The Buffalo Braves were an American professional basketball team based in Buffalo, New York. The Braves competed in the National Basketball Association (NBA) as a member of the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference. In 1978, owner John Y. Brown Jr. swapped franchises with then-Boston Celtics owner Irv Levin, who then moved the team to San Diego, where it was renamed the San Diego Clippers. The franchise relocated to Los Angeles in 1984, becoming the Los Angeles Clippers.

Griffin primarily played with the Los Angeles Clippers of the National Basketball Association (NBA) and played college basketball for the Oklahoma Sooners, where he was named the consensus national college player of the year as a sophomore. In the 1992 NBA draft, the Clippers selected Randy Woods out of La Salle University with the sixteenth overall pick, and selected Elmore Spencer out of UNLV with the 25th overall pick. In the off-season, the team acquired Mark Jackson from the New York Knicks, acquired second-year center Stanley Roberts from the Orlando Magic in a three-team trade, acquired Hot Plate Williams from the Washington Bullets, and signed free agent Kiki Vandeweghe. After losing their first three games, the Clippers played solid basketball winning 12 of their next 16 games, and later held a 26–25 record at the All-Star break. The Clippers finished fourth in the Pacific Division with a 41–41 record, making their second consecutive playoff appearance.
