Emerald Cruises is a cruise line headquartered in Zug, Switzerland, [1] formerly known as the river cruise line Emerald Waterways and ocean yacht service Emerald Yacht Cruises, [2] and part of the Scenic Group.

History

Emerald Waterways was founded in 2013 by Glen Moroney, [3] as a division of Scenic. [4] It offered its first cruises on the rivers of Europe in 2014 on the 180-passenger Emerald Sky. [5]

In 2018, the company announced its first non-European ship, the 84-passenger Emerald Harmony, to provide cruises between Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam and Siem Reap, Cambodia. [6] It also announced its expansion into yacht cruising, chartering the MV Adriatic Princess to offer cruises on Croatia's Dalmatian coast on the Adriatic Sea. [7]

In February 2020, Emerald Cruises became the umbrella brand for Emerald Waterways and Emerald Yacht Cruises, a new ocean cruise line. In addition, it announced an upcoming launch of Emerald Azzurra, the first ship launched by Emerald Yacht Cruises, providing ocean cruises to the Adriatic, Mediterranean and Red Sea. [8]

Emerald Cruises operates eight river ships, [9] one yacht, [10] two chartered river ships, [11] and two chartered yachts. Emerald Azzura delivered in February 2022 with starts in Jordan.

RMS <i>Transvaal Castle</i>

RMS Transvaal Castle was a British ocean liner built by John Brown & Company at Clydebank for the Union-Castle Line for their mail service between Southampton and Durban. In 1966 she was sold to the South Africa-based Safmarine and renamed S.A. Vaal for further service on the same route. Following cessation of the service between the UK and South Africa in 1977 the ship was sold to Carnival Cruise Line and rebuilt in Japan as the cruise ship SS Festivale, re-entering service in 1978. In 1996 she was chartered to Dolphin Cruise Line and renamed IslandBreeze. In 1998 the ship was sold to Premier Cruise Line, which renamed her The Big Red Boat III. Following the bankruptcy of Premier Cruise Line in 2000, The Big Red Boat III was laid up until 2003 when she was sold to scrappers in Alang, India. She was renamed The Big Red Boat for her final voyage to the scrapyard.

Cruise West was an independent, destination focused small-ship cruise operator based in Seattle, Washington. The line was the largest operator of U.S. flagged cruise vessels with nine currently operating.
