En resa i Finland (A journey in Finland) is a book by Zacharias Topelius published in twelve volumes between 1872 and 1874, which describes Finland, its people and places. The work is illustrated with 36 steel engravings. [1]
The motifs are primarily from the coastal regions of southern Finland as well as Tavastia, Karelia and Savonia. The intention was to publish additional booklets about the more northern parts of the country, but due to a low number of subscribers and unprofitability, no more series were published. [1]
The Finnish translation by Julius Krohn was published at the same time under the title Matkustus Suomesa. The translations into German were published in 1874 and Russian in 1875. [1] [2]
The booklets were republished by the Society of Swedish Literature in Finland in 2013. Topelius's similar historical-geographical works include Finland framstäldt i teckningar (Finland presented in drawings, 1845–1852) and Boken om vårt land (The book about our country, 1875). [1]

Uusimaa is a historical province in the south of Finland. It borders Finland Proper, Tavastia, Savonia, and Karelia. The English translation would be "new land". From the Middle Ages to 1809, most of the present-day Finland was a part of Sweden. Uusimaa (Nyland) was thus also included among the historical Swedish provinces.
The historical provinces are former administrative or cultural areas of Finland, with origins from the slottslän of the Middle Ages. The historical provinces ceased to be administrative entities in 1634 when they were superseded by the counties, a reform which remained in force in Finland until 1997. The historical provinces remain as a tradition, but have no administrative function today.

The toponyms of Finland result mainly from the legacy left by three linguistic heritages: the Finnish language, the Swedish language and Sami languages. Finland’s place names range from those of unknown or unrecognizable origins to more clearly derivable onomastics. There are both national and international recommendations on how to use the bilingual country's place names in texts written in different languages. In Finland, the Research Institute for the Languages of Finland and the National Land Survey of Finland are jointly responsible for the standardization of place names.
