Emre Şimşek (born June 14, 1987) is an Olympian Turkish skier competing in the alpine disciplines. The 1.78 m (5 ft 10 in) tall athlete is coached by his father İsmail Şimşek. [1]

Early life

Emre Şimşek was born in Bayburt, Turkey on June 14, 1987. [1] After finishing the high school at his hometown in 2005, he studied physical education and sports in the Kazım Karabekir Faculty of Education at Atatürk University in Erzurum. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in 2009. Şimşek obtained a Master's degree in sports medicine in 2012. Currently, he is a lecturer at Sports College of Erciyes University in Kayseri. [2]

Career

Şimşek has nine Turkish champion titles in different age categories of slalom and giant slalom disciplines, and twice in grass skiing. He is holder of more than 50 medals. In the national team, Şimşek represented his country 122 times at international competitions. His major international participations include FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in 2007 Åre, Sweden and 2011 Garmisch, Germany, [1] Winter Universiades in 2007 Turin, Italy, 2009 Harbin, China and 2011 Erzurum, Turkey as well as diverse FIS competitions between 2005 and 2013. [2]

His best FIS point is 17.74, and best FIS average time is 26.61. [2]

As one of the only six-athlete team Turkey, [3] Şimşek takes part at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi competing in the slalom and giant slalom events. [1] [2] [4]

He is also a certified coach for alpine skiing. [2]

LW5/7 is a standing para-alpine and para-Nordic skiing classification for skiers with upper extremity issues in both limbs that may include double amputation of both arms and hands or dysmelia of the upper limbs. The class has three subclasses defined by the location of the disability on the upper extremities. International classification is done by IPC Alpine Skiing and IPC Nordic Skiing. On the national level, classification is handled by national sports federation such as Cross-Country Canada.

Ester Ledecká is a Czech snowboarder and alpine skier. At the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, Ledecká won gold medals in the super-G in alpine skiing and in the parallel giant slalom in snowboarding, becoming the first person to not only compete in the Winter Olympics using two different types of equipment but to go further and win two gold medals and do so at the same Winter Olympics. She was the second woman to win an Olympic gold in two separate disciplines but the first to do so at the same Winter Olympics. She was the first Czech to win the parallel giant slalom in snowboarding at the FIS Snowboard World Cup.

David Chodounsky is a former World Cup alpine ski racer from the United States, and specialized in the technical disciplines of slalom and giant slalom. Chodounsky competed in two Winter Olympics ; prior to the U.S. Ski Team, he raced for Dartmouth College in New Hampshire.

Christian Geiger is an Australian Alpine skier, Paralympic alpine ski coach and sighted guide for visually impaired skiers. He was Jessica Gallagher's guide skier at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, winning a bronze medal. He represented Australia at the 2008 World Junior Alpine Skiing Championships and the 2009 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, but his career was cut short when he was severely injured in a traffic collision in 2009. He became Jessica Gallagher's sighted guide in 2013, and guided her to silver medals in women's slalom and giant slalom at the 2013 IPC Alpine Skiing World Cup in Thredbo. Geiger was Melissa Perrine's guide and coach at the 2018 Winter Paralympics where she won two bronze medals.

Henrik Von Appen is an alpine skier from Chile. He competed for Chile at the 2014 Winter Olympics and 2018 Winter Olympics in all five alpine skiing events. In 2018, Henrik was Chile's flagbearer at the opening ceremony.

Belgium sent a delegation to compete at the 2014 Winter Paralympics in Sochi, Russia, held between 7–16 March 2014. This was Belgium's eighth time participating in the Winter Paralympic Games. The Belgian delegation consisted of two athletes, Jasper Balcaen in alpine skiing, and Denis Colle, a snowboarder, which was considered a discipline of alpine skiing for these Paralympics. Their best performance in any event was 6th by Colle in the snowboard cross.

Evgeniy Timofeev is an alpine skier from Kyrgyzstan. He competed for Kyrgyzstan at the 2014 Winter Olympics in the slalom and giant slalom. He was the only Kyrgyzstani athlete in Sochi.

Malta sent a delegation to compete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang, South Korea, from 9 to 25 February 2018, with one competitor, alpine skier Élise Pellegrin. Hilmi Esat Bayındırlı, also known as Erik Bayindirli, is a Turkish-American Paralympic alpine skier, who competes in the LW11 disability class of mostly men's giant slalom, sitting event. He represented United States at the 2006 Winter Paralympics and Turkey at the 2014 Winter Paralympics. A trained jeweller, he was paralyzed below the chest following a car accident in his youth.
