Elmira Mangum (born April 10,1953) is an American educator and retired university administrator,who served as President of Florida A&M University from 2014 to 2017. She was the 11th President of FAMU and the first woman to permanently hold the position in the 128-year history of the university. [1] She served as President until March 2017,but was on administrative leave from September 2016 to March 2017.
Elmira Mangum was born in Durham,North Carolina [2] in 1953 [3] to Ernest and Alice Blanche (née VanHook) Mangum. [2] She obtained her bachelor's magna cum laude from North Carolina Central University and went on to receive two master's degrees in public policy and public administration,as well as a master's degree in urban and regional planning,from the University of Wisconsin,Madison. Subsequently,she earned a Ph.D. in educational leadership and policy at the University at Buffalo. She served as an associate provost at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for nine years and in 2010 became the vice president for budget and planning at Cornell University. [4]

James H. Ammons is an American educator,who is the Chancellor of Southern University at New Orleans. He served as president of Florida A&M University (FAMU) from July 2,2007,until his resignation took effect on July 16,2012. He is a native Floridian who grew up in the heart of Florida's citrus belt. He graduated from Winter Haven High School in 1970 and entered Florida A&M University on the Thirteen College Curriculum Program during the fall semester of 1970. Ammons was appointed Chancellor at Southern University in New Orleans January 8,2021.

The FAMU-FSU College of Engineering is the joint college of engineering of Florida A&M University and Florida State University. The College of Engineering was established as a joint program serving two universities in Tallahassee,Florida:The Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University,which received recognition from the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Engineering in 2010 for ranking number one as the institution of origin for African Americans earning Doctorates in Natural Science and Engineering;and,Florida State University which has gained worldwide recognition for its extensive graduate and research programs. Frederick Stephen Humphries Sr. was an American academic administrator and chemistry professor. He served as President of Tennessee State University,and President of Florida A&M University. He was also President and CEO of the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education from 2001 to 2003. Florida A&M University conferred the President Emeritus title upon him on December 11,2009. He was Regent Professor at the Florida A&M University College of Law from 2003 until his retirement in 2014.
Patricia Stephens Due was one of the leading African-American civil rights activists in the United States,especially in her home state of Florida. Along with her sister Priscilla and others trained in nonviolent protest by CORE,Due spent 49 days in one of the nation's first jail-ins,refusing to pay a fine for sitting in a Woolworth's "White only" lunch counter in Tallahassee,Florida in 1960. Her eyes were damaged by tear gas used by police on students marching to protest such arrests,and she wore dark glasses for the rest of her life. She served in many leadership roles in CORE and the NAACP,fighting against segregated stores,buses,theaters,schools,restaurants,and hotels,protesting unjust laws,and leading one of the most dangerous voter registration efforts in the country in northern Florida in the 1960s.

Gwendolyn Sawyer Cherry was an American politician in the state of Florida. She was a member of the Florida House of Representatives from the 106th district. The first African-American woman to win election to the Florida Legislature,she served from 1970 until 1979.
Nelson Elijah Townsend was an American college athletics administrator. Townsend served seven tenures as athletic director at four different universities:the University of Maryland Eastern Shore,Delaware State University (1979–1986),Florida A&M University and the University at Buffalo (1987–1998). He was the University at Buffalo's first African American athletic director. At both Delaware State and Buffalo,Townsend was responsible for leading the athletic department to achieve full NCAA Division I status,as both schools transitioned from lower levels of NCAA hierarchy. Townsend was inducted to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame in 1995 and was inducted to both the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics Halls of Fame in 2012.
Flossie M. Byrd was a home economist,family and consumer services scientist,educator,and the first provost and vice president for academic affairs at the public historically black university (HBCU),Prairie View A&M University (PVAMU) in Prairie View,Texas. She taught in Florida public high schools and at Florida A&M University in Tallahassee,Florida before moving to PVAMU. She earned a PhD in Home Economics Education with minors in child development and educational psychology and measurement from Cornell University in 1963. Her research interests included concept formation,family membership disability,and family resource management.
Sybil Lenora Collins Mobley was Dean Emerita of the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) School of Business and Industry. She led its business program and was the founding dean of its Business School. She also oversaw community projects including a revitalization program for majority African American Gretna,Florida.
Florida Agriculture &Mechanical Hospital (1911-1971) was the first institution in Florida providing medical care to African Americans,who,during the segregation period,were not permitted to receive care at whites-only hospitals. There was no other such institution within 150 miles (240 km) of Tallahassee. In 1940,"less than a dozen" counties in Florida had hospital facilities for Negroes.
