Elst is a village belonging to the municipality of Brakel. It is located in the Denderstreek in the province East Flanders in Belgium.
The village was mentioned in 977 as Elsuth. There are two mills in the village. [2] The oldest is the Perlinckmolen , an overshot watermill, which originated from before 898, and is one of the oldest in Belgium. The current mill was reconstructed in 1571. In 1859, it was severely damaged in a storm. In 1974, it stopped operations, and was declared a monument the next year. [3]
The Leberg is located in the village. It is a steep 99 metre hill, and has become known as a significant obstacle in the Tour of Flanders. [4]
Elst is known for its Geutelingen , a kind of pancake. [5]
Assenede is a municipality located in the Belgian province of East Flanders. The municipality comprises the towns of Assenede proper, Bassevelde, Boekhoute and Oosteeklo. On 1 January 2021, Assenede had a total population of 14,369. The total area is 87.22 km².
Brakel is a municipality in the Belgian province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek and the Flemish Ardennes. The name is derived from a Carolingian villa Braglo first mentioned in 866 and located in the center of Opbrakel. Since 1970, the municipality has comprised the villages of Nederbrakel, Opbrakel, Michelbeke, Elst, Zegelsem. In 1977 Everbeek, Parike and part of Sint-Maria-Oudenhove were added. On 1 January 2018, Brakel had a population of 14,781. The area is 56.46 km² which gives a population density of 262 per km². The mayor is Stefaan De Vleeschouwer.
Lierde is a municipality located in the Flemish Ardennes, the hilly southern part of the Belgian province of East Flanders in the Denderstreek. The municipality comprises the towns of Deftinge, Hemelveerdegem, Sint-Maria-Lierde and Sint-Martens-Lierde. In 2021, Lierde had a total population of 6,626. The total area is 26.13 km². Lierde borders to Brakel, Zottegem, Herzele and Geraardsbergen. Lierde is known for the Ronde van vlaanderen, a bike race where cyclists climb all the hills of the Flemish Ardennes.
Zwalm is a municipality located in Flanders, in the Flemish province of East Flanders, in Belgium. The municipality comprises the villages of Beerlegem, Dikkele, Hermelgem, Hundelgem, Meilegem, Munkzwalm, Nederzwalm, Paulatem, Roborst, Rozebeke, Sint-Blasius-Boekel, Sint-Denijs-Boekel and Sint-Maria-Latem. In 2021, Zwalm had a total population of 8,244. The total area is 33.82 km2.

Doel is a subdivision of the municipality of Beveren in the Flemish province of East Flanders in Belgium. It is located near the river the Scheldt, in a polder of the Waasland. Since 1965, there have been plans to extend the Port of Antwerp into Doel and demolish the village. However, protests have caused a stalemate. Its top is at 99 m altitude, making it one of the highest hills of the Zwalm region, just north of the Flemish Ardennes. The road has an asphalt surface and links the valley town of Elst to the hilltop town of Zegelsem.
