Lt. Gen. Epaphras Denga Ndaitwah (born 13 December 1952) is a Namibian diplomat and former military officer. He served as the chief of the Namibia Defence Force (NDF) from 24 January 2011 to 31 December 2013. Being the husband of the President-elect of Namibia [1] (Vice-president Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah),Lt. Gen. Ndaitwah is expected to the very first Namibian First Gentleman when the President Elect takes up her role on 21 March 2025.
Born in Ohangwena Region,Ndaitwah joined SWAPO's military wing,the People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN),in 1974 and participated in Namibia's struggle for independence in various positions. He attended military training in Russia,Yugoslavia,India,Nigeria,Zambia and Tanzania.
At Namibia's independence in 1990,Ndaitwah became the first military assistant to the Chief of the Defence Force,Dimo Hamaambo. He held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel at that time. He became Deputy Commander of the Army in 1997. Until 2006,Ndaitwah served as chargéd’affaires of Namibia to the Democratic Republic of Congo. He was promoted to Major General in 2008 and appointed as Chief of Operations,Plans and Training to Lieutenant General,in 2011 at the occasion of his appointment as Chief of the Namibian Defence Force,succeeding Lieutenant General Martin Shalli. [2] He served in that position until the end of 2013 when Lieutenant General John Sinvula Mutwa was appointed new Chief of the NDF. [3]
In 2007,Ndaitwah graduated with a master's degree in Strategic Studies from University of Ibadan,Nigeria. In 2011,he was a student of public management at the Polytechnic of Namibia. [2]
Ndaitwah worked at the International University of Management for five years as a Senior Lecturer and the Head of Strategic Management and Business Administration faculty before becoming a member of the Governing council for four years which amounted to a total of 9 years. [4] Ndaitwah resigned from the IUM on 16 May 2024. [5]
Ndaitwah authored two books titled 'A life and Views of a Soldier:Author's Perspective' and 'Strategic Leadership and Management the Direction Pointers'. [6] [7] Over his career he also he wrote over forty articles to Namibian newspapers and authored one journal article published in the African Armed Forces.

It was created when the country,then known as South West Africa,gained independence from apartheid South Africa in 1990. Chapter 15 of the Constitution of Namibia establishes the NDF and defines its role and purpose as," ... to defend the territory and national interests of Namibia".
The South West Africa People's Organisation,officially known as the SWAPO Party of Namibia,is a political party and former independence movement in Namibia. Founded in 1960,it has been the governing party in Namibia since the country achieved independence in 1990. The party continues to be dominated in number and influence by the Ovambo ethnic group.
Dumeni Solomon "Jesus" Hawala is a former Namibian lieutenant general. Hawala was the deputy commander of the People's Liberation Army of Namibia before independence. He earned the nickname "Butcher of Lubango" for allegedly running detainee camps of SWAPO opponents in the southern Angolan city of Lubango during the Namibian War of Independence. Upon independence in 1990,Hawala was appointed as Army Commander in the Namibian Defence Force (NDF). In 2000 he replaced Dimo Hamaambo as head of the NDF. He retired in October 2006 and was replaced by Martin Shalli.
The People's Liberation Army of Namibia (PLAN) was the military wing of the South West Africa People's Organisation (SWAPO). It fought against the South African Defence Force (SADF) and South West African Territorial Force (SWATF) during the South African Border War. Throughout its history,PLAN had both irregular insurgent and semi-conventional units,as well as an extensive recruitment network in rural South West Africa (Namibia). During the war most of its domestic activities consisted of mine warfare and acts of sabotage. PLAN initially lacked any standing units,and the bulk of operations were carried out by political exiles who spent cyclical periods residing in refugee camps in neighbouring states before launching raids inside South West Africa itself. By the end of the war,PLAN had 32,000 militants under arms,including three battalions of semi-conventional troops equipped with heavy weapons.
Heroes' Acre is an official war memorial of the Republic of Namibia. Built into the uninhabited hills 10 kilometres (6 mi) south of the city centre of Windhoek,Heroes' Acre opened on 26 August 2002. It was created to "foster a spirit of patriotism and nationalism,and to pass [this] to the future generations of Namibia".
Ndemupelila Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah,nicknamed NNN,is a Namibian politician who became president-elect of Namibia after winning the presidential election on 3 December 2024. She is scheduled to be Namibia's fifth president and the first woman to hold this position. She is serving as the third vice-president of Namibia since February 2024. She was also SWAPO's first female presidential candidate for the 2024 Namibian general election. In 2017,Nandi-Ndaitwah was elected vice-president of SWAPO,the first woman to serve in that position.
Major General Petrus "Peter" Kagadhinwa Nambundunga was a Namibian military commander. Nambundunga was appointed the commander of the army in 2005,replacing Martin Shalli when he was promoted to chief of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF).

In 2005,he was appointed as Namibia's High Commissioner to Zambia by President Sam Nujoma,but he was recalled in October 2006 by Nujoma's successor,Hifikepunye Pohamba,and appointed as Chief of the Namibia Defence Force (NDF). He replaced controversial NDF commander Solomon Huwala,and he was replaced as High Commissioner to Zambia by regional councillor Solomon Witbooi.

Lieutenant General John Sinvula Mutwa was a Namibian military officer whose last appointment was as chief of the Namibian Defence Force (NDF). He was appointed the commander of the Namibian Army in 2011,and NDF Chief on 31 December 2013,a position from which he retired on 31 March 2020.

Peter Hafeni Vilho is a Namibian politician and retired rear admiral who is a member of the Parliament of Namibia,a former Minister of Defence,and a former commander of the Namibian Navy. He was appointed the commander of the maritime wing of the Namibian Defence Force in 2002. In September 2017 he was appointed as executive director of the Ministry of Defence. In March 2020,Namibian president Hage Geingob appointed Vilho as the Minister of Defense and Veteran Affairs. Vilho served until his resignation in April 2021 after allegations of holding an undeclared bank account.
Martin Kambulu Pinehas is a Namibian military officer who is serving as the Chief of the Defence Force,he previously served as commander of the Namibian Air Force. He was appointed the commander of the Air Wing of the Namibian Defence Force in 2000. He has over 3700 flight hours of experience,including 700 as an instructor.
