Elyrosis a Greek ferry, which is the second newest ship, being part of ANEK Lines fleet, following Asterion II . She is a motor Ro-Ro/Passenger ferryboat, built in 1998 at Mitsubishi Heavy Industries shipyard at Shimonoseki, Japan, and put into service by ANEK at 2008 (previously operated under different names and owners). It holds a total of 1,874 passengers and 620 vehicles, [2] She has 323 passenger air type seats. She has two Pielstick 12PC4-2 engines, [3] with combined power of 26,180 kW and reaches speeds of up to 24 knots. It also has an internet cafe. The ship has been awarded by ShipPax Awards 2009 [4] as the ship with the best retrofit for 2008. It was named after Elyros; an ancient city of southwestern Crete.

History

1990s: Construction and first years

The ship was built by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and was launched on 5 June 1997. The ship was originally named Sunflower Tsukuba, as many KK Blue Highway Line ships had the title "Sunflower" before their name, along with a red sun with orange rays to their livery. [5] The ship was finished on 18 October 1997.

It was delivered on 19 January 1998 to KK Blue Highway Line and deployed on the route between Ōarai and Tomakomai.

2000s: Mol Ferry, Higashi Nihon Ferry and arrival at Greece

In April 2002, the ferry was transferred to Mol Ferry, and then in 2006 to Higashi Nihon Nihon Ferry, when it was renamed Ferry Tsukuba.

It was acquired by ANEK in 2007 and renamed Elyros. On 27 August 2007, she arrived at Perama for retrofitting in order to comply with the requirements of the Mediterranean routes. The retrofit was completed in August 2008. On 26 September, she was inaugurated at 5:30 in Piraeus [6] and on the 28th of the same month she was launched on the line between Piraeus and Chania.

2010-present: charters

During the Libyan conflict in 2014, the Libyan Parliament was housed on the Elyros, which was sailing off the coast of Tombok in eastern Libya for the security of parliamentarians. [7] The vessel was chartered from 2 September 2014 until 25 of the same month.

The ship has been chartered three times to Algerie Ferries in the summers of 2016, 2017 and 2018, linking Algiers to Alicante and Marseilles. [8] The first charter (2016) took place from 26 June 2016 until 22 September of the same year. The second (2017) began in June 2017 until September of the same year. The third began in June 2018 and was completed in September of the same year [9] and returned to the Chania-Piraeus line on the 13th of the month. [10]

Hellenic Seaways is 100% controlled by the Attica Group following the acquisition of minority interest of 1.17% in July 2019. It also has a partnership in Africa Morocco Link which operates mainly in the Strait of Gibraltar. In December 2023 it absorbed 100% of ANEK Lines, rendering the operator number two in the number of passengers commuted in Europe.

Hellenic Seaways is a Greece-based ferry company founded in 1984. Hellenic Seaways is a subsidiary of Attica Group along with Blue Star Ferries and Superfast Ferries.

Blue Star Maritime S.A., operating under the brand name Blue Star Ferries, is a Greece-based company founded in 1993 which provides ferry services between the Greek mainland and the Aegean Islands.

MV <i>Connemara</i>

MV Connemara is a RORO passenger and freight ferry currently sailing across the Cook Strait in New Zealand on StraitNZ's Bluebridge service, after being purchased from Stena RoRo. From 2007 to 2010, she was operated by Balearia as Borja, then between 2010 and 2011 as Baltic Amber for AVE Lines and then DFDS Seaways, before subsequently spending four years on charter to LD Lines. She spent the majority of autumn 2014 and 2015 on charter to Inter Shipping sailing from Algeciras, Spain, when she was then chartered by ANEK Lines, being replaced by Nova Star Cruises's Nova Star. The ship was renamed Asterion which comes from Greek Mythology of Asterion, the King of Crete.

MS <i>Kydon Palace</i>

MS Kydon Palace is a Greek Ro-Pax high speed ferry, built in 2001 at the Sestri Ponente shipyards by Fincantieri as Festos Palace for Minoan Lines' overnight services between Piraeus and Crete. Initially she ran to Heraklion. In 2020 she was transferred to the Piraeus–Chania route and renamed Kydon Palace She is a sister ship of Knossos Palace. She can reach speeds up to 30 knots. The ship's facilities include restaurants, bars and cabins.

The Agia Sophia Stadium, also known as OPAP Arena for sponsorship reasons and as AEK Arena for UEFA competitions, is the home stadium of AEK Athens. With an all-seater capacity of 32,500 it is the second largest football stadium overall in Greece. It is located in Nea Filadelfeia, a northwestern suburb of Athens, Greece. The new arena was built on the site of the former Nikos Goumas Stadium. The construction of the arena was completed in October 2022. Agia Sophia Stadium is the newest stadium built in Greece.

MS <i>Norman Atlantic</i> Italian passenger ferry; caught fire in 2014

MS Norman Atlantic was a roll-on/roll-off passenger (ROPAX) ferry owned by the Italian ferry company Visemar di Navigazione. The ferry was chartered by ANEK Lines from December 2014. On 28 December 2014, she caught fire in the Strait of Otranto, in the Adriatic Sea.

<i>El. Venizelos</i> (ship) Greek ferry

The MS El. Venizelos is a Greek ferry, and 2nd oldest ship in the ANEK Lines fleet. It is a motor Ro-Ro/Passenger ferryboat, built in 1984 at Stocznia im. Komuny Paryskiej, Gdynia, Poland as Stena Polonica and completed in 1992 in Perama, Piraeus, Greece as El Venizelos. It is one of 4 sister ships, Stena Vision and Stena Spirit, both owned by Stena Lines, and the unfinished Lelakis' Regent Sky. It can hold a total of 2300 passenger and 850 cars and has 1606 beds for passengers. It has four Zgoda-Sulzer 16ZV 40/48 diesel engines, with combined power of 34,130 kW and can reach a speed of 22 knots.It also has WiFi Internet, two restaurants. two bars, an amusement arcade, a casino, a church, a duty-free shop, a playground, a hospital, escalators, elevators, air-conditioning and a swimming pool and its cabins can be either "lux", 2-bed, 4-bed or for the Disabled. It is named after Eleftherios Venizelos, a Greek politician who served as Prime Minister of Greece and has Cretan origins. On 30 March El Venizelos laid-up since three days in Piraeus Anchorage had cases with the COVID-19. On 2 April at nine pm El Venizelos moored at the Piraeus Port. From 25 April 2020 to 13 April 2023 she was laid up at Perama.

<i>Blue Star 1</i> Greek ferry

Blue Star 1 is a Greek ferry, which is owned by Blue Star Ferries. She is a motor Ro-Ro/Passenger ferryboat, built in 2000 by Van der Giessen de Noord shipward in Krimpen aan den IJssel, Netherlands. She is a sistership to Blue Star 2. She holds a total of 1600 passengers and 640 vehicles and has 430 beds in 161 cabins for passengers. She has four MAN B&W 8L58 / 64 diesel engines, with combined power of 44,480 kW and reaches speeds of up to 27 knots.

Savvas Xiros is a Greek terrorist and member of Revolutionary Organization 17 (N17). He was arrested on June 29, 2002, at the Piraeus port after a bomb exploded in his hands. He was put on trial in 2003. He was convicted of life imprisonment for murders, robberies, explosions and participation in N17.

Sea Speed Ferries was a Greek ferry company operating from the Greek mainland to Cyclades in the Aegean Sea. The company was founded in 2018 and operated a single conventional Ro-Pax ferry. The company ceased operations in 2022, following a controversy with a Greek subsidised line.

MS <i>Mytilene</i>

The MS Mytilene was a ferry ship of Greece, which used to be part of NEL Lines' fleet. She was built in 1973 in Japan as the Vega and put into service for NEL in 1992. She is a sister ship of Virgo, which also came to Greece as the GA Ferries' Rodanthi. She could accommodate up to 1300 passengers and 225 vehicles. The shipis powered by two Pielstick 16PC2-5V diesel engines with a maximum combined power of 19,200 bhp and reached service speeds up to 21 knots and maximum speed up to 23.8. She had economy class seating, a salon and bar for A and economy class passengers, a self service restaurant, dining room, jewellery safekeeping room, telephone and gift shop. She took her name from Mytilene, the largest city and capital of Lesvos.

HSC <i>Aspasia T</i> Passenger ferry

The HSC Aspasia T, is an inactive passenger ferry speedboat, which was part of the fleet of the Lesvos Shipping Company (NEL) - NEL Lines. She was built in 2000 at Alsthom Leroux Naval S.A. of France as the Aeolos Express. She could hold a total of up to 1000 passengers and 210 vehicles and was powered by four Pielstick diesel engines with a combined 32,400 kilowatts (43,400 hp) and reached speeds of up to 36 knots. She had Pullman seats for people of economy and 1st class passengers, economy and 1st class bar, 127 satellite TVs, headsets for music in the seats, elevator for passengers, escalator staircase, reception, Jewellery safekeeping room, telephone and toilets for disabled, and was fully-airconditioned. She took her name from Aeolus, the mythical treasurer of the winds according to Greek Mythology, but also Costas Kenteris, a modern Greek runner.

The HSC Aeolos Kenteris, is an inactive passenger highspeed craft which was part of the fleet of the Lesvos Shipping Company (NEL) - NEL Lines. She was built in 2000 at Alsthom Leroux Naval S.A. of France. She could hold a total of 1742 passengers and 442 private vehicles. .She was powered by a CODAG propulsion plant, with a power of 66.2MW, two MTU GE LM2500 diesel engines with gas turbines, each with power 25,000 kW at 3,600 rpm, Renk BS 210 gearboxes and Kamewa 200 511 waterjets, which allowed her to reach speeds of up to 40 knots. Previously, she also had two Pielstick 20PA6B STC diesel engines with a power of 8,100 kW at 1,050 rpm. each. She had seats for economy and 1st class passengers, bar for economy and 1st class passengers, 127 satellite TVs, headphones with music in the seats, elevator for passengers, escalator, reception, Jewellery safekeeping room, telephone and toilets. She took its name from Aeolus, the mythical treasurer of the winds according to Greek Mythology, but also Costas Kenteris, a modern Greek runner.
