Nigeria has 774 local government areas (LGAs), each administered by a local government council consisting of a chairman, who is the chief executive, and other elected members, who are referred to as councillors. Each LGA is further subdivided into a minimum of ten and a maximum of twenty wards. A ward is administered by a councillor, who reports directly to the LGA chairman. The councillors fall under the legislative arm of the Local Government, the third tier of government in Nigeria, below the state governments and the federal government.
Ahoada is a city in Orashi Region of Rivers State, Nigeria, located northwest of Port Harcourt. In Ahoada, the Ekpeye language is majorly spoken, though there are other languages in Ahoada like: Engenni, Ogba, Ukwu Ani and Ikwerre.

The Ikwerre is an ethnic group in Rivers State, Nigeria. The Ikwerre ethnic group in Rivers State, spans over four Local Government Areas; Port Harcourt, Obio Akpor, Ikwerre, and Emohua.. Pockets of the Ikwerre are found in Ohaji-Egbema LGA of Imo State.
The Ogba is an igboid group in Rivers state. The Ogba people speak Ogba, a dialect of Igbo language. The Ogbas reside in a local government called Ogba-Egbema-Ndoni in Rivers state Nigeria. The Ogba language has three dialects namely; Usomini, Igburu, Egi dialect. The Ogba kingdom is made up of three clans which includes; Egi, Igburu, Usomini clans, and its largest urban town is Omoku. Ogba people speak two dialects of the Ogba languages, the Egi and Igburu. Eligbo and Ukporomini are two Ogba communities in Ahaoda East Local Government Area, while Itu II in Emohua LGA also speaks Ogba language.
Obio-Akpor is a Local Government Area in the metropolis of Port Harcourt in Rivers State, Nigeria. It is one of the major centres of economic activities in Nigeria, and one of the major cities of the Niger Delta region, with industries and companies like Pabod Breweries, Coca-Cola Company, Indomie Company and Port Harcourt Electricity Distribution Company.
Ogba–Egbema–Ndoni is a Local Government Area of Rivers State, in South-South Nigeria under Rivers West Senatorial District, with its headquarters at Omoku. With about 258,700 People according to 2006 Census. It is bounded by Imo, Delta, Bayelsa, and Anambra States and also by Ahoada West, Ahoada East and Emohua Local Government Areas of Rivers State. They are part of the Igboid speaking Areas of Rivers State with three Tribes starting with Ogba as the dominant tribe with 12 legislative wards, the Egbema and Ndoni people who are also found in Ogbaru L.G.A and Ukwuani L.G.A both with 2&3 legislative wards respectively. It is majorly upland and home to the highest upstream Oil and Gas exploration/exploitation activity in the State since early 1960's with about 12 mining/producing fields operated by AGIP, Total Energies and Shell/NPDC with many other reserve/untapped fields. It is part of the Ogba / Egbema / Ndoni / Ahoada West constituency of the Nigerian House of Representatives. Hon. Vincent Job is the Executive Chairman of ONELGA.
Emohua is an oil rich Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. Its headquarters are in the town of Emohua. Emohua LGA is made up of so many towns and villages which includes; Omudioga, Egbeda, Ubimini, Elele-Alimini, Rumuji, Emohua, Ibaa, Obelle, Itu, Ndele, Odegu, and so many others.
Ikwerre is a Local Government Area in Rivers State, Nigeria. Its headquarters is in the town of Isiokpo 'known as the ancient Kingdom of Ikwerre land'. It is the first Iwuhuohna local government and later Emohua, Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt LGAs were created, also the Ikwerre tribe occupies the upland region of Rivers State. It shares boundaries with Imo State to the north, Emohua to the west, Etche to the east, and Obio-Akpor to the south.

Chukwuemeka Woke is a Nigerian engineer and politician of the People's Democratic Party. He has served as chairman of Emohua local government area of Rivers State. In June 2015, former Governor Ezenwo Wike appointed him to serve as the Chief of Staff. of Rivers State Government. He was nominated as a commissioner designate in June 2023 subsequently he was sworn in as commissioner for special projects under the administration of Siminalayi Fubara. He resigned on 9 May 2024 and was appointed as the Managing Director/CEO of the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority. On the 22 May, 2024 he was re-assigned as Director General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency, assuming office on 10 June, 2024.
Elections in Rivers State are supervised and conducted by two major electoral bodies, Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). There are 23 local government areas, 319 electoral wards and 4442 polling units in the state. Elections for Governor and the House of Assembly are held every four years, along with federal elections for President and the National Assembly.
Michael Eleonu Anwuri was the Commissioner of Power in the Executive Council of Rivers State. He was appointed to the position in 2015 by Governor Ezenwo Nyesom Wike. He died on 3 June 2020.
Samuel Ogeh, also known as Sam Ogeh is a state-level politician in Nigeria. He is a member of the Rivers State People's Democratic Party. He was elected as Member of the House of Assembly for the constituency of Emohua in the 2016 rerun election. He defeated APC candidate Chidi Lloyd by a majority of 8,208 votes.
Andrew Igbonule Uchendu is a Nigerian politician. He is currently a member of the Senate of Nigeria representing the Rivers East senatorial district. He had always been a member of the People's Democratic Party until 2014 when he switched allegiance to the All Progressives Congress party. Between 2003 and 2015, he represented the Ikwerre–Emohua constituency in the Federal House of Representatives.

The 2023 Nigerian presidential election in Rivers State will be held on 25 February 2023 as part of the nationwide 2023 Nigerian presidential election to elect the president and vice president of Nigeria. Other federal elections, including elections to the House of Representatives and the Senate, will also be held on the same date while state elections will be held two weeks afterward on 11 March.
