included in the 1964 Post-Painterly Abstraction exhibition curated by Clement Greenberg that introduced a newer generation of abstract painting that came to be known as color field. Born in Manhattan, she was influenced by Greenberg, Hans Hofmann, and Jackson Pollock's paintings. Her work has been the subject of several retrospective exhibitions, including a 1989 retrospective at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, and been exhibited worldwide since the 1950s. In 2001, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts.
The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) is a contemporary art museum with two locations in greater Los Angeles, California. The main branch is located on Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles, near the Walt Disney Concert Hall. MOCA's original space, initially intended as a temporary exhibit space while the main facility was built, is now known as the Geffen Contemporary, in the Little Tokyo district of downtown Los Angeles. Between 2000 and 2019, it operated a satellite facility at the Pacific Design Center facility in West Hollywood.
The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago is a contemporary art museum near Water Tower Place in Near North Side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. The museum, which was established in 1967, is one of the world's largest contemporary art venues. The museum's collection is composed of thousands of objects of Post-World War II visual art. The museum is run gallery-style, with individually curated exhibitions throughout the year. Each exhibition may be composed of temporary loans, pieces from their permanent collection, or a combination of the two.
The Hammer Museum, which is affiliated with the University of California, Los Angeles, is an art museum and cultural center known for its artist-centric and progressive array of exhibitions and public programs. Founded in 1990 by the entrepreneur-industrialist Armand Hammer to house his personal art collection, the museum has since expanded its scope to become "the hippest and most culturally relevant institution in town." Particularly important among the museum's critically acclaimed exhibitions are presentations of both historically overlooked and emerging contemporary artists. The Hammer Museum also hosts over 300 programs throughout the year, from lectures, symposia, and readings to concerts and film screenings. As of February 2014, the museum's collections, exhibitions, and programs are completely free to all visitors.
Catherine Sue Opie is an American fine art photographer and educator. She lives and works in Los Angeles, as a professor of photography at the University of California, Los Angeles.
Lee Bontecou was an American sculptor and printmaker and a pioneer figure in the New York art world. She kept her work consistently in a recognizable style, and received broad recognition in the 1960s. Bontecou made abstract sculptures in the 1960s and 1970s and created vacuum-formed plastic fish, plants, and flower forms in the 1970s. Rich, organic shapes and powerful energy appear in her drawings, prints, and sculptures. Her work has been shown and collected in many major museums in the United States and in Europe.
Adam Lerner is the JoAnn McGrath Executive Director/CEO of Palm Springs Art Museum, a position he assumed in July 2021. In this capacity, he oversees the museum's permanent collection of over 12,000 art objects including the Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion, and Frey House II. Formerly, he was the Director of the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver and Chief Animator in the Department of Fabrications. He was the founder and Executive Director of The Laboratory of Art and Ideas at Belmar until The Lab merged with the MCA Denver in March 2009.
The feminist art movement in the United States began in the early 1970s and sought to promote the study, creation, understanding and promotion of women's art. First-generation feminist artists include Judy Chicago, Miriam Schapiro, Suzanne Lacy, Judith Bernstein, Sheila de Bretteville, Mary Beth Edelson, Carolee Schneeman, Rachel Rosenthal, and many other women. They were part of the Feminist art movement in the United States in the early 1970s to develop feminist writing and art. The movement spread quickly through museum protests in both New York and Los Angeles, via an early network called W.E.B. that disseminated news of feminist art activities from 1971 to 1973 in a nationally circulated newsletter, and at conferences such as the West Coast Women's Artists Conference held at California Institute of the Arts and the Conference of Women in the Visual Arts, at the Corcoran School of Art in Washington, D.C..

Tony Greene was a visual artist whose work combines photographic imagery with an overlay of thickly applied decorative patterns or calligraphic letterforms. Rarely exhibited during his lifetime, his work has subsequently staged what the Los Angeles Times describes as "a remarkable posthumous comeback," including a mini-retrospective of Greene's work as part of the 2014 Whitney Biennial exhibition, and additional exhibitions held in Chicago and Los Angeles during 2014, including the UCLA Hammer Museum's biennial "Made in LA" exhibition.
Jenelle Porter is an American art curator and author of numerous exhibition catalogs and essays about contemporary art and craft. She has curated important exhibitions that have helped studio craft to gain acceptance as fine arts. These include the exhibitions Dirt on Delight: Impulses That Form Clay at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Philadelphia in 2009 and Fiber: Sculpture 1960–Present at the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston in 2014.

Lynn Zelevansky is an American art historian and curator. Formerly Henry Heinz II Director of the Carnegie Museum of Art, she is currently based in New York City. Zelevansky curated "Love Forever: Yayoi Kusama" (1998) and "Beyond Geometry: Experiments in Form" (2004) for Los Angeles County Museum of Art from 1995 to 2009. While working at MoMA (1987–1995), she curated “Sense and Sensibility: Women Artists and Minimalism in the Nineties” (1994), that institution's first all-female exhibition. AICA awarded it "Best Emerging Art Exhibition New York."
The MAK Center for Art and Architecture is an art museum and cultural center headquartered in the Schindler House in West Hollywood, California, United States. It is affiliated with the Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna (MAK). The Center is situated in three architectural landmarks, designed by Austrian-American architect R.M. Schindler. The center operates a residency program, an exhibition space at the Mackey Apartments and a study center at the Fitzpatrick-Leland House.
Elizabeth Armstrong is an American curator of contemporary and modern art. Beginning in the late 1980s, she served in chief curatorial and leadership roles at the Walker Art Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, San Diego, Orange County Museum of Art (OCMA), Minneapolis Institute of Arts and Palm Springs Art Museum. She has organized numerous touring exhibitions and catalogues that gained national and international attention; among the best known are: "In the Spirit of Fluxus", "Ultrabaroque: Aspects of Post-Latin American Art", and "Birth of the Cool: California Art, Design, and Culture at Midcentury". She is also known for organizing three California Biennials (2002–6) and notable exhibitions of David Reed and Mary Heilmann. Armstrong's curatorial work and publications have been recognized by the Andy Warhol Foundation, the Center for Curatorial Leadership, the Getty Foundation Pacific Standard Time project and the National Endowment for the Arts, among other organizations.
